1. What do you know about the art of Ancient Greece and Rome?

Ancient Greece and Rome were the source of many ideas that people believe in today, such as democracy, as well as art and drama, mathematics, philosophy of life... The Greek art can be divided into four groups: the Geometric Period (vase painting, usually used as grave markers, painted history of a family member on a vase), The Archaic Period (vase painting, but more detailed, black colour is used, bronze sculptures), The Classical Period (the Golden Age, red colour instead of black is used in vase painting, more detailed bronze sculptures, The Parthenon of Athens (a temple dedicated to the goddess Athena) is one of the major architectural works of the Classical period. It and other temples usually contain sculptures of mythological subjects) and the Hellenistic Period (begin with the conquests of Alexander the Great, around 330 B.C., during which time Greek art and culture spread to other lands, the sculptures of Hellenistic times tend to be much more active and intense, often in groups engaged in violent activity. One of the best examples of this style is the sculptural decorations of the Great Altar of Zeus at Pergamum. The first image shows the goddess Athena gripping a rebellious Giant by the hair; the second shows a close-up of Artemis' dog biting another giant.). The Roman art is usually a copy of the Greek art, to be more precise, Roman art possesses many similar works from Hellenistic Period from Ancient Greece. It is very difficult to distinguish between Hellenistic works, Roman copies of Greek works, and Roman originals. Many of the most important artworks from Roman times are those which have been discovered in or near the famous buried city of Pompeii. 2. What do you know about the art of the Renaissance? Renaissance art is the painting, sculpture and decorative arts of that period of European history known as the Renaissance, emerging as a distinct style in Italy in about 1400, in parallel with developments which occurred in philosophy, literature, music and science. Renaissance art, perceived as a "rebirth" of ancient traditions, took as its foundation the art of Classical antiquity, but transformed that tradition by the absorption of recent developments in the art of Northern Europe and by application of contemporary scientific knowledge. Renaissance art, with Renaissance Humanist philosophy, spread throughout Europe, affecting both artists and their patrons with the development of new techniques and new artistic sensibilities. Renaissance art marks the transition of Europe from the medieval period to the Early modern age. In many parts of Europe, Early Renaissance art was created in parallel with Late Medieval art. By 1500 the Renaissance style prevailed. As Late Renaissance art (Mannerism) developed, it took on different and distinctive characteristics in every region.

3. What is the most important event of the 20th century? Explain. The Internet contains an infinite number of high-quality, interesting, intriguing, and welldesigned sites, and surfing on the Web is usually a source of enjoyment and acquisition of knowledge. However, Internet content is totally uncensored. Because of this, children surfing the Web can be exposed to sexual, malicious, racist and violent content in e-mail messages, chats and forums. While surfing the Internet, children make friends and meet new people, and sometimes they are tempted to meet them outside the virtual space. Meetings of this kind could endanger childs safety. Sites, commercial organizations try to extract personal information from children surfing the Web name, age, address, telephone number, and the schools they attend. One of the major disadvantages of the Internet is the lack of supervision of the content. For this reason, it is possible to find various types of information on the Web, from encouragement of illegal drug use through alcohol use, and up to information about preparing explosives. Also, there are many gambling sites on the Internet, and anyone with a credit card at his disposal can enter and gamble. We should be aware that it is illegal for minors to gamble, and when we check our credit card payments each month make sure that no unusual payments have been made. 4. Discuss three most burning issues in the 21st century. With the immediate looming problems of climate change and energy, focus has shifted away from landfill waste, but this is a serious problem. The world has largely gotten accustomed to a throwaway lifestyle, but thats neither healthy nor sustainable. Also, waterways are choked with trash and modernized nations ship their undesirable leftovers to the developing world. Fashion, fast food, packaging and cheap electronics are just some of the problems. The amount of waste the industrialized world generates is shocking. Water bottles are the defining symbol of this critical issue. Fortunately, people are becoming aware of the consequences of fast consumption and there are many simple changes we can make in our own life to help significantly reduce landfill waste- one of the useful methods is to recycle. 5. Which three decisions have the greatest long-term effects on our lives? Discuss. CHOOSING A CAREER- even from a worldly viewpoint, our choice is important because the job market is always changing and the wrong choice could lead to financial ruin or fiscal hardship. More importantly, the choice can have a lasting effect on: our marriage and family and also our inner self-satisfaction. CHOOSING A MATE- this choice will determine to a great extent your degree of happiness, It will have a permanent bearing on our children and their emotional well-being. You may think you can simply divorce a person if they turn out to be a bad choice but once you have children, it is not an easy decision because children are not unaffected by the violence of divorce, so you have to be wise in choosing a partner. CHOOSING YOUR FRIENDS- having close and honest and true friends can be a wonderful blessing and they can really help you through your life. But the wrong friends can be a curse, so be smart when it comes to choosing a right friend.

6. Do you enjoy crime stories in books and films? What are the elements of a good crime story? Explain. Crime stories such as Hercule Poirots or Sherlock Holmes stories have always been read by lots of people and certainly count as the most popular and classic crime stories. These stories are read by people of all kind, from child to grandmother, and I think you can call them timeless, since they are still read today, a long time after they were written. 1. Must a good crime story have some sexual elements? Todays crime stories certainly contain some kind of sex. If you look at crime stories at TV you just expect to see some love affairs, usually between the detective and a woman, who is either helping him to solve the problem or who is directly involved in the crime. 2. Must a good crime story be authentic/realistic? I think a good crime story does not need to be realistic, it only has to be authentic. A good example is J.K. Rowlings Harry Potter. He is a wizard, attending a school of witch craft, with a flying broom, a magic wand, an invisible cloak, etc., which are certainly invented things. Although this story is as unrealistic as one could imagine, it is loved by millions of people, because Rowling created a whole world of wizards and witches in such a good, detailed and conclusive way that the reader gets the impression this world does really exist. 3. How important is violence? I think violence is a similar theme as sex. A lot of people think a good crime story must necessarily contain violence or action to be interesting. Usually there is a wild pursuit, gunfight or something else, so that the reader or viewer will not be bored. But a really good crime story does not need frightening elements to entertain. 4. Must the detective be male? In all the crime stories we read in class we could find male detectives. The only female "detective" I know, is Agatha Christies Ms. Marple, who was by the way as successful as Poirot, maybe even more successful. I think it is just based on the historical role of women that we find more male detectives than females, but it is not a precondition for a good crime story. Concluding I would like to say that the most important element of a good crime story is a really good idea. The whole story must be authentic in every single detail. It is not important, whether it portrays middle class or high society, a male or female detective, is unrealistic or realistic, but it needs to be authentic, and well described with a surprising end. 7. If you arent doing anything wrong, theres no reason to object to being checked up on. Do you agree with this statement? Yes, I agree with this statement. If you are innocent, there is nothing wrong to let someone check up on you. If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to be afraid of. You should be safe and calm and believe in your innocence. If you do things rightly, you dont have to afraid. If someone wants to check up on you, he/she can do it freely, because they cannot find anything. It is impossible to find something, isnt it? Or you are afraid that if they dig deep of your past they can find something interesting or dangerous? Well, it is up to you, some persons commit crimes without even remorse later on, or feel repentance, and they pretend like nothing happened. If you are a moral person, you wont commit any crimes, but if you do, you should report to police and do your job according to law.

8. Mahatma Gandhi said Earth provides enough to satisfy every mans need, but not every mans greed. Is our society immersed in consumerism? There are many environmental problems in the world today. The air, rivers and seas are all polluted, especially in over-populated and heavily industrialized regions. People dont care anymore and poor waste disposal is the cause of much of this pollution. Also, overfishing has depleted the numbers of fish in the oceans. Then, we are witnessing the destruction of the ozone layer and it is leading to climatic changes and what is known as the greenhouse effect. The greenhouse effect is the gradual rise in temperature of the earths atmosphere caused by an increase of gases such as carbon dioxide in the air surrounding the earth, which trap the heat of the sun. Then, we are facing with massively deforestation which is the act of cutting down or burning the trees in an area. The destruction of the rainforests is causing widespread ecological problems. There is also a term called battery farming and it provides large amounts of food but it involves keeping animals in crowded and unnatural conditions which could be defined as torturing and inhumane way of behaving. 9. What makes good art? Explain and give examples. Good art is made when the artwork evokes feeling and thought. It makes the viewer feel something, even if that feeling is only comfort in the recognition of something personally familiar to that viewer. So all an artist has to do is create a painting of a spring flowers right? Not exactly, this is because the feeling alone is sometimes not enough, it also should make a person think. It should be interesting, in some way other than just a picture of an object or objects. Maybe it makes them think in ways that do not really have words, like just taking in colors and shapes. The good art will use the shapes and colors to evoke an emotion that the viewer will understand and interpret as if they where words. So let go back to the example of the painting of the spring flower which now may evoke comfort in the viewer because he or she may recognize and remember the soft beauty of spring because the artist made the painting interesting through techniques of composition, color and application of the medium which added elements that evokes thought that is deeper than the flower itself. A good example would be Vincent van Gogh Sunflowers painting where looking at the original textures are breathtaking. Art does not have to be exciting or evoke strong feelings or thoughts, just some feelings and thoughts. If the person who makes the art does not at least try to do this, they are not an artist. A person who just knows how to apply a medium to a surface or take great photos only has created a picture with great technique. But what makes the person an artist is figuring out how to put the whole composition together so that the piece evokes feelings and thoughts which add meaning to that artwork and give it a relationship to its viewers.

10. Who should be responsible for protecting our resources- government or the individual? Give at least 5 ideas for saving energy. 1. Turn your thermostat down. Reducing your room temperature by 1C could cut your heating bills by up to 10 percent and typically saves around 60 per year. If you have a programmer, set your heating and hot water to come on only when required rather than all the time. 2. Don't leave appliances on standby and remember not to leave laptops and mobile phones on charge unnecessarily. Always turn off the lights when you leave a room. 3. Use energy saving lightbulbs. They last up to 10 times longer than ordinary bulbs, and using one can save you around 55 over the lifetime of the bulb. This saving could be around 120 over its lifetime if you're replacing a high wattage incandescent bulb, or one used for more than a few hours a day. 4. If possible, fill up the washing machine, tumble dryer or dishwasher: one full load uses less energy than two half loads. 5. A dripping hot water tap wastes energy and in one week wastes enough hot water to fill half a bath, so fix leaking taps and make sure they're fully turned off! 11. What exactly is the poison that the title of Roald Dahls story refers to? -retell the story briefly, talk about Harry, Timber and dr Ganderbai. The story offers a nice portrait of a physician's house call including images of the doctor's bag, hypodermic syringe, and meticulous attention to the preparation and administration of an intravenous injection. Conclude. What exactly is the "poison" that the title refers to? Some possibilities include the venom of the krait, fear, and racism. When it comes to dangerous creatures, this tale suggests that human beings can be the most venomous species of life on earth. 12. Find at least three things that Mr. Kelada did that annoyed the narrator. Which of those could be considered cultural difference, and which were just a part of his personality that clashed with that of the narrators? Importunity, cocksureness, his luggage o.O cultural difference- Kelada was Black. 12. What is the theme of the story The Luncheon? The primary theme of the short story 'Luncheon' by Somerset Maugham is appearance vs. reality. The speaker, in 'Luncheon', wishes from the beginning that his date would be a beautiful woman. He imagines a portrayal of a graceful lady in his mind. But, when he goes to have a lunch with her, she appears as a surprising blast, a total opposite to his imagination. Not only her appearance but also her dialogues express that she is an extremely fat, food-loving and ravenous woman who does not even think a bit about the costs the speaker would have to pay for the lunch. She has a very good appetite, and gobbles a lot of money also. The most

interesting part is the verbal irony hidden in the lines she utters to the speaker, like she does not eat too much etc. The irony concealed in her speeches helps to develop the main theme. These ironies make 'Luncheon' a comic story in the true sense. 14. Do you think that Edward Bernard made the right choice or is Bateman right in thinking that he is wasting his life? Explain. Edward Bernard made the right choice, Bateman sucks. THE END :p
