1: Introduction
The PhaseSpace Impulse X2 system captures complex motion in real time using advanced hardware and software technology. Motion capture is accomplished by placing the PhaseSpace cameras around a capture volume, and moving objects with LEDs attached to them. The cameras detect the positions of the LEDs and transmit this information to a central computer that processes the data and calculates actual positions. These positions are then available for further processing by client systems in a client server environment. The PhaseSpace system consists of:

Cameras LED Driver Unit(s) LEDs A HUB into which the cameras connect A server computer which runs Linux and communicates with the HUB Calibration objects Server and client software Dynamic link libraries that enable a user to construct custom client programs.

The PhaseSpace Impulse X2 system has four primary components. LEDs are affixed to the target. The detectors in the Cameras detect the LED marker data. This data is sent to the HUB. The HUB collates the information from multiple cameras and relays it to the server computer. Descriptions of the hardware that make up these components are given in the sections below.

2:PhaseSpace Impulse X2 Camera

Features: Linear detector architecture Lightweight low-power design Optimized cabling 960 Hz frame rate The PhaseSpace Impulse X2 system uses high-speed, high-resolution linear CCD cameras to triangulate the position of LED markers in real time. The PhaseSpace Impulse X2 camera is the sensing element of the Impulse X2 motion capture system. The camera is based on the PhaseSpace linear detector architecture, which uses a pair of crossed linear sensors instead of the more traditional 2D image sensor. The result is a camera with an effective optical resolution of 3,600 x 3,600 (12 Megapixel) and a 60degree field of view. Sub-pixel processing results in a sub-pixel resolution of 30,000 x 30,000. Each PhaseSpace camera has two detectors. Each detector consists of a semicylindrical lens and a linear CCD at the focal distance of the lens and perpendicular to the axis of the lens. The cameras can easily be mounted on typical camera tripods or attached to walls or other permanent fixtures. Technical Specifications Dimensions: 108 mm x 83 mm x 57 mm (4.25 inches x 3.25 inches x 2.25 inches) Weight: 380 grams (13.4 oz.) Typical power consumption: 120mA @ 12V (< 2W) Extruded aluminum case 1/4-20 mounting 960 Hz frame rate Low latency: 2 frames from camera to HUB Adjustable integration time: 20 to 100 microseconds

FPGA based pixel processing Up to 1/10th pixel resolution 3600 pixel linear detector Custom aspheric plastic optics 60 degree field of view Typical range: 1 meter to 20 meters Connected with commodity shielded CAT5 cables Daisy-chained with up to 8 cameras per chain

3:PhaseSpace Impulse X2 Server Computer

IMPULSE X2 Server Computer

Features: Up to 48 cameras on one server High speed Gigabit Ethernet connection High accuracy internal clock 2.4GHz frequency hopping protocol Pre-configured for out of the box operation

The core PhaseSpace data processing software runs on the PhaseSpace X2 server computer under the Linux Operating System

The PhaseSpace HUB is integrated into the floppy bay drive of the server computer. The PhaseSpace cameras connect to the HUB, which collates the information from multiple cameras and relays this to the server computer. The server software processes the raw data from the PhaseSpace hardware, and sends it to the client software. The client software uses the PhaseSpace API to command and receive data from the system. Utilizing an Intel 64 processor, the server computer collects and processes data for up to 48 cameras. The server outputs 3D position data at 960 frames per second with less than 10 milliseconds of latency. Multiple clients (Windows or Linux) can connect to the server through a network connection. The server can be controlled entirely using client software (headless operation). The integrated transmitter is the connection between the Impulse X2 HUB and the LED (marker) system. The main function of the transmitter is to provide support for the LED Driver Units. It is the programming connection where the controllers are configured, and it provides a 2.4GHz RF timing signal to an arbitrary number of LED Driver Units. The RF protocol can be configured to allow multiple independent systems to operate in the same area with a minimum of interference. Technical Specifications Dimensions: 448 mm x 178 mm x 454 mm (17.6 inches x 7 inches x 17.9 inches) Weight: 10.7 kg Processor: Latest Intel 64 quad core processor Memory: 4 GB Network: Gigabit CD-ROM drive Integrated PhaseSpace HUB in floppy bay drive HUB supports up to 5 chains of cameras (HUB extender is available for more cameras). Each camera chain can include up to 8 cameras. Real-time viewing of data

4:PhaseSpace Impulse X2 LED Driver Unit

Features: Handheld RF driver unit Supports 6 strings of LED markers (total of 72 LEDs) 2.4GHz RF protocol Encoded over RF The LED Driver Unit is the driver of the LED modules. The unit consists of a battery pack as well as an RF receiver, which receives a timing signal from the integrated transmitter in the Impulse X2 server. Technical Specifications Dimensions: 126 mm x 70 mm x 25 mm (5 inches x 2.75 inches by 1 inch) Weight: 90 grams (3.2 oz.) Power: internally limited to 1A @ 12 V (about 12W) 2.4GHz protocol, supports multiple overlapping systems Indicators: battery power, RF signal strength, charging, modes Charge time: 2 hours to 90% capacity, 3 hours for full charge Can operate while charging (increases charging time)

Interfaces: Power / reset button 6-pin (RJ11) port 14-pin LED string port

5:PhaseSpace Impulse X2 LED Marker

Features: Active LED markers allow operation in diverse lighting conditions Physically small Highly visible A single LED marker provides x, y, z position data A minimum of 3 LED markers required for rigid body orientation data The PhaseSpace Impulse X2 LED marker is the component that is tracked by the PhaseSpace cameras. The main feature of the LED is that it emits a modulated pattern of pulses, which is used to uniquely identify each marker. The LED is connected to the LED Driver Unit using a two-wire interface (LED string). LEDs are individually tuned to one of 12 different settings. This allows for up to 12 LEDs to coexist on the same string, reducing the required wiring to a minimum. Technical specifications Dimensions: 26 mm x 16 mm x 13 mm (1 inch x 0.6 inches x 0.5 inches) Weight: 4.5 grams (0.16 oz.) Typical power: 10mA @ 6V (< 100mW) Angular visibility: 180 degrees User adjustable pulse time: up to 100 microseconds User adjustable brightness

Interfaces: 2-pin LED string connection point
