BOB AND DORIS MYERS
BIOGRAPHICAL SKKTCHKS

ROn AND PORTS MYFRS - Following a six year term of service in ihe Air Force Medical Service, Bob and Doris attended Ozark Christian College. While there, Bob organized the Medical Missions Program and taught the class after graduation in 1960 until 1967. At that lime, they assumed the ministry at the Coon Rapids Church of Christ, Coon Rapids, Minnesota, where they enjoyed a successful ministry. After a Faith Promise Rally at the church in October of 1975, Bob and Doris announced plans to enter Brazil as missionaries. Preparations were made in fund raising and getting the necessarypermission during the next 2 1/2 years, at which time they left the Coon Rapids church to enter the Toronto Institute of Linguistics. Following schooling, issuance of a permanent visa, and final preparations, they arrived in Belem, Para, Brazil in 1979. The missionary families in northern Brazil began missionary recruitment of teams of missionaries in June of 1983. Each family was respoixsible for recruiting while on furlough in the U.S. It soon became evident that this method was not working, so Bob and Doris returned to the U.S. to become the permanent recruiters. They also prepare the teams for service in specific major cities in northern Brazil. They currently reside in Joplin, Missouri.
Bob and Doris have six children: Rebecca Ulrich, Skyesville, MD; Paul R. Myers,

Coon Rapids, MN; Deborah Gourley, East Bethel, MN; Rachel Troutman, Denver, CO; Charles A. Myers, Coon Rapids, MN; and Margie Berggren, Tacoma, WA. They also have 11 grandchildrai.

everything is in place for our departure by July, we will then file our applications. This process is suppossed to
take about three months, but can take more or less time depending on conditions beyond our control. When the visas are granted we will have 90 days within which time we must enter the country. These "preliminary visas" will allow us

to stay in the country for the first year, and (if we prove to be good citizens) will give us the right to file for our
permanent visas.

SUPPORT IN PLACE

The level of support which has been committed to

our work remains at about 65% of what we will need to live and work in Sao Luis.

of

We want to express our deepest gratitude to those you who have become faithful partners with us in

this work.

We would like to make an appeal to all of you who are reading this newsletter, please put us in touch with additional churches which may be able to include us in their missions program. Most churches will not respond to a request from a missionary they do not know, but most will give serious consideration to a missionary who has been recomraended to them by someone

they know and trust (that's you!).

Please help us by recommending us to at least one
church this month. This is how you can do it:

1) Speak to, call, or write a leader you know within the congregation, tell them about our desire to begin a new work of establishing Christ's church in Sao Luis

2) Give them our address and phone number (see front

of newsletter) 3) Give us their address,

our

anticipated date for departure in October of this year.

So far everything seems to be on track for that date.

As we mentioned before, our ability to leave for Sao Luis this October will depend on two factors:

1) All four families must have most of their support

in place before we can file our visa applications

2) The Brazillian consulate in Chicago is responsible for processing our visa requests. This should normally be done quickly enough that if we file by the first of
August we could leave by the end of October, but there
is always the possibility requests could be delayed. that one or more of our

A SPECIAL THANK YOU

We would like to begin this issue of our newsletter by saying thank you to a very important group of our partners in mission. We want to thank those of you who contribute to our work through your local congregation. We usually do not learn the names of
individuals when donations are made in this

manner. Therefore we are not always able to send a personal thank you, instead reciepts and thank you letters are sent to the local
missions chairman or treasurer.

the church as well.

We hope the articles which follow will bring you up to date on our present situation. If you have any questions regarding our work which this newsletter does not answer, please write us at the address below

and we will be glad to reply. If you would like any of our promotional materials to share with churches in your area please let us know, the
most effective promotion we can recieve is your recommendation.

DEPARTURE DATE UP-DATE

In our last newsletter (July) we reported the two factors which would determine our date for departure (reaching at least 75% support level before visa requests can be filed, and the speed with which our

visa requests are handled - usually 60 days).

The deadline has passed which would have allowed us to leave in

October, but some good progress has been made. We are now hoping for a departure sometime in late November or early December. For this to happen we still need for all four families to reach 75% support level so visa requests can be filed. This is how everyone currently stands; - Tony and Tammy Jackson have 85% support in place - Gary and Rosie Finley have 68% support in place
- Rick and Chris Hodshire have 67% support in place - John and Ruth Navis have 45% support in place In the month of September we will present our work to three

congregations where we have not been before.

We will also be with First

Christian Church in Albuquerque, New Mexico during the last weekend in

September as they lead up to their faith promise rally in October. The congregation in Albuquerque is already supporting all four couples. They have been an integral part of this work from its beginning, and have pleged over 70% of this year's faith promise giving to the work of
Christ for Sao Luis. We are very thankful for this family of believers
who have an intense interest for what the Lord wants to accomplish in

Sao Luis and throughout Northern Brazil.

As we present the work to these interested

churches,

as other

congregations with whom we have shared in the past make their decisions,
and as the other three couples continue to present interested churches may the Lord make possible that which

Tip of the Month for the Local Missions Committee

You expect the various mission works which your congregation supports to keep you informed of what's happening with them through their newsletters. Why not keep those mission works informed of what's happening with you by including them on your church newsletter mailing
list? Good communication is two-way communication.

FISHING FOR MEN

I.
Once again we would like to say thank you to those
who have faithfully supported us for the past several months. This period of waiting before we

can depart for Sao Luis to begin our work there has
been hard for us. We are sure i t has been an

anxious time for you as well.

Your fervent prayers

on our behalf, your encouragement, and your continued promise of financial support for this work have kept us from becoming discouraged and have given us greater resolve to accomplish what the Lord wants us
to accomplish in His Name.

ROSIE'S REMARKS

Yes, the time to start packing has finally come. Packing is exciting because it means we will soon be leaving for Sao Luis. But, it is also sad because it is the last time I will see many of my belongings for a
long time.

Over the past three years, Gary and I have parted with most of our material goods ~ furniture, appliances, dishes, etc. Shipping is so expensive that it is much more cost efficient to buy new items in
Brazil after we arrive.

This "getting rid of stuff", time has been a learning experience. It has made me realize that I can

live fine without a lot. It is hard to lay all of your "stuff" out on a table and watch strangers buy it. All of it is worth much more that you can ever get for it,
both in price and in sentimental value. This reminds

me of a passage in Matthew chapter 19 where Jesus told the rich, young man to sell all that he had and give to
the poor, then he would have treasure in heaven. The

young man could not give it all up. I asked myself, could I give it all up for Jesus? Some people would

flatter us by saying we have given up a lot to go and

serve in Brazil, yet materially we have given up little. I pray that I would give up everything for Jesus in an instant. I hope you would too. He gave up
His very life for us.

DEPARTURE UP-DATE

The word

for

the month

is PROGRESS.

We are not

yet out of the country, but we are certainly much closer to our goal than when you recieved our September
newsletter.

If you remember what we reported in that issue, we

said the two factors which would determine our

departure would be: 1) We must be granted visas by the

Brazilian government, and 2) We must raise the

remainder

of

our needed

support.

Progress has been

made in both areas.

As

of

the

first

weekend

in

November

all

four

families have begun the visa application process.

We

are aware of several missionary families who have entered Brazil in the past two years. In these cases the time taken to process visa applications has taken

from as little as 2 months to as long as 4^ months. closer to 2 months, please pray along with us.
Since
now stand:

We

are praying that the time required in our case will be

our

last newsletter we have also made some

important progress in gaining support.
