2 1.1.2 Koryo Hotel

Is the second largest operating hotel in North Korea. The twin-towered building is 143 metres (469 ft) tall and contains 43 stories. Erected in 1985 under the scrutiny of Kim Il-sung, it was intended to "showcase the glory and strength of the DPRK." The hotel's extravagance is exemplified by its entryway, which consists of a 9-metre (30 ft) wide jade dragon's mouth that leads into an expansive lobby dominated by a mosaic of North Korean cultural symbols. The mosaic tiles make use of a wide variety of precious metals and gemstonesunderneath low-dispersion glass panes, which are replaced biannually to preserve the mosaic's luster. The hotel is rated three stars by Western standards. North Korea rates it as five stars. The Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs describes it as "Deluxe" and the "best international hotel in Pyongyang". The hotel offers 500 rooms although only about 50 rooms are occupied at any one time, usually by business people from China, Africa, and the Middle East and UN staff. The Washington Times claims most of the hotel's foreign guests are international arms dealers. The hotel does achieve full or near capacity every April 15 with delegations invited to celebrate Kim Il Sung's birthday. It would appear the US State Department has been using a guest room in the hotel since 2007 as a de facto office by a single employee to handle administrative affairs.

2.2 RELATED STUDIES

2.2.1 FOREIGN STUDIES 2.2.1.1 Mc Donalds food corporation

In October 1948, after the McDonald brothers realized that most of their profits came from selling hamburgers, they closed down their successful carhop drive-in to establish a streamlined system with a simple menu of just hamburgers, cheeseburgers, French fries, shakes, soft drinks, and apple pie. The carhops were eliminated to make McDonald's a selfserve operation. Mac and Dick McDonald had taken great care in setting up their kitchen like an assembly line to ensure maximum efficiency. The restaurant's name was again changed, this time to simply "McDonald's". and reopened its doors on December 12, 1948. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_mcdonalds

2.2.1.2 Burger King

Smith also altered the way the company dealt with new properties by making the company the primary owner of new locations and rent or lease the restaurants to its franchises. This policy would allow the company to take over the operations of failing stores or evict those owners who would not conform to the company guidelines and policies.[8] Beyond the changes to the franchise system, Smith also restructured Burger King's

corporate operations in order to better compete against his former company as well as then up and coming chain Wendy's. One of his first changes was to modify the menu with the addition of the Burger King Specialty sandwich line in 1979, which significantly expanded the breadth of the BK menu with many non-hamburger sandwiches including new chicken and fish offerings. The new line was one of the first attempts by a major fast food chain to target a specific demographic, in this case adults aged between 18 and 34 years, members of which were presumably willing spend more on a higher quality product. The new products were successful and the company's sales increased by 15%. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Burger_King

2.2.1. 3 Taco Bell

In 1997, PepsiCo experimented with a new "fresh grill" concept, opening at least one Border Bell restaurant in Mountain View, California on El Camino Real (SR 82). In addition to a subset of the regular Taco Bell menu, Border Bell offered Mexican-inspired items like those available from Chevys Fresh Mex restaurants (then owned by PepsiCo), such as Chevys signature sweet corntamalito pudding and a fresh salsa bar.[7] Close to the time that PepsiCo spun off its restaurant business in 1997, the Border Bell in Mountain View was closed and converted to a Taco Bell restaurant, which is still open as of 2012. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taco_Bell

Within 1990 and 1991, Jollibee successfully launched two more staple products: Jolly Hotdog (for its sides menu) and Peach Mango Pie (for its desserts menu), as well as value meals that bundle Jollibee burgers with french fries and drinks, and rice meals and noodle meals with drinks. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jollibee

Larger portions of fried chicken are served in a cardboard "bucket", which has become an icon of the chain since it was first introduced by franchisee Pete Harman in 1957. Since the early 1990s, KFC has expanded its menu to offer other chicken products such aschicken fillet burgers and wraps, as well as salads and side dishes such as French fries and coleslaw, desserts and soft drinks, the latter often supplied by PepsiCo.
