Background
Tropical biodiversity is the world's very valuable assets. It provides food, feeds, clothing, and shelter for a large portion of the world's population. However, the tropical genetic resources are not only underutilized, they are also in danger of being lost due to the destruction of natural habitats at their sites of origin, the high costs of conservation programs, and our lack of appreciation of the worth of these precious resources. There is a critical need for assessing the richness of tropical genetic resources for conservation and future sustainable utilization. Assessment of genetic resources as component of biodiversity, which was previously done using molecular markers has limitation, since such markers could not access the whole genome of the organisms. The rapid advance in genomics has drawn many attentions as new and more powerful tool to asses and study genetic resources, also to solve some problems that have long been obstacles to traditional breeding program. Genomics is the study of how genes and genetic information are organized within the genome, and how this organization determines their function. The application of genomics is dramatically improving capacity to explore the genetic constitution of many important species. Together with the growing number of partial and complete genomic sequences, high-throughput and massively parallel genotyping platforms are increasingly coming on stream, allowing the analysis of transcripts, proteins, and pathways and, more importantly, helping to extract useful variability from the wealth of resources stored in germplasm banks. Genomic analysis of tropical species promises to add new dimensions to growing information available about morphology, physiology, and parallel evolution in diverse lineages of organisms. Genetic resources, which provide the raw materials, should interact with both advanced biological exploration, which provides an understanding of the genetic basis of traits, and breeding programs, which realize the value by applying conventional and advanced

methods to produce new and improved varieties and breeds. Using functional genomics approach, improvement program relies on a profound understanding of the genetic basis of functional diversity that will serve to broaden organism adaptation and improve productivity by the stacking of new or existing favorable alleles.

Objectives
To create a scientific forum for information exchange

on genomics of all types of organisms in the tropics for conservation and sustainable utilization purposes. To build a network and cooperation among scientists working on genomics research in the region and those in other regions. To create a consortium for genomics of tropical organisms, especially in South East Asia. One day seminar on 20 December 2011 will serve as forum for information exchange and knowledge sharing among participants, where various aspects of recent genomics research conducted both in the region and other regions will be discussed. The following one day workshop on 21 December 2011 will be devoted to learning process on recent methodologies an protocols, also possibility of forming a consortium of tropical genome from Southeast Asia, as well as developing a collaborative, strategic plan among participants in the region.
