Chapter 1 Introduction
Introduction
Thank you for purchasing Manga Studio. Please read this manual completely before using the software.
Manga Studio is the first software program designed to handle the entire process of manga and comic design and
creation, from sketching the layout to inking and publishing.
Comic production is a highly complex process. Traditionally, creating high-quality comics and manga required
experience and good technology and a considerable investment of time. Manga Studio takes advantage of digital
technology to help artists create comics and illustrations quickly and easily - even artists new to the genre can
produce high-quality artwork. With Manga Studio, you can create stunning comics and illustrations much more
efficiently than the entire process can be done on paper.

2
Flexible Resolution Settings (Debut/EX)
3
You can freely adjust page resolution, for example at 72dpi or at 350dpi, depending on your needs. Print or web,
hardcopy or screen, you can easily create comics and illustrations for whatever medium you publish in.
4
Wide Variety of Materials
5
(1) Well-stocked Screen Tone Library (Debut/EX)
Manga Studio includes a large number of screen tones, indispensable for creating comics and manga. The
collection of practical screen tones is huge, from simple tones to stylish designs, including over 1800 in Debut and
6
nearly 3000 in EX.
15
Drawing Features
(1) Raster Layer Output Settings (Debut/EX) 16
You can set output methods such as "Tone" or "Dither" for grayscale drawings. You can also set output methods for
individual layers. 17
8
Chapter 1 Introduction
By outputting gray shades as tones, you can soften your illustrations, helping you create artwork filled with imagery
and mood.
Vector Features
(1) Control Line Width (EX)
You can automatically batch-change the width of vector lines. You can make lines thinner, thicker, or change them
to a width you specify.
Tone Features
(1) Eyedropper Tool (EX)
Use the [Eyedropper] to pick up color and tone settings from one location with a click, then paste the same tone to
another location with another click. For example, if you create tone samples for each character before creating
your story, you can pick up those tone settings and paste them throughout your drawing, quickly and easily.

Chapter 4 Layers
Layer Basics
About Layers
Manga Studio constructs complete drawings by overlapping multiple "layers," each containing different parts of the
illustration. Layers allow you to organize the contents of your work and make drawing more efficient.
A layer, simply, is a kind of transparent sheet, and in Manga Studio an artist draws on these sheets with black ink.
Since each layer is transparent, you can see the images drawn on additional layers stacked below the target layer.
Lower layers can be hidden from view by inserting a layer painted all white just above them.
37
Manga Studio 3.0 Users Guide
2
Types of Layers
Before you start drawing in the [Page] window, you should create a new layer. 3
You can control whether each layer is visible or hidden with a simple checkbox. This makes it easy to save old
layers, such as drafts, that you may not want to see all the time. There are various types of layers, each with a
different function. Selecting and using a variety of layer types allow you to easily organize and manage your work. 4
[Raster Layer]
Raster layers handle the raster, or bitmap, drawings and 5
images. Raster layers are great for sketching as well as
final penwork.
You can change the opacity of each layer with the [Layer 6
Properties] palette.
When you create a new layer and open the [New Layer]
dialog box, you can set a number of parameters. 7
[Resolution] of the layer can be set between 72 and
1200dpi, depending on the standard resolution (set
when you created the page). Layer resolution can be 8
set to 1/1, 1/2, 1/4 or 1/8 of the standard resolution.
The upper threshold value is equal to the resolution of
the page. 9
[Expression Mode] can be set to [Black (1bit)], [Black
and white (2bit)] or [Gray (8bit)].
[Output Attribute] can be set to [Sketch] or [Finish]. 10
[Subtractive Method] can be selected only when [Gray
(8bit)] is selected for [Expression Mode]. You can
choose between [Does not Subtract Colors],
[Threshold], [Dither] or [Convert to Tone]. If you have
11
selected [Threshold], enter a value between 0 and
255 or set a value using the slider.
12
[Vector Layer] (EX)
Vector layers contain data about shapes and their
relationships with each other, meaning that you can
13
manipulate a line with the [Line Lever] tool like a piece of
string, for instance, or thin-out a line easily with the
[Width Correction] tool because information about the
14
lines shape as a whole is contained in the vector layer.
17
38
Chapter 4 Layers
[Reverse] Layer
When you create a [Reverse] layer on top of a layer with an
illustration, and then draw on the new [Reverse] layer, color
on the lower layer is inverted.
Transparent areas are displayed with the previously
selected drawing color.
See "Reverse Layer" later in this chapter and Chapter 5 -
Drawing for more details.
[Layer] Folder
This is a folder in which you can save and store layers.
[Text] Layer
This is a layer that handles text.
[Text] Folder
To save [Text] layers in the [Text] folder, select the [Text] tool
from the Tool palette and check the [Store in the Text Folder]
checkbox on the [Text Tool Options] palette.
[Tone] Layer
This is a layer for working with tones. [Tone] layers are
created automatically whenever tones are added to your
drawing.
39
Manga Studio 3.0 Users Guide
2
[Panel] Layer
This is a layer used to select a specific area and to draw 3
within that area only.
A [Panel] layer is automatically created when using the
[Panel Maker] tool. 4
Multiple image layers can also be grouped as a [Panel]
Layer.
5
[Masking] Layer
6
This is a layer created for the [Panel] layer. Only a single
[Masking] layer per [Panel] layer is allowed.
A [Masking] layer limits the visible area of the [Panel]
7
layer on the page. See "Masking Layer" later in this
chapter for more details.
8
[Group] Layer 10
Use a [Group] layer to compress multiple image layers
together. Grouping layers can conserve your systems
resources and can result in Manga Studio running faster 11
when you have many layers. Grouped, or compressed,
image layers can be ungrouped later.
12
Because this is not an irreversible compression (such as
JPEG images), image quality is not affected.
13
[Selection] Layer
This is a layer for handling selections of items. 14
With items selected in the [Page] window, select
[Convert Selection to Layer] from the [Selection] menu
to automatically create a [Selection] layer containing the 15
selected items.

2
Reverse Layers
Because a [Reverse] layer inverts all colors drawn on the original layer, black areas on the original layer become 3
white and vice-versa. Transparent regions of the original are not inverted, but rather become black since the color
of the original layer is normally white.
Create a [Reverse] Layer 4

First create the image to be reversed on one layer. Select [New Layer] from the [Layer] menu. 5

Grouping Layers
3
Multiple image layers (such as [Raster], [Vector], [Tone], and [Text] layers) can be managed as one layer by

Merging Layers
Once you have completely finished working on an illustration you can merge multiple layers together to clean up 3

Drawing Color
Selecting Ink Colors (Black, White or Transparent)
Illustrations created with Manga Studio consist of a number of overlapping layers. When hiding an image created
on a layer under the target layer, or combining an image on one layer with an image on another layer, the choice of
ink color you work with is important.
1. Select a Color
When you select a drawing tool from the [Tools] palette, the Drawing Colors are
displayed at the bottom of the [Tools] palette. Select either Black, White, or
Transparent ink
Black Ink
White Ink
4. Transparent ink has no equivalent ink in the world of
traditional paper and ink comics. You can use
transparent ink to erase an area drawn with black or
white ink. When you overlap layers with regions drawn
with transparent ink, images on layers beneath the
target layer will be visible. Transparent ink cannot be
used on vector layers.

Computones (EX)
What are Computones?
Computones (Screen Tones) are plug-in tones that can be pasted into an original illustration on a Manga Studio
[Raster] layer. The Computone tone browser is a quick and efficient way to work with Computones. It provides
thumbnail previews of tones and allows you to import any combination of tones in the Computones Standard Tone
Material Set and tone materials contained in Computones Material Catalogs. The tone browser can import
Computones Standard Tone Material Set items as well as various Computones-compatible tone catalogs such as
Computones Material Catalogs. The interface and tones are specifically designed to help prevent moir effects.

follows:
1) Create a new [Tone Set] by clicking the [Menu] button and selecting [New Tone Set...].
2) Import a [Tone Set] by clicking the [Menu] button, selecting [Import Tone Set File], and saving the [Tone Set]. 5
35.[Tone Information] Window
When you select a tone from within the [Tone Set] window, various information about that tone is displayed. 6
In the [Tone Information] window, from left to right, you will find the [Tone Set Index Number], [Title], [LPI], [Density],
and [Size] of the tone. Additionally, a "---" is displayed where no information is available or the field is inapplicable.
The [Tone Set Index Number] is a number attached to every tone and displayed next to it in the [Tone Information]
window. These numbers are common among all the [Tone Sets]: The number starts with 1 at the far-left in the top
7
row, going up from the right to the left (2,3,4,5 and 6); it starts with 7 at the far-left in the second row, going up
(8,9,10,11 and 12).
The [Title] indicates some characteristic of a tone. Detailed information varies among tones, and may include
8
[Dots], [Dots Gradation], [Sand], [Hatching], [Sand Hatching], [Sand Hatching Gradation] and so on.
The [LPI] value shows how many lines of dots per inch make up a tone. For the most part, other than dot and line
screens, most tones do not have this information, so nothing is displayed. Sand tones have an LPI value, but this
9
is approximate.
[Density] is expressed as a percentage for each tone. A perfectly white tone has a 0% density, while a perfectly
black one has 100%. A density of "100-0%" or "100-0- 100%" means a given tone is a gradation. 10
[Size] is the length by width dimensions of a tone in centimeters. Normally, it is given in widths and heights such as
[23cm wide by 32cm high]. When only one value is shown, such as [11.0cm], it indicates that the tone is endless
(boundaries not produced due to repeated pasting, assuming [Repeat] is activated for the tone) along the length of 11
patterns that are linked (in a horizontal or vertical direction). When the field shows "---", the tone has no boundary
on either its width or length.

Computones Error Messages
Computones most common error messages are listed below. When error messages other than these errors are 3
displayed, refer to the appropriate chapters in this manual or your operation system manual for more information.
Insufficient memory. 4
Cause: The PC does not have enough memory to run Computones.
Solution: Shut down any other open applications to free up system memory and reserve it for Computones. If you
still do not have enough memory, then you must increase the amount of physical system memory (RAM). For 5
example, if a tone material with a resolution of 1200dpi is used, a minimum of 512MB on-board RAM is required.
The required amount or type of the memory used varies depending on OS, graphic software and use. In general,
the more RAM you have, the smoother Computones will operate. 6
Not a tone file.
Cause: You have specified a non-tone file for import. 7
Solution: Select a Computones-compatible tone file (.tdt).

Image Adjustment Filters [Adjust Levels] (EX)
3
If you have imported a paper illustration that includes finished penwork into a [Raster] layer, you can adjust the
image contrast density using the [Adjust Levels] histogram (which shows the distribution of varying levels of light
intensity). Doing so can help remove any shadows that may have been generated during the scanning process. 4
You can also adjust line width, and make other corrections to produce high quality illustrations and comics.
9
3. The Histogram
Look closely at the shape of the histogram. The left side
of the histogram shows the color density of the 10
shadows, while the right side of the histogram shows
the color density of the highlights. The center of the
histogram shows the color density of the mid-tones. If 11
the histogram does not cover the entire width from
shadows to highlights, move the triangular slider to the
center of the peak of the histogram. 12
As you move the center control point, observe the
image in the [Page] window. Moving the control point to
the right darkens the image, while moving the control
point to the left lightens the image.

Chapter 15 Undo and Redo
Canceling an Operation
The most recent action is the one shown at the bottom of the list. To cancel or undo an action, choose it from the
list and then click the [Undo] button in the top left corner of the [History] palette. To restore your artwork to a
previous point you can select one of the actions toward the top of the list in the [History] palette. Actions below the
one you selected in the list become gray, and your illustration is restored to a state before those grayed-out actions
were applied. In this fashion you can jump to any point in your illustration process. However, making further
changes will delete the grayed-out actions, so be careful.
The palette includes [Undo] and [Redo] icons. From the menu icon, you can choose [Redo] or [Undo] while viewing
the list of actions.
