Covington Church to Host
Salad Luncheon & Country Store
We can all recall the days when we shopped for homemade good-

apron?
Come to Covington United Church of Christ on Friday, Oct. 18,

of the church are hard at work to provide a wide variety of special
homemade items.
Also, join the Womens Fellowship that same day as they will be
hosting their last salad luncheon for the year from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.
Try their special hot chicken salad and a large assortment of home-
made salads, desserts, finger sandwiches, and a drink for a suggested
donation of $6 for adults and $3 for children.
Please use the basement entrance in the alley on the north side of

Valley Echoes
by Gary Godfrey
COVINGTON You may have seen Suzann Castore at this years
Ft. Rowdy celebration? She was the one wearing the blue tights
and red cape, passing out smileys.
The little firecracker is known as the A.O.K. (acts of kindness)
lady. She started the Kindness Exchange project in 2005.
Castore has waged war against mental illness; anorexia, bulimia,
bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, attention-deficit
disorder, dissociative disorder, and child abuse.
The 67 year old from New Jersey has been hospitalized 39 times
from the above health issues. But, that doesnt stop her from smil-
ing and hugging everyone she meets, to reach her passionate goal
of making Columbus, Ohio (where she now resides) a stepping-
stone for kindness.
Its very hard for people to understand mental illness. But there
is hope. People get well, she explained in a telephone interview.
The acts of kindness Im giving others healed me. Im trying to
give back as much as possible.
From 1986 to 2002, Suzanns hospitalizations and relapses de-
flated her life many times. She tried to commit suicide five times.
I was in and out of hospitals, treated by a number of profession-
als, placed on a variety of medications and diagnosed with a num-
ber of mental disorders, Castore divulged. When she thinks back,
Susann calls herself very fortunate to have survived.
She was misdiagnosed with nearly 10 different mental health dis-
orders, before finally receiving the correct diagnoses and medica-
tion for bipolar disorder. She still remembers this experience as
a, painful road to recovery and healing.
Throughout Susanns ups and downs, one thing has never
waivered: her passion to help others. She has found healing in vol-
unteerism, and of course random acts of kindness.
Suzann has experienced a long road of recovery, turning her per-
sonal tragedies into others joy. For this, Suzann has found the
true meaning of Acts 20:35:
In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work
we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus
himself said: 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.
This weeks bottom line: I know in my heart its one person
at a time. I am in awe of the way kindness works.

Free Program on Death of Tecumseh
To be Presented at Garst Museum
On Sunday, October 20, the Garst Museum will present the first lecture
of the 2013-14 series. Frank Kuron will present Thus Fell Tecumseh at 2
p.m.
Kuron authored his first book titled Thus Fell Tecumseh in 2011. His
book chronicles the battles and hardships of forces on both sides of the con-
flict in the year-and-a-half leading up to the Battle of the Thames in October
of 1813 where the great Shawnee Chief Tecumseh was killed.
Over 160 primary accounts from diaries, newspapers, and letters of
troops involved at the Thames provide the reader with the opportunity to
solve the 200-year-old historical mystery of how and by whose hand Tecum-
seh was slain. The presentation will review many of these eyewitness testi-
monies of Tecumsehs death and highlight why this event is still unsolvable
and so controversial.
Kuron, a lifelong resident of Toledo, has been a graphic artist for 35 years
and an Early American history enthusiast even longer. He also writes War of
1812-themed history columns for the Toledo Free Press newspaper. He cur-
rently is researching material for his next book about frontier life of early
America.
Admission to the program is FREE and open to the public; however, normal admission fees apply to
tour the museum. Support for the Garst Lecture Series comes, in part, from the Harry D. Stephens Memorial
Trust, Inc.
The Garst Museum is located at 2205 N. Broadway St. in Greenville. Phone 937-548-5250 / Fax: 937-
548-7645; http://www.garstmuseum.org.

Northern Bobwhite Quail
Topic of BNC Creature Feature
Brukner Nature Center will present Northern Bobwhite Quail on Saturday, Nov. 2, from 2-3 p.m.
Bobwhite Quail populations are decreasing at an alarming rate. As a species of concern in Ohio, factors
such as habitat destruction and short life expectancies are grave influences to transitioning this grassland
bird into a threatened conservation status.
Join us as we explore the natural history of the diminishing Northern Bobwhite Quail, how it contributes
to their decline, and about some conservation initiatives to help maintain and restore their populations.
FREE with admission to BNC, located at 5995 Horseshoe Bend Rd. in Troy.

with community blood drives. Everyone who registers to donate will
receive the special-edition I Fight Cancer, I Give Blood T-shirt.
Donors are encouraged to schedule an appointment online at
www.DonorTime.com. Donors can also contact Dana Puterbaugh,
Darke Co. Account Representative, at 937-997-2199 or dputer-
baugh@givingblood.org.
The I Fight Cancer, I Give Blood T-shirt is free to everyone who

drives through Saturday, Nov. 2. Blood donors play an important role
in the treatment of cancer patients. Chemotherapy and other treatments
have a harsh impact on blood cells. Transfusions of donated blood and
blood products are vital to reducing complications and saving lives.
A blood drive is scheduled Monday, Oct. 21, at Greenville Grace
Church, 4805 St. Rt. 49, Greenville, from 3-7 p.m. The drive is open
to the community. Appointments encouraged.

Association we belong to has pur-
chased the above classifieds. Deter-
mining the value of their service or
product is advised by this publication. In
order to avoid misunderstandings,
some advertisers do not offer employ-
ment but rather supply the readers with
manuals, directories and other materi-
als designed to help their clients estab-
lish mail order selling and other
businesses at home. Under NO circum-
stance should you send any money in
advance or give the client your check-
ing, license ID, or credit card numbers.
Also beware of ads that claim to guar-
antee loans regardless of credit and
note that if a credit repair company
does business only over the phone it is
illegal to request any money before de-
livering its service. All funds are based
in US dollars. Toll free numbers may or
