ChE 312 Process Synthesis & Design Portfolio Due date: Monday 9 September 2013, 5 pm

Objectives
The objectives of this portfolio are: To demonstrate the use and referencing of professional information sources; To assess critically the information sources. To understand and develop a process flow diagram

Marking
The breakdown of marks for ChE 414 students is: Task 1 2 3 4 Description Information on designated product Process flow diagram (PFD) Mass and energy balance using HYSYS simulation Report Total Marks 20 40 30 10 100

This portfolio assessment should be read in conjunction with the ChE312 - Portfolio Feedback and Marking Sheet. Note: some marking scales are nonlinear. For your designated product, Write a report on the key issues related to the production of the product. Topics should include: Task 1: Basic information (a) Description, typical specifications and commercial applications of the designated product. (b) Health, safety and environmental issues related to the designated product. (c) Known commercial manufacturing processes. (d) Key economic data on worldwide capacities, historic and current prices, market trends, new projects, or new processes. Task 2: Process flow diagram (PFD) Choose a process from known commercial manufacturing processes. For the chosen process, (a) Justify selection of the chosen process (b) Draw and explain the process flow diagram (c) Give key technical and performance data for the process

(d) List down Raw materials, catalyst and utility requirements (on basis of 1000 kg finished product) (e) Discuss Operational aspects, technological challenges, typical problems, key equipment design methodology (for example reactor design) for the given process. Task 3: Mass and energy balance using HYSYS simulation For an assumed capacity (obtained from literature survey in task 1), construct a basic flowsheet in HYSYS. (a) Solve the flowsheet using simplified models in HYSYS (e.g. using a conversion reactors and dumb separation units). (b) Clearly state basis of calculation. Specify thermodynamic basis used. Give reason for use of this choice. (c) Present final PFD and stream table. Task 4: Report Your final report should not be more than 12 pages (single spacing, for 1.5 or double spacing adjust the page length accordingly). A professional standard of writing and presentation is expected in this portfolio. Notes Please use professional information sources, such as those covered in Lecture 1. For chemical industry information, helpful sources include ICIS Chemical Business (formerly the Chemical Market Reporter), and the ProQuest and Factiva databases, all of which may be accessed via the Curtin Library. For help with using literature sources, paraphrasing and avoiding plagiarism, please see the principles and examples presented in: o http://libguides.library.curtin.edu.au/content.php?pid=141214&sid=1399496 For more information on the recommended Chicago referencing style, see: o http://lgdata.s3-website-us-east1.amazonaws.com/docs/1470/653024/Chicago_16th_style_guide_2013.pdf
