REFLECTION I conducted the lesson based on my partners lesson plan, Lim Cheng Peng.

Before that we have chosen the topic What Games Do You Play? based on the World of Knowledge for Year 5. We have also discussed our focused skill would be reading and it would be integrated with listening and speaking and also writing skills. When we chose Lim Cheng Pengs lesson plan, I knew it would be an easy task to be carried out but we can adapt it and turn it into a very challenging activity for our pupils. Lims pupils are from SJK(C) background where else my pupils are from SJK. So, we have decided to follow the same activity but we are modifying our text and vocabularies based on our pupils level of proficiency. Based on the observation feedbacks form, we have concluded that the lesson was carried out successfully. I found that we have achieved the lesson objectives and were able to highlight our focused skill, that is reading. We managed to manipulate the chosen text to practice reading and emphasize the reading skill within the targeted time limit. The reading activity was quite stimulating as pupils were very interested to learn about sportsman and their achievements. The text also provided ample information for the pupils to carry out the next task that is writing. I was able to conduct the lesson in a cheerful and motivating mood as the pupils were excited to participate and contribute to the objectives achievements. The key to the successful lesson was the planning itself. We managed to come to an agreement to choose this topic as it is the next topic in the syllabus for our Yearly Scheme of Work and that both of us are teaching a Year 5 English class. When we went through the Weekly Scheme of Work, I have decided to teach the writing skill but Lim chose the reading skill. I prefer to teach writing because my pupils are quite proficient in reading. So I would be able to manipulate their reading skill to enrich their writing skill. Nevertheless, I could still make my lesson a challenging one by modifying the text to include more new vocabularies and longer text type. My only regret was not being able to use the LCD projector for my presentation because my school was the host for Seremban 1 District Level Semaian Wahyu Programme. Most of the classes were prepared for various competitions and presentations. Although lacking in that area, I was able to make up to it by using an enlarge version of the text and

pictures. I also had to reduce the number of pupils in my class because most of them were involved in all the competitions. I was observed by my Head of English panel, Pn Easwary a/p Kaliappan. She was quite disappointed with the overall situation but advised me to make the best out of it. She also encouraged me to carry out the lesson as planned. Her first comments were that the pupils have good pronunciation. I was also surprised that the pupils were able to pronounce the terms used in a factual text. I guess I owe it to the timeless reading sessions we had during our Library Hour. However, they still need model reader to improve on their stress and intonation. She was also delighted because the pupils were eager to read and they are willing to come to the front to read the text. Finally, as the result of meaningful reading and understanding, the pupils were able to answer the comprehension questions with minimum guidance. The pupils were also able to use grammatical sentence structures to answer comprehension questions. Based on my observation of Lims lesson, I found that her pupils were also engaged in the lesson. They are able to read the modified text after being guided by the teacher. There are some mispronunciations but it was corrected instantly. The teacher also used good English when giving instructions and while making explanation. Pupils were able to follow her explanation because she used language at par with her pupils level of proficiency. The use of slides had increased her pupils interest and managed to engage them throughout the lesson. It serves the purpose of being a meaningful device to enhance understanding. The lesson development begins with easy and builds up to add more difficult task for the pupils. Throughout completing this assignment, I faced several difficulties as Lim and I stay very far away from each other and we could not meet up to discuss the preparation of each task. Furthermore, she is teaching in SJK(C) which uses a totally different syllabus and text books from SK schools. We managed to call each other and update our development through emails a few times, so that we are not out of track. I find it difficult to choose suitable skills as Lim and I have different levels of students proficiency and we dont really know each others students background. We end up giving what we prefer to teach and choose similar skills from there.

I would appreciate it if IPG would arrange for a live micro-teaching session to be held outside lecture hours, so that all of us can make the observation and give feedback right away. Based on the observation, we can then make our own reflection. I feel it would be more meaningful because it is conducted live and cannot be edited or staged as when doing a video tape version. A lot of miscommunication and misinterpretation can occur while watching the video as compared to viewing it on site. The Scheme of Work is an important component in the teaching of English, so I find it unfair to treat this lecture as a small aspect in the curriculum. It should be emphasized and be given more credit hours, so that teachers are well verse and fully equipped with the knowledge of lesson planning and strategies when they face the real world. Teachers should be given the opportunity to create their own Scheme of Work, comprising of skills which they themselves chose to meet the requirements of their own students instead of the depending on the standardized outdated version. In order to do this, teachers should be given more input and knowledge in creating the English syllabus. The syllabus which my apply to one specific school only because it focuses on the specific pupils background. Last but not least, I owe a great thank you to Ms Kon who had given a lot of guidance and information about this course to us. She had shed the light to us without whom we might not be able to understand these tasks at all. She has taken to a great extent to explain and re-explain and guide us to complete each tasks. She is also willing to spend time to coach us personally, giving words of encouragement and showed her understandings throughout this course. Even though it was set as an easy assignment, it turned out to be very mindchallenging and tedious one to carry out. After reading the feedbacks and comments, I am sure I am a better teacher today because I know the impact of a well-planned lesson and its benefit to me, my pupils and the education institution.
