Arthur C. Danto
Arthur Coleman Danto (Michigan, 1 de enero de 1924) es un crtico de arte y profesor de filosofa de los Estados Unidos.

Datos generales
Danto naci en Ann Arbor, Michigan, en 1924, y creci en Detroit. Despus de pasar dos aos en la Armada, Danto estudi arte e historia en la Wayne University (ahora Wayne State University) para luego seguir estudios de graduacin en filosofa, en la Universidad de Columbia. Desde 1949 a 1950, Danto estudi en Paris con una beca Fulbright (Maurice Merleau-Ponty), y en 1951 regres a ensear en Columbia, donde actualmente es Profesor Johnsonian Emrito de Filosofa.

Pensamiento
Parte de la celebridad alcanzada por Danto est basada en su tesis sobre una supuesta "muerte del arte" en el horizonte contemporneo de la cultura. Para fundamentar su postura acude a la meditacin hegeliana sobre la muerte del arte en el contexto de su Esttica. Es considerado el filsofo analtico ms importante en temas de esttica, aunque sus posturas son discutibles (ver Danto and his critics, por ejemplo).

Filosofa
Danto ha alcanzado notoriedad por su trabajo en Esttica Filosfica, aunque ha incursionado en otras reas como la Filosofa de la Historia, las Teoras de la Representacin, la Psicologa Filosfica, la Esttica de Hegel y los filsofos Maurice Merleau-Ponty y Arthur Schopenhauer.

Crtica de Arte
Arthur Danto es crtico de arte de "The Nation [1]", y el tambin ha publicado numerosos artculos en otros diarios. Adems, es editor en el prestigioso "Journal oh Philosophy" y editor colaborativo del "Naked Punch Review and Artforum". En crtica de arte, ha publicado algunas colecciones de ensayos, incluidos: "Encounters and Reflections: Art in the Historical Present" (Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 1990), con el cual gan el National Book Critics Circle Prize for Criticism en 1990; "Beyond the Brillo Box: The Visual Arts in Post-Historical Perspective" (Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 1992); "Playing With the Edge: The Photographic Achievement of Robert Mapplethorpe" (University of California, 1995); "The Madonna of the Future: Essays in a Pluralistic Art World" (Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 2000) and "Unnatural Wonders: Essays from the Gap Between Art and Life".

Honores
Ha sido beneficiario de muchos premios y becas, incluidos de Guggenheim Fellowships, ACLS, y Fulbright, y ha tenido cargos como Vice-Presidente y Presidente de la American Philosophical Association, al igual que Presidente de la American Society for Aesthetics. Es adems socio de la American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
