Classroom Management Plan

Donna Muschamp, Francisco Ical & Ramiro Coc EDUC 324 UB-Toledo

Rational:
In the past few years it seems that schools have really lost touch with discipline of students. With the recent school violence it seems that the students are running the show instead of the teachers and administrators. There are many factors that are involved that affect a great classroom or a horrible classroom. From the way the teachers punish misbehaved students or the way they reward them when they do something right, to how involved the parents are with their children's education. The purpose of this plan is to explain how classroom management, when used affectively by the teacher, can produce an excellent learning environment for students.

Philosophy of Discipline:
My philosophy toward discipline is one in which discipline is not an obstacle, but rather a positive reinforcement to help promote education. Its the responsibility of the teacher to provide an environment in which students can acquire a level of achievement which will reflect who they are as active members of our society. Discipline allows us as teachers to create this environment and evade obstacles that are an obstruction to the education process. To provide the best learning environment for our students its important to keep Students on task and focused which minimizes disruption. By having a thorough lesson, a teacher can keep students on task and have as little disruption as possible. Maintaining clear order in the classroom without being too authoritarian is critical to promoting the highest level of cognitive development. A teacher should institute a clear set of rules and goals which reflect the agenda of the teacher while also being fair and just, Intimidation versus inspiration. Motivation is another key aspect of discipline. This can sometimes be one of the most difficult challenges as a teacher. By making learning personal and fun to the students, motivation becomes automatic, and less of an obstacle. When students follow and respect the classroom rules, you are likely to have a learning environment in which the students are self motivated.

Motivation is connected to self-discipline. As a teacher, as a role model, its important to present yourself as a good model to your students. To teach selfdiscipline, you have to first be disciplined yourself. Creating rules and goals for your classroom is only one step. Self-discipline means that students take control of their learning. Thats why critical thinking is so important. It makes learning personal, but more importantly it makes students question their learning, and question the meaning of knowledge. By implementing critical thinking and using a student directed approach, self-discipline is practiced and reinforced. In summary, my philosophy of discipline is one in which creates an atmosphere Where students can learn with little distractions, and where rules are seen as guidelines toward a better education, and not as barriers. Parents Expectations and Responsibilities
Parents are encouraged to participate in the education of their children. Cooperation and support of the parents, it is more difficult for the school to effectively help a student reach his or her fullest potential. The major role of parents in discipline is to continually show the child that they are interested and supportive of how their child is doing in school. When the child sees that his parents/guardians are actively interested in whether or not he is doing his/her best, the student is given a real incentive for excellence. The teacher throughout the school year will inform parents about their childs progress. If there is a severe or recurring behavior problem, parents must be asked to participate in the development of a behavior plan. By working together, parents and staff can help the student learn behaviors that will increase his/her chances of success. LETTER TO PARENTS REGARDING DISCIPLINE POLICIES School/class rules, rewards and consequences will be sent home with the children at the beginning of the school year. An acknowledgment form is to be signed and returned to the classroom teacher. If the acknowledgement form is not returned, the teacher will send a second copy. Any parents, who have not returned a signed form by September 15, will be sent the form

via the mail. The classroom teacher is to keep the signed acknowledgment form in the students individual folder.

Teacher Expectations and Responsibilities

TEACHER ROLE IN DISCIPLINE The classroom teacher is the center of an effective school management plan. The teacher will continually emphasize to students and parents the importance of doing their best and following the school expectations as well as classroom procedures. The teacher will put more energy into reinforcing successful procedures and helping students make good choices rather than trying to control behavior. When there is a behavior problem (other than a severe behavior), the teacher will re-teach classroom expectations and how to make appropriate choices.
The Staffs responsibility is to work as a TEAM in organizing, planning, and providing a stimulating and non-threatening environment where students may engage in meaningful learning experiences. The ultimate goal is to provide an environment conducive to learning where the child achieves these goals.

In order to do this; discipline is necessary as it creates conditions favorable to efficient learning. To achieve good discipline of students, all members of the school staff must be concerned with the discipline of each students. Establish and maintain an orderly and supportive classroom environment. Maintain physical environment conducive to meaningful learning. Use a variety of instructional designs and method (strategies) that will cater for the need and learning styles of the students. Evaluate students progress fairly and impartially, using both traditional and authentic assessment. (rubric, checklist, etc) Promote good class discipline and ensure procedures are followed. Develop a clear set of classroom rules and procedures, and make certain students understand and follow them. Consequences,
I will use a checklist of behaviors (Mr.Viarez checklist) also a large chart with the checklist will be place on the wall; each time a disruption occurs they will get a check next to that behavior problem. These disciplinary actions will take place and teacher will place a (yellow sticker) on the chart checklist for the first two warnings: After three checks (green sticker) receive silent lunch; loss of recess- after four (blue sticker); after five checks (red sticker) teacher and student will create a letter to go home to parents. If the behavior continues the teacher will set up a parent conference. Stickers will be place next to their name

The students will also receive a behavior journal. When a problem occurs, the student will sit at the cool down desk by the teachers desk and write a paragraph why they acted in such a manner and think of an appropriate disciplinary action that is fair. The teacher will review it and then discuss with the student appropriate measures. Consequence chart will be placed on the wall. Disciplinary Actions: Stickers and meaning:

First Warning (speaking to the child)

Second Warning (lose a privilege, line leader, or teacher assistant)
