Elements of Good Design

a higher standard. His five standards are: 1) Design is more than meets the eye. He says its as much intellectual and visceral as it is visual. 2) Design is about communicating benefits. Whats in it for the reader/viewer? 3) Design is not about designers. Its for your client not for your portfolio! 4) Design is not an ocean; its a fishbowl. Its got to fit your target market. 5) Design is creating something you believe in. He says its better to step away from a project than to compromise your values. 10 Principles German industrial designer Dieter Rams, who is often linked with the Braun company, wrote these 10 principles of good design in 1985. 1. Good design is innovative. 2. Good design makes a product useful. 3. Good design is aesthetic. 4. Good design makes a product understandable. 5. Good design is unobtrusive. 6. Good design is honest. 7. Good design is long lasting. 8. Good design is thorough down to the last detail. 9. Good design is environmentally friendly. 10. Good design is as little design as possible. Okay, so what do you think? Id love to hear from readers about your principles of good design. Send me your thoughts at mikeneer@coreldrawhelp.com

The winners have been announced to Corels 2011 International Design Contest, and the entries are outstanding. What comes through clearly is the tremendous originality of the contestants. This is apparent in their style, in their choice of subject, and, Im sure, even in their definition of what makes good design. Every CorelDRAW user has his or her idea of what is good design, and it may change with the type of project as well. But not everyone is able to state what makes it good; many would say its a feeling, a look, which comes through the art and also meets the needs of a customer. I believe its a good idea to describe what you do in words; it clarifies and sharpens how you work. So So that sent me on a search for some good definitions of good design. Here are three different examples; see what you think. Building blocks and big picture Jacci Howard Bear from About .com says good design has two layers the building blocks and the big picture. Her building blocks include lines, shapes, mass, texture, and color. The big picture, however, includes six principles balance, proximity/unity, alignment, repetition/ consistency, contrast, and white space. Communication art Chuck Green from ideabook.com Design Store says design is a communication art, and people should follow

Arranging Objects (X5)
Objects in CorelDRAW There are two basic types of objects in a CorelDRAW layout, Bitmaps and Vectors. Bitmap Objects Bitmap objects are essentially pictures. Even if its a picture of a line drawing, its still a bitmap. Bitmaps contain PIXELS (Picture Elements). Each pixel has a specific location (i.e. address) in two-dimensional space. It also has a color assignment. When we view bitmaps normally, our eye merges the pixels into a continuous tone image. Vector Objects Vector objects are described by mathematical formulasthey include lines; arcs; circles and ellipses; squares and rectangles; polygons; text; etc. Arranging Objects Objects in the layout can be arranged, either by (1) Grouping them, or if they are vector objects, (2) Combining them. Bitmap objects cannot be combined; they can only be grouped.

Training

Grouping Objects When objects are grouped they 1. Lock in their spatial relationshipfor arrangement purposes, groups of objects are treated as a single object; that said, objects within the group can be rearrangedi.e. their spatial relationship to one another can easily be changed. 2. Maintain their individual characteristicsin the case of Vector Objects that means they maintain their unique outline and fill characteristics. In addition, a group of objects can be grouped with other objects or groupsi.e. you can have groups within groups. Combining Vector Objects Only vector objects can be combined together. When that is done, the objects become a single object. That meansas a single vector object, it can only have one fill characteristic and one outline characteristic. Combined objects lose their original individual characteristics. In addition, the spatial relationship between separate objects that are combined can only be changed using the shape tool, or by breaking the objects apart. Conclusion Both types of object arrangements have their advantages and disadvantages. More on that in future tips. Judy and John McDaniel

Page Commands (X4)
There are several ways for you to add or delete pages within a document. You can use menu commands, shortcuts or certain page views. Inserting Pages and Setting Options Choose Layout / Insert Page from the main menu. This will open the Insert Page dialog which has several new page properties options for you to choose from, including where you would like to add the new page within your current document. To add a page from the current page you are using, right-click the page tab and choose Insert Page Before or Insert Page After from the pop-up menu.

Training

The Insert Page option allows you to enter the number of new pages you would like to add to the document and where you would like to add the new pages. You can also change the page orientation and/or size of the pages.

Deleting Pages You can delete page(s) from a document by choosing Layout / Delete Pages from the main menu. A dialog menu will open showing the current page in the Delete Page box (by default). From here, you can delete the current page or you can select any page before or after the current page. You may also delete a sequence of pages. Click the Through to page: option. This will allow you to delete all pages in a range that is indicated by the Delete Page box and the Through to page: option. Moving and Duplicating Pages To move a page, you use the click-drag method on a page tab. Click and hold down the mouse button on a tab and then drag it to a new position. To copy a page (which will create a new page order), hold CTRL and then click-drag a page tab to a new location. All of the contents on the original page tab will be copied to the new page tab location. CorelDRAW does not copy or duplicate the tab name so be sure to name your duplicate page after it has been created.

You can quickly add a new page to the beginning or the end of your document by going to the first or last page of your document and clicking on the Plus (+) symbol located to the right or left of the page number buttons in the lower left portion of your document window.

Interface with HTML

HTML HTML, or Hypertext markup language, is the structural component for most web documents. An extremely simple HTML web page example can contain the document type, a head, and a body. <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC .> <html> <head id=header> </head> <body id=body> </body> </html> The preceding web page is completely blank. HTML has defined what document type to use, and that there is a head and a body. There is no content in the web page. Notice that the head and body sections both have an associated

Introduction In this article we will be briefly discussing HTML used in the construction of a common web page and how HTML can be accessed in Corel Website Creator (CWC) X5. For more in depth examples of HTML, visit www.w3schools.com . Chicken Noodle Code Most internet web pages are made of a variety of code types. HTML, CSS, JavaScript, JQuery, AJAX, PHP, and SQL are all commonly seen in current web pages. Each of these code types has a different base function. Each of the code types handles a portion of the web experience. In the early days of internet web programming all of the code was stuffed directly onto an HTML document. Now structure, functionality, content, and appearance are all handled separately. In CWC, we can access code for all of the languages either through the interface or by pointing to external files.

Image 1: Select GO HTML SOURCE on Page and CWC will display the HTML structure and code.

ID. The ability to identify or name HTML elements is extremely powerful and is the primary method by which scripts access and change the web page dynamically. Directly accessing HTML in Corel Website Creator X5 In CWC, a page must be loaded to view the HTML code directly. By default, the CWC will load up the site map. Once the map is loaded, select PAGE. Page will give us a working view of our website. Select GOHTML SOURCE (see Image 1) and CWC will display the HTML structure and code. Once the HTML SOURCE view is open, selecting an element in the document map will also highlight the element in the HTML SOURCE pane (see Image 2). To manually enter HTML codes, simply click on the HTML in the HTML SOURCE view and start typing. Contextually viewing HTML for a given element Corel Website Creator is designed to spare you from having to actually write HTML code. You can view the HTML for any specific element by selecting the element (see Image 3) and then selecting the HTML tab under the properties view. The HTML tab will bring up the HTML code for the selected element (see Image 4). How to change element attributes in Corel Website Creator In our properties view, there are various tabs that allow access to different element attributes. The properties for the selected element allow on-the-fly click and change for HTML attributes as well as CSS (element styling) without having to dig into the HTML or CSS code directly. In addition, some of the standard image corrections we can make in Corel are also controlled via the picture properties view. The starting view for properties is the General view (see Image 5). To change the picture alignment, select the Align tab in Properties (see Image 6). The Geometry tab allows us to change the overall image size, crop, mirror, and rotate the image on the fly (see Image 7). Brightness, contrast, hue, and saturation can all be changed on the fly in the Adjustments tab (see Image 8). We can individually size and color each border for our element with the Borders tab (see Image 9). With the Text on Image tab (see Image 10), we can add text over top of our image and select a variety of fonts, sizes, and colors for the text. The Red Eye Removal tab is similar to the red eye removal tool in CorelDRAW. The Hot Spot tab (see Image 11) helps

Conclusion Corel Website Creator is designed to add a visual representation of the changes made to HTML code and allow an easy point-and-click interface to change the attributes for elements in our web pages. CWC brings together visual HTML, and CSS editing, with some of the features that make CorelDRAW great. In our next article, we will discuss Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and Corel Website Creator along with beginning dynamic web page development. to keep track of any hot spots that may be assigned to an image and what the hot spot function is. The Actions tab (see Image 12) is where actions can be assigned to an element. The Actions tab is extremely powerful and we will cover it in-depth later on in this article series. The Actions tab allows for dynamic content in your web pages. A good example might be hovering over an image to pop up a description of the image. How to change an element ID in Corel Website Creator The element ID is one of the most important attributes of any element in an HTML page. By using an exact element ID, we can alter, delete, augment, and completely change the appearance and contents of the element. To access the ID, we select the Image <img> element properties and simply type in the ID we would like to use (see Image 13). Corel Website Creator automatically assigns an ID, but we may want something more memorable than Picture9. When we work with dynamic scripting languages like JavaScript, many of the operations start with a search for a specific element ID.

Corel Tips
Transforming Objects - Transformation is any type of change to an objects shape or position. CorelDRAW keeps track of these changes in size, position, width, height, scale, skew and rotation angle. CorelDRAW X4 remembers the original shape of your object regardless of the number of transformations (changes) to the object. You can restore the objects original shape and size by removing all of the transformations from the object. You do this by choosing Arrange>Clear Transformations from the Menu Bar. This will bring back the objects original shape. Document Border - Need a border around your document quickly? Double-click the Rectangle Tool button in the Toolbox. You may then make adjustments to the border such as increasing the point size of the border and/or rounding the corners from the Property Bar.

Creating Artwork for Sandblasting Part 1

Review So far, in this series, weve covered: 1. Why we chose sandblasting. 2. Products you can produce with the process. 3. An overview of the process and its requirements. 4. A detailed review of the hardware and materials required for the sandblasting process, which includes Sandblast cabinets, Compressors, Abrasives, Nozzles, Dust Collectors, Masking materials and their applications, Exposure units for photo-masking (Vinyl cutters for vinyl masking and Laser engravers for laser masking) Before we continue into creating artwork for sandblasting, we need to cover What you must absolutely have for sandblasting vs. optional equipment First, what you absolutely must have 1. A Sandblast cabinet 2. Dust Collector 3. Abrasive 4. Nozzles 5. An Air Compressor 6. Sandblast masks a. Permanent Stencils acrylic/metal (These can be purchased from many craft stores.) b. One-time use Stencils (Vinyl which are cut by hand, or Photo Masks prepared by outside companies). Then, Optional Equipment 1. A graphic workstationi.e. Computer 2. Graphic Software 3. A more sophisticated method of producing masks: a. Vinyl Masks cut by machine b. Photo Masks (A Film Printer and Exposure Unit) c. Laser Masks cut with a laser engraver Starting out with a Computer As we mentioned above, you can start sandblasting without a graphic workstation, i.e. computer. There are permanent stencils you can purchase from many craft stores. You can choose to hand-cut vinyl. You can also send cameraready art, which you might receive from your customers, to sandblast supply companies and they will create photomasks for you. (Typically this is only cost effective for multipiece runs.) That being said, when we purchased our sandblast equipment, we already had a number of computer workstations and were working with CorelDRAW. In addition, since neither one of us is very good as a freehand artist, we also purchased graphics and clipart packages that had images we wanted to use. Armed with a computer, CorelDRAW (which already comes with a lot of clipart), and our clipart packages, we simply assembled images with text as required for our projects. The computer also allows us to maintain files of past projects as templates that we can modify to use again and again. If you dont already have a computer, we would recommend anything that can run CorelDRAW, or whatever graphic package youd like to use. Since, for photo-masking, all you need to do is print your artwork on a film printer, it doesnt matter if you choose a PC or Apple system, as long as its compatible with your printers. If youre also running other equipment, like engravers, vinyl cutters etc.,

you need to select a computer thats compatible with both the hardware and driving software. Generally, that will mean a PC. Lets look at a workstation suitable for running CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X5. Minimum Computer System Requirements Operating System Microsoft Windows 7, Windows Vista, or Windows XP, with the latest service pack installed (32-bit or 64-bit editions).Authors notemost new computers are running 64-bit operating systems. If you have older equipment, you need to make sure it will be compatible. Computer Processor Intel Pentium 4, AMD Athlon 64, or AMD Opteron Authors note the CorelDRAW X5 suite takes advantage of the multi-threading capabilities of many of the newer computer processors. Memory 512MB of RAM (1GB recommended) Authors note for Windows XP we recommend 512 as a minimum and prefer 1GB, especially if you intend to work with bitmap images. For Windows 7 and Vista we recommend 2GB as a minimum. Hard Disk Space 750MB (1GB for typical installation without content) Authors note thats what is required for the program, youll need additional space for file storage. We recommend 80-120GB drives as a minimum. Monitor Resolution 1,024 x 768 or better (768 x 1024 on Tablet PC). Authors notewe are using large 21 high-resolution displays. They are not that expensive, and really help our aging eyes. DVD drive Mouse, Trackball, or Tablet Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 or higher To that, we recommend adding An external hard-drive for backupWindows 7 has auto-backup built in. Its not a question of Will your system fail?; its When will your system fail! -- or be infected by a computer virus. Keep in mind, even if you are not connected to the internet, your system can be infected unknowingly by customer-supplied files. In todays world, backup is essential. A medium resolution flatbed scannerto use for customer-supplied cameraready and not-so-ready artwork. At least one inkjet printersuitable to print film for photo masking. Check with the film supplier for printer recommendations. Getting Started in Print-and-Cut Heat-Applied Graphics

Its hard not to be impressed with the amazing versatility and potential profitability of print and cut technology.

One of the newest members of the print-and-cut machine family is Rolands VersaStudio BN-20 printer. Its 20 inches wide and also can do metallic inks and white just like its big brother the VersaCAMM VS series, which starts at 30 inches wide. Photo courtesy of Imprintables Warehouse, Masontown, Pa.

Diversification is the name of the game for any business that wants to survive and thrive in todays economic conditions. And there is no single piece of equipment that is more diversified than a printer/cutter. Print/cut machines have been around long enough that most industry members know what they are, but just in case you are one of the few who doesnt, a print-and cut device acts like two machines in one. First, a design or graphic is inkjet printed on white media, then the machine draws the media back on the roller and on this second pass, a knife contour cuts each image. If youve used a heat-applied material, its weeded and applied to apparel or anything made out of fabric like tote bags, sneakers, and umbrellas, with a heat press. If youve used a self-adhesive material, you weed it and apply to whatever it is you are decorating. Banners are directly ink jet printed so there is no weeding or additional application steps for those.

Limitless decoration Whats so cool about a printer/ cutter is there is an almost endless list of items you can decorate with it. On the apparel side, there are printer/cutter materials that will go on almost anything including hard-todecorate fabrics like nylon, Spandex, and even leather. On the sign/graphics side, you can make window decals, wall graphics, posters, bumper stickers, banners, magnets, all kinds of signage, and even outdoor awnings that go over windows and doors. for each supporting company to hang up against the back fence of the baseball field. Not finished yet, the savvy shop owner tops his presentation off by showing how custom wall graphics of the players or a giant mascot can be applied to almost any surface. In a short conversation, this owner has covered four applications that the team would easily be interested in and all of them produced on the same piece of equipment. Cross selling is the name of the game! Expand your business Print and cut is a great fit for any business that is looking to expand, whether its a decorated apparel shop, awards and trophies, or promotional products. My wife and I purchased our first Roland VersaCAMM printer/cutter about six years ago. We had an embroidery-based business and also were doing some heat-applied graphics at the time. What size printer/cutter you choose, depends on what you want to do with it. The 20-inch printer is great for chest-size T-shirt transfers, decals, and stickers, but if you decide you want to do banners, youll need at least a 54-inch printer. Photo courtesy of Imprintables Warehouse, Masontown, Pa. This technology has allowed us to expand our business into so many different areas, and it has helped us compensate

What does this mean for your shop? No matter what type of customers you have, you can now offer a greater selection of products to help them promote their business, event, or activity. If its a golf tournament and youve done golf shirts, suggest a customized umbrella or shoe bag. If its a trade show, instead of only uniforms, suggest stickers to be given away, tote bags, or a banner for the booth. If youre doing team uniforms for the local high school, think of all the window decals, bumper stickers, and wall graphics that the booster club can sell with the high schools logo and team name. You now have the power to incrementally increase a sale to every single person who walks in the door. You can even do full vehicle wraps with a printer/cutter, a service that commands top dollar in most markets. Having this versatility means that you have multiple revenue streams from a single piece of equipment. The other great plus of a printer/cutter is you no longer have to charge by color. The inkjet printer can do limitless colors, and you charge a flat fee. Theres no screen setup, no digitizing, none of the added fees that are necessary with screen printing and embroidery that many clients balk at when you have to explain them. To return to the example of the local high school, imagine this scenario: While the shop owner talks to the coach about uniforms, another staffer explains to the booster club president about fund-raising and how the club can sell decals with their players names and numbers to raise money. Most high school teams have sponsors who need to be recognized. You can easily provide a banner

The latest print-and-cut models have the capacity to print metallic inks. By using the metallic as spot color, you also can create a holographic or 3D textured look. There are 26 preset textures and holographic effects included with the printer. Photo courtesy of Imprintables Warehouse, Masontown, Pa.

places like MyVersaCAMM.com where users help one another answer questions. When evaluating the machine, it will be necessary to decide if features such as metallic inks and white inks add value to the current business. Get samples of the print output and look for a dealer that will print your own graphics to see if it is a solution that will fit in your shop. Metallic inks are a relatively new technology and are mostly used when creating decals or stickers. By using these shiny colors as a highlight, you can add some extra umph to a design. White inks also are available only for graphic applications. They are used to create a white underbase for clear stickers that are commonly stuck to a window. Previously a window sticker would have had to be backed with a white background, but now the printer creates the white underbase in ink and inkjets the design on top. So it saves labor and makes for a thinner finished product. There are print-and-cut materials that adhere to virtually any type of fabric including super stretchy materials such as spandex and knits. So there is no fear of a design cracking or deteriorating when stretched. Photo courtesy of Imprintables Warehouse, Masontown, Pa. for the times when embroidery is slow. With the printer/cutter we produced signage and other media from it. I think any business that is looking for a way to smooth out the ups and downs of current products and services should consider this type of investment Even if you already own a vinyl cutter, it still makes sense to consider a printer/cutter as well. Because a vinyl cutter can do only one color at a time, it dramatically limits what you can do graphically. To produce multicolor graphics, you need to layer the media, which creates extra bulk and can be unwanted as well as time consuming and costly. With a print-and-cut machine, you have the ability to produce limitless colors and even photographic prints with little effort. This allows for a higher price point as the perceived value is higher even though the labor is the same. Having the vinyl cutter, in addition to this, allows the shop owner to maximize all of his equipment as there are times when a single-color design is needed. In our shop, we often have both pieces of equipment running to meet all of our customers needs. Equipment Options There are a few manufacturers out there, with Roland and Mimaki being the largest and the best known in the industry. Buyers need to evaluate what options are best suited for them and what support is available. Whichever brand you decide on, make sure that the dealer has a good support system available. Look for on-site and phone support, Web-based support, Youtube videos, and The newest and smallest printer on the market is the Roland BN20 VersaStudio. It starts at 20 inches wide and goes all the way up to 72 inches and higher. Most shops will choose a machine in the 30-inch to 54-inch range depending on what they need to produce. I always encourage a new buyer to look at expansion in the future and make sure they are choosing a machine that will meet all of their needs. Our first Roland was a 30-inch printer/cutter. We quickly found out that it is hard to produce a 36-inch tall banner with only 30 inches of print space! If I could go back and do it all over, I would have gone with the 54-inch machine in the beginning to allow us to meet all of our customers expanding needs. For shops looking at portability, the VersaStudio BN-20 20 inch is ideal, as its light enough to transport

There are now print-and-cut devices that will print a white underbase before printing color on top. For applications like clear window decals, this eliminates the step of having to create a separate white layer that the clear window sticker would adhere to before application. to an outdoor event. So when choosing, make a list of all the things you imagine you might use the machine for and that will help guide you to choosing the right solution to meet your needs. Another plus of a printer/cutter is it does not necessarily require a lot of space. Depending on the size, you can go as small as a counter top for the 20-inch machine. However, you might need an entire room to accommodate a large 54- to 72-inch machine. Show Me The Money The capital investment will depend on what size machine. The 20-inch machine sells for as low as $8,500. This is the first time this technology has been available for under $10,000. We have already seen a huge demand, and I expect it will continue as it is now an affordable option for even a small shop. Most print/cut equipment ranges in the mid- $10,000 range up to $30,000 for a large 54-inch printer. There is a learning curve just like any other piece of equipment. Make sure that you get your machine from a dealer who is dedicated to training. When I do an installation, it typically encompasses an entire day. I offer about two hours of setup and calibration followed by user training. There also are classes available to show the user how to use the equipment to make all of the products available. If you have strong graphics knowledge already, it will help. I would estimate that on average, users are proficient at operating their new equipment within one to two months; however, they should be competent and producing products at the end of the first day! For apparel decorators, print-and-cut equipment opens up new markets as they can now offer a wide range of graphics from decals and stickers to wall graphics and banners. Photo courtesy of Imprintables Warehouse, Masontown, Pa. Reaping Profits Profit margins vary by type of product. In the garment industry, you can have anywhere from a three to four times markup. In the sign and decal industry,

margins are much higher. Sometimes the markup can be several hundred times the cost of the item produced. For example, in my area banners are sold at around $8 per square foot retail. It costs under $1 per square foot to produce this product. Remember though that a banner sale is a singlepurchase item for the customer while garments are higher volume so the profit gained from the customer usually evens out.

Those needing training have a wealth of options. There are websites such as www.myversacamm.com and many Youtube videos available for free. I am constantly adding more videos, and I take requests on my Youtube channel StevenJacksonIW. There also are on-site training and workshops available to allow the user to gain more confidence and expertise in operation and sales of products. I currently teach a two-day 101 workshop and a vehicle wrap two-day hands-on course with an advanced course being developed. The demand for continuing training is enormous! Adobe vs. Corel Both are great programs that will allow the user to produce graphics. I personally find that CorelDRAW is easier to use and a very intuitive program. All of my training videos and hands-on courses are centered around CorelDRAW. From visiting customers and doing installations of new equipment I have seen that CorelDRAW is faster to set up and train on for the new user. I am very passionate about this type of technology and how it can transform a business. If you are interested, do some research and ask the questions! I think that any shop looking into expansion should consider this type of machinery. It can transform a customer coming in the door for a single product into a multiple revenue stream. They are already getting the products from some other place and most of us would rather go to one shop rather than three or four to get what we need for our team or organization. Keep those customers coming back to you! Steven Jackson is .

ADD NEW PLUGINS TO CorelDRAW X5

Part 3: TOPAZ B&W EFFECTS Creates Stunning Results!

I have continued to search for innovative plugin software that will enhance CorelPHOTOPAINTs image processing capabilities. A plugin is simply an add-on software module that provides unique features, efficiencies, and creative tools to a major application. For a plugin to be effective, it must perform flawlessly, be reasonably priced, easy to use, and add exciting tools to the host software. TOPAZ LABS just released B&W EFFECTS as its newest plugin compatible with CorelDRAW X5 Graphics Suite. B&W EFFECTS adds substantial creative capabilities to X5. Topaz B&W Effects is a black-and-white converter and powerful image enhancer that provides you with a variety of tools that make it easy to create stunning black and white, tinted, and hand-colored compositions. More than your traditional blackand-white conversion tool, Topaz B&W Effects features a simple and unique 4-step workflow with more than 60 controls arranged in four logical categories. This gives you complete control of the conversion process. Thousands of unique effects are possible. The images included in this article provide a small sample of the capabilities. WHY IS BLACK AND WHITE CONVERSION NECESSARY? To be competitive in the personalized products market, you should differentiate yourself by creating images that are optimized for each method of image reproduction. B&W EFFECTS can help in several different areas. Here are just a few: In LASER ENGRAVING you can control contrast, exposure, and adaptive exposure. Adaptive Exposure enhances the dynamic range of an image. This allows you to improve both detail and depth. At higher settings, you can create HDR-like images. In addition, you can use other controls to: tab Simplify images and create stylized looks. tab Convert images to infrared to bring out hidden dramatic details. tab Correct exposure, balance, lighting, and redefine tonal values. Other engraving software can convert a photo for engraving, but they do not possess the same degree of creative editing capability.

High Adaptive Exposure settings were used to prepare these images for laser engraving.

on subsequent plugins due to their inherent similarities. The BW EFFECTS control screen may be the best so far as the standard workflow is so well defined. The CONTROL PANEL is dominated by a large preview screen in the center. This screen may be set up as a single or before-and-after split-screen format. To the left of the preview screen, the EFFECTS groups are defined. When an effect group is selected, its associated presets are listed in the section below. When you highlight a preset, its effect is displayed in a small window in the upper left hand corner. When you click on a preset, the converted image is displayed in the large center screen and you are ready to follow the adjustment workflow. At the bottom of this section, you can name and save your own new presets to add them to an appropriate effects group. The ADJUSTMENT WORKFLOW is defined in 4 separate submenus: 1. 2. 3. 4. CONVERSION CREATIVE EFFECTS LOCAL ADJUSTMENTS FINISHING TOUCHES

Tinting, contrast, and detail were added to this once dull color image of a cat.

FULL COLOR images can be converted to hand-tinted and toned b&w prints. More than 175 presets are provided to reproduce traditional photo printing techniques and special effects. These presets can be fine-tuned with the adjustment sliders. You can design new presets and save them for future use. Both older prints and new color images can be transformed to produce both beautiful heirloom keepsakes and modern stylized images. Actual film grains (e.g. Kodak TRI-X) can be applied to add even more realism. BW EFFECTS Simplify provides painterly effects. Most important, Simplify can serve as a pre-processor for bitmap to vector conversions. Applying Simplify adjustments gives you complete artistic control and takes a processing load off OUTLINE TRACE in CorelDRAW after an image is simplified and imported. THE CONTROL PANEL All TOPAZ LABS control panels use the same intuitive, single-page layouts. Learning curves are very short with the first plugin you install. The learning curve is even faster This single page control panel guides you through BW EFFECTS.

The functions of each submenu are summarized below: CONVERSION allows you to adjust both basic exposure, curves, and adaptive exposure. In addition, it allows you to apply color filters and selectively adjust color sensitivity. CREATIVE EFFECTS includes a powerful SIMPLIFY capability to create artistic effects and enhance images for engraving and bitmap-to-vector conversion. In addition, Creative Effects allows you to add diffusion, posterization, and camera shake to an image for additional special effects. LOCAL ADJUSTMENTS is a brush tool that allows you to modify specific areas of the converted image. The brush can be used freehand or set to be edge aware. Brush functions include restore color, erase, dodge, burn, add detail, and smooth. The brush size, overall strength, opacity, and hardness are fully adjustable. FINISHING TOUCHES allows you to add vignettes and borders to your image. You can add specific film grains and tones (including quad tones). In addition, you can control overall transparency, allowing up to 50% of the original image to show through. Follow these 4 logical adjustment steps and let your creative juices flow. The variations are countless. TEST ENVIRONMENT My testing was performed with the 64-bit version of Windows 7, a dual core processor and 3 gigabytes of DDR2 memory. Corel PHOTO-PAINT, CorelDRAW, and BW EFFECTS worked flawlessly together with this system configuration. INSTALLING BW EFFECTS in WINDOWS 7 When you install BW EFFECTS, the plugin will be saved in C:/Program Files(x86)/ Topaz Labs/BW EFFECTS. Copy (Ctrl c) and paste it (Ctrl v) into C:/Program Files(x86)/Corel/CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X5/Plugins. USING BW EFFECTS in PHOTO-PAINT and CorelDRAW In PHOTO-PAINT, open a bitmap image. Click on Effects on the top menu bar, then select Topaz Labs in the drop-down menu. Next, click on Topaz BW EFFECTS and the BW EFFECTS control panel screen will appear.

In CorelDRAW, import a bitmap image into your document. Click on Bitmaps on the top menu bar and select Plug-ins from the drop-down menu. Select TopazLabs, then Topaz BW EFFECTS from the next drop-down menu. COMMENTS AND CONCLUSIONS Topaz with BW EFFECTS has again added an extensive set of both creative and corrective tools to the X5 Suite. Topaz provides free trial downloads at topazlabs. com. Take advantage and use BW EFFECTS free for up to 30 days. Although the Topaz Labs plugins were not designed specifically for CorelDRAW X5, they work very, very well. Many other plugins from other companies will not work. I will continue to review additional compatible plugins. I remain very impressed with Topaz Labs. Their plugins are well designed, intuitive, full featured, reliable and inexpensive. Try this plugin and experience the thrill of turning both average and sometimes dull color and b&w photographs into exceptional images and unique works of art. marketing secrets
By Donna M. Gray, CRM

Just Checking In
September is here and right behind is fourth quarter. This is the time of year that we can use for just checking in to see if were close to what our goals called for on January 1. In the last couple months, Ive talked to others who are racing to get their ducks in a row so the year end will bring good news on their bottom line. Ive had chats with some who are worried. Theyre working hard to deal with the economic challenges being foisted on them, and, Ive heard from several in our industry who are complaining that even their most dependably loyal customers are taking their sweet time in placing orders. Some customers are downsizing orders, or replacing the products theyve been using with items at lower dollar amounts. When any company takes a hit like that, it throws everything off, and can make the owners, and staff, vulnerable to joining the Aint It Awful club. When times are tough, its easy to fall into the poor me habit, even to the point of digging a deeper awful pit. National best-selling author, and coach, Jack Canfield, writes in his book, The Success Principles, Most people in our culture remember their failures more than their successes. Canfield suggests building a success list, which for businesses, in our industry, can mean a wall display, a three-ring binder, or some kind of show of the work your company has done for clients, so that both existing and prospective customers can see your areas of expertise and success. Successful selling strategies are more important than ever in a weak economy, and they become even more necessary for fourth quarter if the year has brought less than expected sales. After checking in on year-to-date information, its time to create a fourth quarter game plan that will get the company to a healthy bottom line at years end. But first, a couple of housekeeping details to take into consideration are: Is the store/selling facility clean and inviting? Have figures been changed or updated? Do all display pieces have current dates/years? Is the restroom ready to be used by a customer? Is there gum on the sidewalk entryway? Have you done a complete walk through, recently, of your facility? Have you looked at your place of business through your customers eyes? Do you have a handle on your inventory levels? Are you stuck in a too much stock rut? We recently did a clean out and found lots and lots of figures that havent been popular with our customers for many years. Do you have a plan for getting rid of unused inventory? Are you, now, due to the sluggish economy, buying on as needed basis? Have you reviewed the companys break-even point? Its surprising how little things like an increase in shipping costs, that arent figured into the mix, can change the bottom line. These little things might make the difference in whether or not a sale is profitable. Think about charging for services that the company has been doing for freelike delivery. With escalating fuel costseven the big delivery companies are implementing fuel surcharges. Has your company analyzed its customers, and what and why they buy from you? What products, services, and/or features keep them coming back? Does your company watch what other companies, both in and out of the industry,

are doing to attract and retain customers? Are you monitoring the competition, both locally and on the Internet? Does your company participate in a buy local group or campaign? While its easy for customers to let their fingers do the walking on the Internet, they still prefer to shop locally, where they have the opportunity to see, touch, and feel the goods, rather than shopping from an online catalog picture. This is a good time to remind customers and prospects that buying locally saves fuel and delivery costs. Does your company act like a winner? Donna Grays 2nd book, Its All Relative!

Surviving & Thriving in a Family Business, was published in September 2007.

It describes her quest to identify the keys to success for small business, and family businesses in particular. She interviewed top businesses nationwide and discovered five common qualities implemented by successful business owners. September is a kind of in-between month, just coming off the slow season and ramping up for fall. Once a company finishes checking in on where it stands -- besides concentrating efforts on selling, selling, selling -- use the time to do some strategic planning for the next quarter. Look for ways to build relationships with existing, as well as former clients that include things like: Networking like crazy. Fill up the calendars. Traveling Tidbits
by Otis Veteto

Trade Shows and Gold!

First of allI have to do some catching up August...August was chuck-full of trade shows, traveling to and from trade shows, with a couple of days at home. Arizona The first show was in Scottsdale, Arizona (520 miles), for the Central Arizona Trophy Dealers Association (C.A.T.D.A) show. This was a oneday affair, complete with a mixture of business, food and fun, all in the same day. The show, in my opinion, was a real success. Kudos to all those who worked so hard to make this show possible! Traveling Tidbit of information.it was 111..hot. Indio and Long Beach From Scottsdale, it was off to Indio, California, for a meeting with Doug and Councilwoman Elaine Holmes, owners of PJs Desert Trophies, and McDowells Trophies in Indio. Elaine is on the Indio City Council. They were kind enough to meet with me on a day the stores were closed.. talk about nice people!! Their showroom is a work of artwell planned and presents the products very well. Only 109. From Indio, it was off to Long Beach, California, for the NBM SHOW. I had not attended this show in a long time, and did not know what to expect. It was a 3-day show, Thur/Fri/Sat. I firmly believe Saturday was the best last day of any show I have worked. The attendance was steady all day long, and the quality of customers was exceptional. Congratulations to the NBM staff..well done! Back to Long Beach Nexthome for 3 days, and back to Long Beach for the Specialty Advertising Association of California (S.A.A.C.) show. This was a mid-week (Wed-Thur) promotional products show. It seemed to me the show was not as well attended as it had been in the past, but the show overall was really well done, and I think it was worth being there. Nancy Phillips and her staff always put on a quality production. Gold #1 Personal observation3 entirely different shows put on by 3 entirely different types of organizers. 1. A volunteer committee from a local group of people who give up their time to help others be better informed of what is available to them in the way of products, services, and production. 2. A very diversified highly professional organization targeting multiple industries under the same-show umbrella. 3. A professional executive directorship with association volunteers who have one common goal -- to promote the specialty advertising/promotional products industry in Southern California. All three work very, very, very hard to make it possible for the Trophy Manufacturers, Graphic Imaging, Machine Manufacturers, Component Parts suppliers, etc, and the people who use and purchase these products to get together under one roof, and see what is available, and what is new to their industry. BUT..THEY NEED two things to make this possible.VENDORS (exhibitors) and RETAILERS (attendees). They have to have foot traffic at the shows! So please, please, pleasethe next time there is a show in your vicinity, find some time to visit the show and chat with the people exhibitinglets keep our industry strong! Gold #2 I will close with thisTheres gold in them thar hills. Only in this case, the gold really is growing on trees. In the beautiful Colorado Rockies, the Aspen are showing off their beautiful fall colors. The group of trees in the picture happen to be just outside Copper Mountain on Route 70, but this same wonderful phenomenon of nature is happening all over the Rockies. It is indeed a gorgeous site to see. Thats all for now. Remember to save some time for yourself and your family. And when you travel, please travel safe.
