Prognosis It is usually easy to treat acute unilateral pain caused by invasion of External pathogenic factors; however, when it is caused by mixture of a few Internal pathogenic factors, then it would be not so easy to obtain a quick therapeutic result, especially for unilateral pain caused by Damp-Phlegm and stagnation of Blood, for instance, hemiplegia due to wind stroke. In any case, the treatment should be given as easily as possible. The longer the patient waits, the poorer result will appear. During the herbal treatment, the herbs to harmonise the collaterals, promote the circulation in the channels and to relax the Tendons should often be

combined with the basic formulas. During the acupuncture treatment, following points should often be applied, such as Accumulation points, Connecting point, Gathering point, and Source point, etc, because these points are good at regulating the meridians and promoting the Qi and Blood circulation, both in the Internal organs and meridians so as to relieve the pain successfully. Pain in the entire body, which occurs in more women than in men, can be either acute or chronic, often includes widespread pain in the soft fibrous tissues in the body such as muscles, ligaments and tendons, with multiple tender points, and can include severe fatigue, frequently feeling exhausted, and disturbed sleep. When there is pain, it is often characterised by muscle twitches and burning sensations. Besides the above symptoms, there is also possible irritable bowel syndrome, chronic headache, temperomandibular joint syndrome (TMJ), PMS, chest pain, morning stiffness, memory disturbance, numbness and tingling sensations, irritable bladder, the feeling of swollen extremities, skin sensitivities, dry eyes and mouth and dizziness, etc. Changes in weather, cold or draughty environments, infections, diet, stress, depression, anxiety and over-exertion may all cause aggravation of entire body pain. It is possible that even after numerous tests something may be discovered or nothing might be found to be wrong with the body. Pain throughout the body can, according to TCM, be caused by disorders in the Internal organs and disturbance

of the channels. There are many factors that may lead to this. They are differentiated in the following way: invasion of External Wind-Cold, invasion of External Wind-Damp, invasion of External Damp-Heat, stagnation of Liver-Qi, stagnation of Qi and Blood in the channels, deficiency of Qi and Blood, deficiency of Liver-Yin and Kidney-Yin and deficiency of Kidney-Yang. It is also possible to see some patients with such pain caused by a combination of a few of the above causative aetiologies and pathologies. In such cases the treatment is complicated, because a comprehensive and integrated treatment should be considered in order to rebalance the body and relieve the pain. Entire body pain may be attributed to any of the following disorders in Western medicine: the common cold, influenza, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), rheumatica, leptospirosis, poliomyelitis and polymyalgia, etc.
