DRUGS: save lives and improve health make health services reliable and support people partaking in health services are expensive requires especial notice compared to other consumer products supply method has great potential for improvement A bit of history From 1950-1970 basic drug management concept began to evolve e.g. Norway, Sri Lanka etc 1975 the WHO defined essential drugs as: those drugs that meet the health needs of the majority of the populations Later many countries acquired great experience in Managing drug supply These great extensive lessons gave their fruits as: 1. NDP (good foundation for managing drug supply) 2. Wise drug selection (the cause of all other improvements) 3. Effective management (money saved& work improved) 4. Rational drug use 5. Systematic assessment and monitoring 6. Financial sustainability 7. Strengthening public sector 8. Improving the behavior of, care providers, patients and public 9. Reorienting the role of government 10.Regulating safety efficiency and quality

What is the concern of Managing drug supply? Finding practical ways to close the great gap between the need for essential drugs and public access to them in these practical ways drugs program managers, non-governmental organizations, donors and others can work jointly Goals for drug management improvements : There are economic and health and national development goals related goals 1. Health related Aims at: Making essential drugs available to the whole population Ensuring the safety, efficacy, and quality of medicines manufactured and distributed in the country. Increasing attendance at health facilities. Promoting rational prescribing, dispensing, and patient use of medicines. Goals for drug management improvements : 2. Economic related Aims at reducing: Drugs cost to the government and the public foreign exchange expenditure for drugs with no reducing to the supply 3. National development goals, to Increase skills of personnel in management pharmacy and medicine Encourage the evolution of industrial competence in production SELECTION: Involves: reviewing the prevalent health problems identifying treatment of choice choosing individual drugs and dosage forms and deciding which drugs will be available at each level of health care PROCUREMENT: PROCUREMENT CYCLE STEPS Reviewing drug selection Determining quantities required Reconciliation of needs with funds or budgets selecting procurement method Locating and selecting suppliers
