For nearly 150 years, Holy Names University has been educating students at our location in Oakland, California. Climb the 106 steps to the top of campus to view the San Francisco Bay Area laid out before you. The value of our location goes beyond the priceless view or the scenic beauty of the campus, attending HNU allows you to live and learn in one of the most desirable locations in the United States. Cultural, intellectual, and recreational activities abound in every direction. Ideally located near the cities of San Francisco, Emeryville, Berkeley, and San Jose, HNU offers a safe and lively home base to access the numerous sports teams, world class restaurants, museums, and theaters. The hills above the University have numerous hiking trails, public parks, and the famous Chabot Space and Science Center is less than five minutes from campus.

Service and Social Justice


Holy Names University is committed to inspiring you to take action. We expect you to do more. Go beyond attending class, listening to lectures, and reading textbooksengage in the world at every step in your education. HNU students are activists, leaders, and mentors. We believe in striving for social justice through service. Students take what they learn in the classroom out into the world to effect change. Throughout the year, you have opportunities to engage in service projects such as participating in Habitat for Humanity in Oakland, walking for breast cancer research, giving blood for the American Red Cross, building houses in Tutwiler, Mississippi, or attending the SOA Watch Vigil at the School of the Americas in Fort Benning, Georgia.

The J.M. Long Foundation Lounge provides a space for students to study, meet, take a break between classes, or eat a snack from Rosies Caf located directly across the hallway. The Center for Social Justice and Civic Engagement (CSJCE) is a hub of activity and home to the community-based learning courses and leadership programs. Join others at a Justice Caf in the J.M. Long Foundation Lounge. The Student Success Center (SSC) offers career services, computers, printers, and a seminar room for student use. It is also home to the offices of Student Success and Retention and the Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management. The Advising and Learning Resource Center offers assistance with academic planning, tutoring, other learning resources, and disability services.

Technology
On campus we stay connected as a community through electronic communication portals like Blackboard and MYHNU student email. Wireless internet throughout the campus allows you to form study groups and research your next essay from just about anywhere youd like. The Paul J. Cushing Library is fully equipped with the latest technology and staffed by exceptional professionals who provide far more than research assistance. Access millions of journal articles, request books from libraries worldwide, attend the Cushing Library Salon Series, or check-out an iPad or laptop. The HEDCO Technology Center has state of the art cross-platform large screen Apple computers making it simple to use them as a PC or Mac.

Imagine a total educational experience that helps you achieve your academic, athletic, and personal goals. Our student athletes have won 54 conference championships, made 36 appearances at national championships, and received numerous individual awards (35 AllAmericans, 53 Academic All-Americans, 25 Conference MVPs). At HNU, you will join a community of leaders on and off the playing fields! Our student athletes serve in leadership positions across campus and on the Student Athlete Advisory Committee. Last year alone, our student athletes performed more than 40,000 service hours! The leadership and guidance our coaches provide have garnered 26 Conference Coach of the Year Awards. HNU Athletics was recently advanced to candidacy year two of the NCAA Division II membership process and competes in the Pacific West Conference, which includes universities in California, Hawaii, and Utah.

While you may come up with great ways to have fun on your own, student organizations like the HNU Spirit Club and the Outdoor Activities Klub (OAK), make sure that there is always something fun to do on or around campus. You will probably find that there is already a club or organization that is dedicated to one of your favorite activities. If there isnt, be creative! At HNU, students are encouraged to start new clubs and initiate new activities. Various departments at HNU sponsor events both on and off campus throughout the year. Attend a concert or the theater, ski in the mountains, boat on Lake Merritt, watch a sporting event, or listen to a lecture. There is always something happening here.

Specifically designed to help students connect with each other, faculty, and staff, the experience will help you aquire tools for success in college. The Value of HNU

In the form of a HNU grant or scholarship assistance, 100 percent of the incoming students to Holy Names University receive institutional aid. This is money we give you to help pay for school that you dont ever have to pay back. It is the goal of HNU to assist students with the overall cost of attendance: tuition, books, room and board, travel, etc. Along with HNU financial assistance, most students will apply for federal financial aid using the FAFSA (free application for federal student aid), which can be found at www.fafsa.ed.gov. The application is free and this is how you qualify for grants, loans, and federal work study to assist in paying for college. California residents who qualify for the Cal Grant will receive up to $9,084 per year to help pay for school at Holy Names University. The HNU code for the FAFSA is 001183.

HNU Admissions and Requirements


Freshman applicants are considered for admission based on the overall strength of their high school record, SAT or ACT scores, an essay (prompts provided), leadership and extracurricular activities, and letters of recommendation. We are looking for well-rounded and curious students who are prepared for the academic rigor of a university. Students must have completed the minimum curriculum required for high school graduation in order to be eligible for admission. Some majors may be looking for proficiency in particular areas such as math and science. Contact your HNU admissions counselor for more information on admission criteria or call 1-800-430-1321.
