George W. Bush 9/11 speech 1.

I found this speech on American Rhetoric, a website that holds the 100 greatest speeches of all time; I believe it is a good site because its main purpose is to provide the best speeches possible. Therefore Bushs speech must be pretty good. 2. The topic of the speech is to discuss the terrorist attacks on 9/11. 3. The thesis is to rally the U.S citizens, unify the public, and encourage people to stay strong. 4. The first point that Bush made was that the terrorists have failed. Our country is strong. The second statement that Bush made was, Our military is powerful, and its prepared. Our emergency teams are working in NYC and Washington D.C. to get help to those who have been injured, and to take every precaution to protect our citizens at home and around the world from further attacks. Another comment that Bush made was, our financial institutions remain strong, and the American economy will be open for business as well. These points were made to promote strength within our country. 5. The targeted audience is the American population. President Bush was giving a speech to the general public in response to a disaster. 6. The subtext in this piece is that we will get revenge on anyone who threatens the safety of our nation. Bush says, we will make no distinction between the terrorists who committed these acts and those who harbor them. Purpose/ rhetoric aim 1. The objective in this speech is to reflect and persuade. President Bush is reflecting on the terrorists acts and trying to persuade the American population to maintain strong through the horrific acts. 2. One sentence that suggest the purpose of the piece is, we will make no distinction between the terrorists who committed these acts and those who harbor them. Another sentence is, our country is strong. These sentences highlight the purpose of the speech, which is that our country will stay strong, and serve justice to who did. He uses powerful, convincing language. 3. The tone of this speech is very serious. It is an extremely serious matter and the tone adds a sense of urgency to the speech. 4. President Bush explains how our economy is still open for business. He also mentions that terrorists cannot bring us down because we have a strong military and a large group of Americans that care for their country. These comments are appropriate because they play on the audiences sense of patriotism. 5. This speech is important because it was at a time of desperation. As the president of the United States it was his job to create a sense of comfort and ease in the minds of all the American citizens. Rhetoric appeals

1. Throughout the speech Bush plays on the audiences emotions many times, Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil for you are with me. With this quote from the bible Bush was playing on the audiences will and belief in America. 2. Emotional appeals in this speech are extremely effective because our nation was in a time of panic and everyones emotions were very delegate. 3. President Bush appeals to his own credibility when he says, I appreciate so very much the members of Congress who have joined me in strongly condemning these attacks. He is saying that Congress is completely behind him and he is the most powerful man in the world. 4. I believe the appeals to credibility have a small impact in this speech but not nearly as big as the appeals to emotion. 5. Bush appeals to logical when he explains that the Congress is behind his decisions. Also that we will do everything in our power to find who did this act of terrorism. 6. The logical appeals are somewhat affective but do not have a huge impact on the speech. Logical fallacies 1. One logical fallacy that Bush uses is genetic fallacy when he says America was targeted for attack because were the greatest beacon for freedom and opportunity in the world. Another logical fallacy in this speech is slippery slope. Bush says that if we do not serve justice to the people that committed this act it will just continue to happen. 2. Explained above. 3. Logical fallacies weaken the argument because they decrease the validity of the speech as a whole. Broader implications The outcome of this speech was a greater effort to protect us from terrorist attacks and also how to respond to a terrorist attack.
