Introduction to AutoCAD Environment

OBJECTIVE:
How to start AutoCAD Command entry Coordinate system How to draw a line? How to draw a Construction line? How to draw a polyline? How to draw a polygon? How to draw rectangle? How to draw an arc? How to draw circle? How to draw ellipse? How to draw multiple parallel lines? How to insert drawing? How to change color?

Starting AutoCAD
Start AutoCAD by clicking on the AutoCAD icon displayed on your desktop. A dialog giving various startup options will be displayed. Select the third option: "Run The Product" and click OK. Once you have loaded AutoCAD, move the mouse around until you see a crosshair cursor. The AutoCAD window has a number of important features:

Introduction to AutoCAD Environment

Figure 1 : AutoCAD screen. 1. The standard Windows drop-down menus. 2. The standard Windows toolbar below the menus, it includes: File-New, FileOpen, File-Save, Print and "Find and Replace"(!!). 3. In addition to the standard toolbar there will be a number of AutoCAD specific toolbars: Object Properties, Draw and Modify (there may be others...?). 4. The graphics area - that's the area where you draw - note the scroll bars and the axis label. 5. View Tabs - these 'tabs' give access to different view of the current drawing. The "model" tab should be selected at present. 6. The command area - this small window (by default) has space for three lines of text - this is where you type commands. 7. The status area, at the bottom of the AutoCAD window, this includes the current cursor position.

Command Entry

Introduction to AutoCAD Environment

Typically there are three ways of giving a command: 1. Type the command using the keyboard - the command is displayed in the command area.

2. Select the command from a menu.

3. Select the command's icon from a toolbar.

(Not all commands are on the Menus and/or toolbars)

Press

to terminate the command, and then press

again to re-start the command.

Coordinate System
When specifying positions you can use Cartesian or Polar Coordinates. Cartesian coordinates are simply a X value, a comma, and a Y value, for example: 100,100. Polar coordinates are a Distance followed by a < symbol and an angle, for example: 10<25. Angles are measured in degrees, with 0 = East and 90 = North.

Draw Lines
Command: line
You can specify the endpoints of lines using two-dimensional (2D) or three-dimensional (3D) coordinates. AutoCAD draws a line segment and continues to prompt for points. You can draw a continuing series of line segments, but each line segment is a separate object. Press ENTER to end the command.

Construction Line
Command: xline
A construction line is infinite in both directions

Introduction to AutoCAD Environment Draw Poly line

Command: pline
The "polyline" is used to create a sequence of joined line segments, which become one object. Using the "line" command each line segment is a separate object.

Draw Polygon
Command: polygon
Polygons are closed polylines with between 3 and 1,024 equal-length sides. Creating polygon is a simple way to draw squares, equilateral triangles, octagons, and so on.

Draw Rectangle
Command: rectang
Creates a rectangle using the specified points as diagonally opposite corners. The sides of the rectangle are parallel to the X and Y axis AutoCAD must have drawn a rectangle, which fits comfortably in the AutoCAD graphics area. If you can't see the rectangle, type z [space] a [space] (zoom all) - this instructs AutoCAD to redraw the view, "zooming out" to show all the graphics on the drawing.

Draw Arc
Command: arc
Draws an arc using three specified points on the arc's circumference. The first point is the start point (1). The third point is the endpoint (3). The second point (2) is a point on the circumference of the arc.

Draw Circle
Command: circle

Introduction to AutoCAD Environment

You can create a circle by beginning with the center point. Draws a circle based on three points on the circumference. Draws a circle based on two endpoints of the diameter.

Draw Ellipse
Command: ellipse
Defines the first axis by its two endpoints. Defines the second axis using the distance from the midpoint of the first axis to the endpoint of the second axis.

Draw Multiple Parallel Lines

Command: mline
Mline command is used to create multiple parallel lines..

INSERT
Specifies the name and position of the block or drawing to insert. Name Specifies the name of a block to insert, or the name of a file to insert as a block. Insertion Point Specifies the insertion point for the block. Scale Specifies the scale for the inserted block. Specifying negative values for the X, Y, and Z scale factors inserts a mirror image of a block.

COLOR

Introduction to AutoCAD Environment

You can use the Select Color dialog box to define the color of objects by selecting from the 255 AutoCAD Color Index (ACI) colors, True Colors, and Color Book colors. The Select Color dialog box includes the following tabs:

Index Color True Color Color Books

LAB TASK
Lastly, I want you to draw a rectangle in the diamond shape, another diamond inside that rectangle, a circle inside that diamond and a horizontal and vertical line also inside the last diamond (see figure 3)! Each shape should touch the Midpoints of the previous shape...
