Elasto Pile System

For advanced soil structure interaction design

Elasto Pile System

Elasto Pile System

Elasto Pile System (EPS) is based on a design method for ground structures. By controlling settlement using elastic elements on top of concrete or steel piles, the number of piles required can be reduced significantly. EPS utilizes the carrying capacity of the soil combined with pile supports. EPS design uses full soil-structure interaction and allows optimization of the carrying capacity safely. EPS provides the most cost-efficient solution for 5-8 storey buildings. By controlling settlement, the required number of piles can be reduced by up to 50%, depending on ground conditions and the layout of the building. EPS can also be used when designing structures on a ombination of new and existing foundations for rebuilding c projects. This is a method that will be even more common in the future with increasing rebuilding in urban areas. EPS design requires advanced 3D FEM analysis.

EPS is recommended for use when:

- There is normal excavation for a basement, 2-3 m depth - Designing new structures in combination with old foundations - The soil is slightly over-consolidated in the range of 3-10 m - The total pile length required is between 12-35 m - There are stable ground water conditions. However, the design takes minor fluctuations into account

Design
Significant knowledge about ground conditions is required for the analysis. The soil must be slightly over-consolidated and the elastic behaviour depth-wise must be known and modelled properly. The elastomeric elements will have a unique design for each project, and special testing will be performed. 3D FEM analysis is performed by our partner GeoInvent AB.

58 storey building

When the elastic elements are compressed, the total load from the building will be balanced between pile load and accumulated ground pressure. The ground structure will be designed with full soil-structure interaction, together with the bearing capacity of the piles. Excavation depth 23 m Elastic element

Bedrock or hard soil

The elastomeric quality of EPS has excellent long term durability even when submerged in water. The design lifetime of the rubber used in these types of applications is estimated to be up to at least 100 years. As chloroprene rubber is a relatively new material, ageing tests are performed according to ISO 188.
