DAY 1
Holy God

READ

Isaiah 6:1-3 Psalm 47 Exodus 15:11

Out of Our League

And they were calling to one another: Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory. Isaiah 6:3 Isaiah was a prophet in Israel who worked closely with King Uzziah, a good king who ruled Israel well, better than most kings in his time. But like all humans, Uzziah died and, with him, its possible that some of Isaiahs hopes for a better future died as well. Then Isaiah had an encounter with GodHe who is bigger than anything he could ever have imagined. God was seated on His throne. The king of Israel was dead, but God was still reigning. The angels flew around Him but they covered their faces because they couldnt look straight at Him. And the primary term they called God, three times for emphasis, was holy. Holy means separate and transcendentsomething totally above and beyond our situation. It means pure and set apart, something not polluted by anything ugly, evil, or imperfect. This is the God we worship. When we approach Him, let us remember Whom were praying to. We are not on the same level as Him. God is much bigger than the problems we face; He is never out of control. God is not small-minded, immature, selfish, jealous, or irresponsible like us. When we encounter Him, He leaves an impact on our lives that will not leave us the same. As we continue this devotional in preparation for Ignite, remember that we worship a Holy God.

REFLECT
Remember instances in your life when you unmistakably encountered God. What was the situation? What did God reveal to you then? What was the effect on your life? What is your view of God? When are the times that you forget how big He is? What are those things that often seem bigger and more important than God to you?

RESPOND
Repent for not giving God the worship He deserves as a Holy God. Ask for His forgiveness and His grace to be able to see Him as He is. Ask God to show you how big He is, just like He showed Isaiah. Take some time to worship God and pray in private, away from distractions.

DAY 2
Holy God

READ

Exodus 3:1-15 Psalm 15 2 Chronicles 7:13,14

Coming to Meet God

Do not come any closer, God said. Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground. 6Then he said, I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. At this, Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God. Exodus 3:5,6
5

At this point in his life, Moses had spent years living in isolation. He used to be the adopted son of the daughter of Pharaoh, but he had to run for his life after he killed another Egyptian in anger. God was going to send him back to challenge Pharaoh. But to convince him, God had to show Moses who the real power was. Moses saw a bush on fire but it wasnt burning up. Then God spoke to him from it. God told Moses to take off his sandals because the place he stood on was holy ground. Taking off ones sandals was a sign of respect and reverence. It means God did not want Moses to approach casually and frivolously. In the same way, if we are to encounter the holiness of God, we cannot be casual or irreverent about it. Yes, God is our Father and in Jesus He is our friend. But He is also holy and worthy of our worship. This is why were taking the time to humble ourselves before God and say He is the most important person to us. Even as we prepare for Ignite, where we hope to encounter God, we must remember this is not just an event or conference. We must be like Moses as we prepare ourselves for a powerful time with our holy God.

REFLECT
Are there times that you become relaxed, casual, or flippant with your relationship with God? Maybe its being overly familiar with worship songs, only reading your Bible to fulfill a requirement, not reading your Bible at all, or even hiding unconfessed sins. What causes this for you?

RESPOND
Repent if the Holy Spirit convicts you of any of the things above. Thank God for His forgiveness and grace to live differently. Confession is one of the most effective ways we can humble ourselves. Confess your insights with a trusted Christian friend.

DAY 3
Holy God

READ

Revelation 1:12-18 Luke 17:28-36 Revelation 19:11-16

The Posture of a Christian

When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. 18I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive forever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades. Revelation 1:17,18
17

The book of Revelation, the last book of the Bible, has been given some of the wackiest and most flawed interpretations in history. While it does have some unique images, its not impossible to understand. It is primarily a revelation of Jesus Christ as the Son of God and ruler of the world. In this passage, John has an encounter with Jesus. When Jesus walked on earth, He and John were close friends. But when John saw his Friend again, he saw who Jesus really wasbright, frightening, and powerful. This Jesus who was his Friend, now lives forever and controls life and death! John did the only thing he could dohe fell flat on his face at the feet of Jesus. Confronted by a Holy God, John could only fall down and worship. Thats what worship isa position of our heart when we see how great and holy our God is. When we worship God, whether its in singing songs or the way we live our lives, we are saying, God, You are great. You are awesome. You are holy. And this is the only possible response I can give. If we lack passion in our worship, we dont need a new style. What we need is a head-on collision with the Holy God.

REFLECT
How would you live everyday if you were absolutely certain that Jesus really is the ruler of the world? What would change about your day-to-day habits? How do you know Jesus today? Do you know Him the way John saw Him in these verses? Does this knowledge affect your life at all?

RESPOND
Take some time to worship God today. Get your favorite worship songs, find a quiet spot to pray, block off some time, and just worship Jesus, our Savior and the Lord of the universe. How do you worship God in how you live (in your studies, work, relationships, or role at home)? What can you do so that you can worship God in the ordinary daily things?

DAY 4
Holy life

READ

Isaiah 6:4-7 Psalm 130:3,4 Romans 3:23-26

Fall to Pieces
Woe to me! I cried. I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty. Isaiah 6:5 Isaiah saw the Holy God. It was an experience he could not deny. The first thing he realized was how sinful and unclean he was compared to God. Remember Isaiah was a prophet, so he was considered pretty good compared to other people around him. But compared to our Holy God, Isaiah knew he was as bad as everyone else. Isaiah said, I am ruined. This literally meant, I am falling apart. Isaiah knew every good thing he had ever done was falling to pieces and could not even reach the holiness of God. We might think that we are good compared to other people. But compared to God, we are all terrible sinners. Our actions might seem religious or noble, but our hearts are full of selfishness, pride, and lust. All of our good works are worthless and of no value. However, God did something for Isaiah. His guilt was taken away and his sin was paid for. Thats what Jesus did for us when He died on the cross. He took away our guilt and shame and received the consequences of our sins. Then He rose again and sent the Holy Spirit to live inside us and give us new life. When we put our faith in Jesus and what He did for us, the Holy Spirit gives us the strength to live a holy life.

REFLECT
Do you believe that Jesus has taken away your sins? Are there sins that you feel are stuck on you forever? Do you believe that the Holy Spirit gives you the power to live a holy life? Are you aware of your own sinfulness? More than the mental knowledge of it, are you convicted and wanting to change? Ask the Holy Spirit now to reveal to you sins that you might not have repented of.

RESPOND
Repent for your sins. Be specific and honest about them. Tell a trusted Christian friend or mentor and ask for prayer (James 5:16). Ask God for the grace to live a holy life. The next time you are faced with that temptation, remember that Jesus has already won the victory over sin.

DAY 5
Holy life

READ

Hebrews 12:1,2 James 1:13-15 1 John 1:8-2:2

No Extra Baggage
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Hebrews 12:1 In these verses, the author of Hebrews is describing a race like an Olympic event. He says that there is a race marked out for us. This is the holy life that God prepared for us when we believe in Jesus. Because we are running the race, he says to throw off everything that hinders and that sin that entangles. Sin has the tendency of entangling us and catching us in a trap. We like to think were in control. We think we can stop at any point. Other people may warn us, but we feel like we can still handle it until its too late. Sin will trap us while we are playing around with it. Thats why the author says to throw it away as quickly as possible. Instead of playing with sin, we should fix our eyes on Jesus. He died so we would be set free from sin. Sin doesnt have any power over us anymore. Jesus is the Author of our faithHe started it. But Jesus is also the perfecter of our faithHe will finish it. When sin begins to entangle us, we need to look to Jesus where we will get the strength to run this holy life God has for us.

REFLECT
Do you believe that Jesus will perfect your faith? Are there times that you feel like you will never change or that certain sins will stay with you forever? Are there little sins you are still playing with that distract you and have started to entangle you?

RESPOND
Its time to throw off anything that hinders and any sin that entangles you. Pray now and ask the Holy Spirit to show you what those things are and ask for the power to walk away from them. Pray now and say out loud that Jesus is the perfecter of your faith. There is no sin that will be stuck on you forever. Jesus has defeated every sin on the Cross. Make sure to pray with faith as your speak out loud.

DAY 6
Holy life

READ

Hebrews 12:5-11 Psalm 94:12,13 Proverbs 3:11,12

A Good Kind of Pain

Our fathers disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness. 11No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. Hebrews 12:10,11
10

Discipline. This is one of the most dreaded words a student can hear along with homework, suspension, and a surprise quiz. It reminds us of penalties and punishment. Maybe weve experienced being disciplined harshly or unfairly and this adds to our unpleasant view of the word. But this verse says that God disciplines us for a specific reason. He allows uncomfortable and painful circumstances in our lives so that we may share in His Holiness. This means God wants us to experience the beauty, purity, and excellence of being like Him. God does not discipline us because of our past mistakes alone. He uses discipline to remove unimportant things in our lives so He can replace them with His best for us. Maybe its the consequences of your actions that youre suffering. Maybe youre in a tight financial situation. Maybe your family is going through a very difficult season that has last for so long. Whatever the case, we know that God is disciplining us for our good. Dont take discipline lightly, but dont get discouraged either. When youre going through a painful time, remember God is disciplining you to prepare you for holiness.

REFLECT
When God disciplines you, do you often find it hard to see His purpose for it? Do you have the tendency to think that God is punishing you for the wrong that you have done instead of looking at it as Him preparing you for holiness? In what area do you think is God disciplining you right now? How are you responding to it?

RESPOND
Pray that God will reveal to you specific areas in your life where you need discipline in. Ask Him to grant you the grace to embrace His discipline and obey what He would ask you to dowhether it is giving up a certain habit or fasting from something that has been hindering you from spending quality time with Him. Talk to a trusted Christian friend and confess the wrong that you have done. Ask that person to continually be accountable with you as you allow Gods restoration to work in your life.

DAY 7
Holy life

READ

Psalm 51 2 Samuel 12 2 Corinthians 7:10,11

Repentance and Restoration

Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. 11Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. 12Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. Psalm 51:10-12
10

David, the king of Israel and the man after Gods own heart, had just committed one of the most infamous sins in the whole Bible. He committed adultery, then had the womans husband killed, and took her as his own wife. He thought he got away with it until the prophet Nathan confronted him. He told David that his sin would have very severe consequences. Davids response was to repent. Psalm 51 details what this repentance looked like. First, David acknowledged that he did wrong. He made no excuses. He didnt pass the blame to anyone else. He knew the problem was in his own heart. Secondly, he asked God to have mercy on him and to wash away his sins. And finally, he believed that God would restore him and fix the break in their relationship. We all fall into sin from time to time. You might even be in the middle of a sin issue right now. God uses His Word, His people, and situations in our lives to expose these things because He wants to restore His relationship with us. Maybe this devotional is your Nathan moment! When our sin is made plain to us, may we respond and repent like David did so we can also enjoy the restoration that he experienced.

REFLECT
What is your response when somebody confronts you? Do you shift the blame, make an excuse, or get angry? Are you in a sin issue right now? Have you been trying to justify or rationalize your actions?

RESPOND
Repent before God today. Ask for His forgiveness for the wrong that you have done (Psalm 51:4). Acknowledge the fact that when we do wrong, we have wronged Him first and foremost before we have wronged other people. Talk to a trusted Christian friend and confess the wrong that you have done. Ask that person to continually be accountable with you as you allow Gods restoration to work in your life.

DAY 8

READ

Isaiah 6:8 1 Peter 1:13-16 1 Corinthians 1:26-31

Holy calling

The Highest Commission

Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, Whom shall I send? And who will go for us? And I said, Here am I. Send me! Isaiah 6:8

Isaiah saw the Holy God. He was given power to live a holy life. Then God gave him a commission. God asked, Whom shall I send? And who will go for us? And immediately, Isaiahs response was to volunteer enthusiastically. God was willing to use this former sinner as His ambassador. Having an encounter with God doesnt just produce a holy life. He doesnt just clean up our mess and give us a new hope. All of these things serve to prepare us for His plan for our lives. He takes our sinful, imperfect lives, cleans them up, then uses them to glorify Himself and win others to Him. Some people use the word calling. This means, God is calling you to do something. It isnt something you imagined on your own or your church leaders or pastors are telling you to do. Its something you know the Holy God has put you on earth to do. All of us have different variations to this calling but it will all be connected to honoring God and making disciples. That is our holy calling.

REFLECT
Are you eager and willing to obey Gods call like Isaiah or do you delay your obedience, maybe hoping that someone else will do it? Are you living your life confident in knowing that God has put you on earth with a significant mission to accomplish? Do you feel that your life has a purpose and direction?

RESPOND
Take some time to pray today and ask God to help you know what He is calling you to do in this particular season of your life. If you can, talk to a trusted Christian friend who can help you and pray with you. If you already have a specific idea of something God is calling you to do, like praying for someone, inviting a friend to church, or entering a new responsibility, dont delay! Obey quickly.

DAY 9

READ

2 Timothy 1:5-14 Philippians 1:3-7 1 Corinthians 1:7-9

Holy calling

Strength to Last
And of this gospel I was appointed a herald and an apostle and a teacher. 12That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet I am not ashamed, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him for that day. 2 Timothy 1:11,12
11

Timothy was a young leader in the church. Paul had trained him from an early age and now he had a responsibility to lead other people. Paul was encouraging him to stand firm and not be ashamed of his faith. Maybe Timothy was intimidated by the new responsibilities or afraid because Paul was suffering for his life of faith. Paul reminded Timothy that God had called us to a holy life. This holy life was given by God to us, not because of what we did, but through the grace of God in Jesus. He also knew that with this calling would come challenges and sufferings. But Paul was able to overcome these trials because he knew that God would see him through till the end. Sometimes were like Timothy. We get intimidated when we hear Gods call to honor Him, disciple others, and live a holy life. But we can learn from the example of Paul and be confident. Not because we are so strong and we know everything, but because we know the One we believe in. He sends us His Holy Spirit to finish the job. He gives us this holy calling and He will provide everything we need to accomplish it.

REFLECT
Are you afraid of failure? Are you confident that the Holy Spirit is everything you need to do what God has called you to do? Do you ever feel ashamed or intimidated by the challenges you face? When are the times that you feel like Gods call is too difficult?

RESPOND
Thank God for the gift of the Holy Spirit. Ask the Holy Spirit to give you supernatural power, love, and a sound mind today (2 Timothy 1:7). Is there something you know God has called you to do (share to a friend, pray for someone, enter into a new area of responsibility) but youre too intimidated to do it? Today is a good time to just obey and let the Holy Spirit do His part.

DAY 10

READ

2 Timothy 2:20-22 2 Peter 1:3-10 1 Timothy 4:12-16

Holy calling

Flee and Pursue

Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. 2 Timothy 2:22 Paul tells Timothy to turn away from ignoble things. Ignoble means dishonorable, unworthy, and lowly. He told Timothy to get rid of these things so that he could be prepared for noble, honorable, and excellent work. This is why we get rid of foolish things around us. They keep us from being who God has called us to be. Maybe this is an addiction to video games, a tendency to gossip with friends or being argumentative or hot-tempered. Whatever these ignoble things are, they arent worth keeping! Like Timothy, God has a noble plan for your life as well. He wants us to accomplish great and worthwhile things. No one has a mediocre calling from God. All of us are meant to have a significant impact in the lives of many people around us. So we must run away from these ignoble things. And pursue the noble things of God along with people who also call on God. There are only two directions here: were either chasing evil, foolish wastes of time or the holy calling that God has for us.

REFLECT
Are you actively pursuing the things of God or are you more obsessed with things that have no impact in the long run? Think of your weekly activities and schedule. Do you find that a lot of your time and energy go toward worthless things? What are these things? Why are they so important to you?

RESPOND
Are there things in your life that you see youre spending too much time and energy on? Cut down on them, if not cut them off completely. Tell someone about your decision and ask them to check on you to make sure you follow through. What is one specific action step you can take to pursue the things of God more? Is it reading a Christian book, serving in a ministry, sharing with friends, starting a discipleship group, etc.? Share your decision with someone who can pray for you as you begin.
