68thUNAnniversaryWeekKicksOff Theme:TheFutureWeWant
(Strictlyembargoeduntil12:00hrsafternoon,Tanzaniatime,17October2013) 17October2013,DaresSalaamTheMinistryofForeignAffairsandtheUnitedNationsin TanzaniajointlyorganizedaPressConferencetodaythebeginningofUNWeek,to highlightkeydevelopmentissues,successesandchallengesinthecountry.TheUNWeek thisyearisbeingcelebratedonthethemeofTheFutureWeWant. Theweekof1724Octoberrejuvenatesthelongstandingcollaborationbetweenthe GovernmentofTanzaniaandtheUnitedNations,reenforcestherolesandresponsibilities ofjointpartnershipandstrengthenscommitmentforsuccessfulimplementationofthe UnitedNationsDevelopmentAssistancePlan(UNDAP20112015)alignedwiththe Governmentsdevelopmentprioritiesforthecountry. Highlightingonthisimportantpartnershipandemphasizingupontheneedtomaintaina peacefulenablingenvironmentfordevelopmentactivities,theMinisterforForeignAffairs, HonourableBernardKamilliusMembereaffirmedtheGovernmentsstrongcommitment towardsDeliveringasOne(DaO).Hestated,Wepioneeredthisinitiativesince2007 becausewebelieveditwouldfurtherstrengthencooperationamongourGovernments,the UNandtheDevelopmentPartners.ThisinitiativehasaddressedTanzaniasdevelopment needsinoneroof,deliveringresponsiveresultscateredforthewellbeingofTanzanians frompolicysupporttosocialservicesdeliveryandpromotionofgoodgovernance.Since thetimeofadoptingtheDaOinitiative,TanzaniahasincorporatedMillenniumDevelopment Goals(MDGs)initsnationaldevelopmentframework,namelytheMKUKUTAandMKUZA (phaseIandIIonboth)intandemwithintheTanzaniaDevelopmentVision2025and ZanzibarVision2020.ThedevelopmentplansareenvisagedtowardshavingTanzania graduatefromleastdevelopedcountrytoamiddleincomecountrywithhighlevelof bothhumandevelopmentandaneconomicgrowthrateofatleast8percentperannum. EmphasizingonthethemeandrelevanceoftheUNWeek,Mr.AlbericKacou,theUN ResidentCoordinatorforTanzaniastated,TheUNhasbeenencouraginganunprecedented globalconversationonthetypeofworldthatpeoplewantbeyondPost2015,through11 thematicpublicconsultationsandsurveysonthethemesaroundinequalities,health, education,growthandemployment,environmentalsustainability,governance,conflictand fragility,populationdynamics,hunger,food&nutritionsecurity,energyandwater.The globalconversationinitiatedbytheUNengagedmorethan1.3millionpeopleinabove180 UNMemberStatessinceAugust2012.

Mr.Kacoufurtheradded,Tanzaniawasselectedasoneofthefirst50pilotstoconduct nationalandlocallevelConsultationsonPost2015.TheUNinTanzaniahascloselybeen workingwiththeEconomicandSocialResearchFoundation(ESRF),TanzaniaKnowledge Network(TAKNET)andYouth,toholdnationalandlocallevelstakeholdersconsultations. Theverypurposeofthelocallevelconsultationsinalltheregionswastobringupthose issuesthatpeoplewantedtoseehappeningbeyond2015inTanzania.Thesurveyshows thattheTanzanianyouthshaveidentifiedpopulationgrowth,employment,lowliteracy, accesstoinformation,qualityeducation,strongleadership,socialjustice,environment degradationandpovertyaskeyissuesthatneedtobetackledfirst. Inechoingthesentiments,HonourableMinisterstated,theUNsystemshouldnotonly commissionstudiesonworkingwiththeYouthbuttheTheFutureWeWantshouldbe realizedintheYouthscontext. Severalactivitiesarescheduledtotakeplacebetween1724October2013,onthetheme TheFutureWeWant: PublicDebateattheUniversityofDaresSalaam(22Oct); UNExhibitionopenforthegeneralpublicatKarimjeegrounds(24Oct); FlagRaisingCeremonyhostedbytheMinistryofForeignAffairs(24Oct); OutreachactivitiesjointlywithYouthoftheUnitedNationsAssociation(YUNA)in theMainlandandZanzibar(1724Oct). NotetotheEditors:Followingtheglobalconversation,theUNSecretaryGeneralin September2013releasedareportAMillionVoices:TheWorldWeWant.Thereport launchedcapturesthevoicesofoveronemillionpeoplefromallregionsandbackgrounds particularlythosepeoplethatarepoor,excludedormarginalized.Thiswasaneffortto identifyprioritiesforthepost2015developmentagendathatwillsucceedtheMillennium DevelopmentGoals(MDGs).Thereportrevealsthateducation,healthcare,honestand responsivegovernment,andjobsarethetopprioritiesforpeopleworldwide.
