Caitlyn Mendonca Sociology Culture Questions ALL Definitions and Answers should be in your own words.

As you see it in Society, copying and pasting is a zero!!! You may work in a group however all each individuals name must be on the answer sheet and each individual must submit a copy on their ASPEN account. There are 8 Questions all of the questions must be in complete sentences.

1. Do you think you can learn more about a people by studying their material or their nonmaterial culture? Why? I think you can learn more about people by studying their nonmaterial culture because their material culture isnt as constant.

2. Examine virtual culture, define it and discuss whether how this culture has impacted you? Virtual culture is the affect that technology and having everything at our fingertips has made on society. This culture has impacted me because as I do this assignment Im also taking breaks to scroll through Tumblr.

3. What are the primary means by which society attempts to exert social control over it members? The primary means society attempts to exert control over its members with are rules and laws. 4. Define High Culture and Pop Culture and analyze whether high culture is superior to pop culture? High culture is set of cultural products usually art that is held in high esteem. Pop culture is the cultural activities or products based on the taste of the masses. Pop culture is superior because its something connects a larger group of people than high culture does. 5. Do you think that teenagers constitute a distinct American subculture or counter culture? Why? I think teenagers are a distinct American subculture because we do have varied beliefs and goals than people older than us but are not really that different from the social norm. 6. I want you to think about your-self as a parent, say 20 years from now. What are the three most important values you can teach your child/children Compare and Contrast to the classs choices. Explain your three values.

The three most important values I could teach my child are honesty, self-respect, and helping others. A person should value honesty because if you are always honest people will be more likely to be honest to you in return. Self-respect should be valued because if you cant respect yourself you cant respect others. Helping others should be valued because if you help others theyll help you and that would make people happy. My class had the same values except for self-respect instead they had equality. Equality is similar respect on a large scale because you need to respect the people to treat them equally. So my personal values ended up being very similar to the class. 7. Examine the following list of examples for cultural change. Explain each example and give an example (real world situation) of how each one plays a role in changing a culture. - Diffusion is the spread of cultural traits from one society to another. A real world example is the spread of jazz music from America to other countries like France making a connection between our cultures. - Acculturation is the process in which one group adopts the beliefs and behaviors of another group. An example of this is when immigrants in the 1900s came to America they changed their last names to sound more American and now there are many common last names. - Environment is the environment developed by people in comparison to the natural environment. An example is cities they are faster paced than rural areas and cause subcultures to develop. - Population Shift is the change in numbers of different groups of people making up a population. For example there is a shift in high schools population when the seniors graduate and go to college. - War is a large scale conflict between cultural groups. War can cause conflict with its own people in one of the countries involved in a war. For example there was protest In America when the government decided to go to war with Vietnam and it caused a divide in society. 8. According to Sociologists, Self-fulfillment, Narcissism and Hedonism have appeared in America. Define what each means and discuss whether you agree or disagree? Explain your answer and give examples. Self-fulfillment is fulfilling ones desires or ambitions through their own effort. Narcissism is excessive self-love or vanity. Hedonism is to value pleasure or happiness over everything else. Self-fulfillment is in America because successful self-made people are shown on the news and are to be looked up to. Narcissism is also present in American society because there are ads everywhere with products to make you look younger, prettier, thinner etc. Hedonism is also in America because everything is made to be faster, easier, and more comfortable for people.
