to - Face Professional Development Sessions

This year The Stephens Group is hosting two exciting professional development days at Cardinal Stritch University. The courses will
meet for one day (8am-4pm) with some online follow-up coursework. Participants can choose a professional development workshop to
attend. The early registration fee is $125.00 ($150.00 after early registration deadline). This includes the cost of the course, a
catered lunch and a keynote speaker.

Participants can earn 1 graduate credit. The cost for graduate credit is an additional $155.00.

* Groups of five or more from a school district paying by purchase order can register for $100 per person.

Keynote Speaker: Jackie Drummer

Early Registration Deadline: January 1, 2010

Jackie is the Gifted and Talented Coordinator and Differentiation Specialist for the School District of South
Milwaukee. She holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Carthage College and a Master of
Science Degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Both degrees are in
Exceptional Education. Jackie is the President of the Wisconsin Association for Talented and
Gifted (WATG) and teaches for Cardinal Stritch University, Silver Lake College and
Carthage College. She “stays real” by teaching classes at the middle school and elementary
school levels, and co-teaches at the high school level. In her spare time, she can be found
writing children’s books, traveling extensively, and making beautiful music with the
Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra.

Workshops: (Participants can choose one)

Teaching and Learning Online Using Moodle


2 Graduate Credits (Note: The Moodle Workshops will meet both the February and May workshop dates. Participants will be
expected to attend both sessions to earn 2 credits. The total registration cost for the 2 credit Moodle course is: $250, graduate
credits are $310).

This course will use Moodle as the content management resource for developing and publishing your class online.
The course will be taught as a hybrid – face to face and online course. We will meet face to face on February 5th and
May 8th with online synchronous help sessions scheduled as needed.

Emerging Technologies to Assist Struggling


Strugglin g Learners
1 Graduate Credit

This blended course is designed to be an introduction to the basic principles and concepts of using Web 2.0 tools to
assist students that have special learning needs. Web 2.0 tools are often referred to as the collaborative tools of the
Internet. The course will teach participants the capabilities of Web 2.0 tools, how these technologies interrelate, and
applications of the technology in a classroom setting. The course will focus on classroom management strategies when
using digital media with struggling students, as well as specific web-based tools for struggling students.

Differentiation in the Classroom Using Technology


1 Graduate Credit

Educators will explore ways to differentiate instruction in the classroom through Web 2.0 technologies. Exploration
of multiple intelligences, clustering and other strategies will take place. Participants will develop differentiated
materials for a lesson/unit and share these resources online with other instructors.

Paula is the Director of E- Learning at CESA 6 in Oshkosh. Paula


provides professional development to the 42 school districts within CESA 6
in various topics related to integrated use of technology within the
classroom. Paula has been working in education for over 25 years and is a
"gadget geek". She has a passion for discovering new technology tools and finding

ways to successfully integrate these tools within the curriculum to improve student
learning. Paula is also an adjunct professor at the University of WI Oshkosh and
Marian University. Paula is a frequent
presenter at both state and national conferences in the topics of Web 2.0 tools,
voice recognition, mobile tools for communication and assistive technology applications.

Digital Media in the Class room


1 Graduate Credit

The focus of this course will be on mobile technologies and the use of various digital media tools in a classroom
setting. Technology devices include digital still cameras and the use of handheld digital video camcorders (Flip cams).
The day will be spent learning hands on how to use these mobile technologies in a classroom to increase student
engagement and learning.

Using the iPod Touch in the Classroom

Today’s educators are constantly looking for tools to assist with teaching students’ 21st Century Learning Skills. iPod
Touches are a mainstream technology that has incredible educational implications for students. iPods Touches can be
used to access, manage, and even create academic content. They can allow students to listen to directions, lessons,
and information at a rate, volume, and frequency that benefits their learning style. This session will open the door to
possible applications in your curriculum to enhance and extend student learning.

Using Technology in Performance - Based Assessment


1 Graduate Credit

Project-based learning which emphasizes learning activities that are student-centered, interdisciplinary, and
integrated with real-world issues and practices often requires performance-based assessment strategies. Technology
has certain unique capabilities that can make crucial contributions to the creation of workable and meaningful forms
of these types of assessments. In this course, participants will explore the use of emerging technologies such as
Rubistar, Wikis, Moodle, VoiceThread in creating strong assessment practices and consider strategies such as rubric
assessment and performance-based assessments.

Introduction to Instructional T ech in the Classroom


Session 1: October 5- October 23
Session 2: November 30- December 18

What does it mean to be truly technologically literate? In this 3-week course, participants will be exploring each of
the six International Society of Technology Education (ISTE) student standards for technology proficiency. It is our
belief that in order to be able to deliver these types of learning experiences for our students, we must experience
learning in this way ourselves.

The course is divided into three weeks. Each week a different instructor will take the lead in leading explorations in
two of the six themes. Our schedule is as follows:

• Week 3: Research and Information Fluency and Critical thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making

Tech Literacy 101: Foundations in Collaborative Tools New!


Session 1: September 7-October 2
Session 2: December 7- January 1

This course will introduce educators to the concept of “cloud computing” and the use of open source applications to
establish their own presence on the web for purposes of professional development and collaboration. Participants will
establish their web presence with the creation of an online home site. Course activities will then follow that promote
online collaboration in creating documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. Participants will complete the course by
linking their online workspaces and documents to their home-site for future access and regulated sharing. Through
the design of the online course, students will collaborate and share ideas in a community of practice throughout the
experience.

Tech Literac y 102: Building Knowledge Management Systems

In this course we will examine online tutorial sites, social networking tools and knowledge management systems as
sources of just-in-time support for integrating technology into the teaching and learning process. Educators will build
peer networks of online support.

Tech Literacy 103: Utilizing Social Networking Tools in a Leadership Capacity


• Session 1: October 5-30
• Session 2: December 7 – January 1

This course examines the intersection of three topics: technical knowledge, learning pedagogy, and digital culture.
Participants will learn about best practices for serving in a leadership capacity by creating knowledge sharing social
networks in their organizations through the use of Web 2.0 and social networking tools. Educators will assess existing
resources and peer evaluate one another’s work to practice evaluating components of a well designed online technical
resource. Participants will demonstrate their knowledge through creation of an online technical resource designed to

help colleagues in their organization. Throughout the course we will model a community of practice so that
participants can go out and help foster these types of learning environments in their own learning organizations.

Survey of Emerging Technologies
Session 1: September 7-October 2
Session 2: November 2- November 27

1 Graduate Credit

Through exploration and investigation, course participants will become more in-tune to the innovations in the K-12
education field and develop their skills to be leaders in their own organizations. Educators will examine the latest
educational technologies and look into ways to effectively incorporate new technology into their curriculum.

Participants will be active learners completing specific projects and course-long assignments that will assist them in
developing new skills.

Creativity and Innovation in the Classroom

Participants will study current trends, research, best practices and instructional strategies for creating and facilitating
student learning and creativity. This course focuses on ISTE’s 2008 NET Teacher Standard, Facilitate and Inspire
Student Learning and Creativity.

Educators will create curriculum and project ideas that support this standard to be used in their current professional
settings. Participants will learn about best practices when integrating technology and inspiring student learning.
Educators will assess existing resources, evaluate one another’s work through a Community of Practice, and will
demonstrate knowledge through the creation of an online e-portfolio.

Using the Read Write Web to Build Student Engagement

Course Description: Web 2.0 is fundamentally changing the ways by which students of the Millennial Generation
(ages 4–25) interact with information. There are numerous free web resources such as VoiceThread, Google Docs,
blogs and wikis that allow your students to produce projects that are “living documents” rather than static projects.
Educators will be exposed to these tools and create a classroom lesson using one or more of these tools.

Building an Online Professional Learning Community

Course Description: Most practicing teachers, administrators, or managers are not involved in vital, active,
engaged, professional learning communities. One barrier is often incompatible schedules. Online tools can transform
schedules and provide Real Time Professional Development for educators. Participants will be exposed to online
tools such as twitter, social bookmarking tools, Blogs, and Plurk and will begin to build their own professional
learning networks.

Google Tools for Educators and Administrators

Course Description: Google created a set of tools that makes collaborating in the classroom and district so much
more user-friendly. This course will focus on the many free tools that Google offers for teaching and learning.

based images, text, recorded audio narration, video clips and/or music. Digital stories can vary in length and can be
used with students at all grade levels in a wide variety of curriculum-related topics.

Podcasting in the C lassroom

Course Description: Learn how to create a podcast with your students. Educators will create a 3 to 5 minute
podcast in this workshop. This workshop is designed for all skill levels to attend. Mac users will be learning
GarageBand and Windows users will be using Audacity.

Free Digital Media Tools f or the Classroom

Course Description: In the Web 2.0 age, there are numerous free web resources that are available to be
integrated into the classroom setting. The course is designed to expose the educator to a plethora of free tools.

Emerging Technologies to Assist Struggling Students

Course Description: This class will focus specifically on Web 2.0 tools that struggling students can use to assist in
access to the general curriculum. Many of the sites will include voice output and other technologies that encourage
independence.

Using Digital Images in the C lassroom

Course Description: Explore connections between emerging literacies and writing, reading and learning in
content areas and strategies to stimulate inquiry, creativity, critical thinking and digital storytelling. Both Digital
video and digital photography will be explored as well as tagging images to create a repository of resources for
teachers to use in the classroom.

On - Line – Plan and Design for Implementation
1 Graduate Credit

So now that you have learned how to create a unit in an online environment what do you do next? Take this
opportunity to plan and design an online unit that will be implemented with students or co-workers.

In this course you will use the online environment to share strategies, tips and tricks as you designing and implement
your online unit. You may develop a new unit or refine and implement your unit from the introductory course. The
key here is a live participatory audience. This course is only open to students who have completed the Teaching and
Learning online course.

In this course students will continue to gain and share experience as an online-instructor as you
• continue to explore several online learning tools,
• learn and apply concepts and techniques that make us effective online facilitators and learners,
• develop and implement strategies for incorporating online components into student learning or staff
development,

The prerequisite for this class is Teaching and Learning Online Using Moodle and the opportunity to implement your
