GX3000/GX3050N/GX5050N
INTRODUCTION
A Growing Family
2005 saw Savin create a new segment in the color printer market: duplex-capable, business quality printers featuring GelSprinter technology. Savin believed there was an untapped market waiting for the proper mix of technology, speed, quality, and price to come together to offer affordable, high-speed, high quality printing on plain paper for entry-level business color customers. We were right, and the validation came not only from sales figures and the emergence of several GelSprinter-receptive vertical markets, but in the form of awards.

GelSprinter models received a Highly Recommended rating from BERTL, while others captured Outstanding Achievement Awards from BLI and Editors Choice from PC Magazine. In fact, Ricoh Corporation as a whole was presented with an Outstanding Achievement Award from BLI, as well as a 2006 BERTLs Best Winner for the development of this innovative technology. Traditional inkjet technology had previously been limited to small office/home office (SOHO) and mainly personal photo printing applications, the advent of Savins GelSprinter technology opened the door to affordable color printing to corporate office/home office (COHO) environments, as well as small offices and home-based businesses that need more than typical inkjet printers can provide. GelSprinter models are excellent alternatives for customers that cannot justify the acquisition of a color laser printer solution, much less a full-blown color-enabled MFP. GelSprinters are also perfect solutions for remote branch or satellite office locations that require speed and quality for light local printing needs at little cost. Further, they have found homes in growing businesses that need a second or third printer to increase color capacity at minimal expense, as well as in C-level executive offices requiring business quality color output in a non-networked configuration. Budget-squeezed schools have found GelSprinters to be attractive substitutes to laser printers in PC-based computer labs and classrooms due to their low acquisition price and cost-per-page (CPP) factors. The bottom line is that GelSprinter printers deliver laser-like printing performance with acceptable quality for hundreds if not thousands of dollars less than their speedequivalent color laser counterparts.

The Next Phase: Meet the new Savin GX3000, GX3050N, and GX5050N
In 2006 we find ourselves ready for Phase 2: Growth. The objectives now are to launch faster printers (and eventually MFP solutions) utilizing Savins innovative GelSprinter technology foundation, and to broaden the scope of product availability to include all Savin Family Group distribution channels. Meet the new Savin GX3000, GX3050N, and GX5050N. Three new 8.5 x 14 GelSprinter models give you greater flexibility in a growing product family. Faster, more powerful, and packed with a number of enhancements that eliminate the shortcomings of their predecessors, the GX3000/3050N/GX5050N still deliver what business users want most:

Affordability. The GX3000/3050N/5050N break new ground with respect to affordability. In addition to being extremely aggressively priced on hardware side, these printers go even further to make color printing affordable by reducing color cost-per-page factors. Fast output speeds. The GX3000/3050N print pages at speeds up to 29-ppm; the GX5050N prints as fast as 30-ppm (speed can be affected by the type of document and selected print mode) to keep up with true business environments. Access to Duplexing. Two-sided printing capabilities are now standard on every new GelSprinter model. The GX3000/3050N/5050N all support standard efficient duplexing at speeds up to 75% of simplex print speeds thanks to their fast-drying Viscous Inks. Duplexing using traditional inkjet technology is difficult if not impossible, and produces poor results. High image quality on plain paper. The GX3000/3050N/5050N print crisp text and sharp images onto plain paper with a default 600 x 300 dpi resolution that is acceptable for all business applications, and a maximum of 3600 x 1200 dpi equivalent with image enhancement technology for documents requiring the utmost quality. Expandable, refillable paper supplies. The GX3000/3050N feature paper supplies with maximum capacities up to 350 sheets (including the optional Multi-Bypass Tray), and up to 850 sheets (including the optional Multi-Bypass Tray and 500-sheet Paper Feed Unit) for the GX5050N to support long jobs and/or multi-set production with minimal user intervention. Support for high monthly volumes. The GX3000/3050N/5050N are built on a solid technology foundation designed for maximum durability. As a result, these printers feature high maximum monthly duty cycles (up to 10,000 prints for GX3000/3050N, and up to 20,000 prints for GX5050N), and recommended monthly print volumes (up to 2,500 3,000 prints) that are many times that of typical inkjet devices to better meet true business environment demands.
3

Simplified connectivity. The GX3050N/5050N provide plug-and-play installation with support for both local (USB 2.0) and networked (10/100BaseT Ethernet) connectivity for shared use. The GX3000 supports USB 2.0 standard with optional network capability. These printers may also be connected with @Remote and unlike traditional inkjet printers, can be monitored via the network.

The new GX3000/3050N/5050N build on this solid start by adding these critical performance enhancements:

Embedded Network Interface. The GX3050N and GX5050N provide a standard built-in network interface. Customers can add this internal connectivity solution as an option to the GX3000 as well. Expanded PDL Support. The network-enabled GX3050N and GX5050N will support PCL5c and PCL6 in addition to RPCS to open the doors to wider placement opportunities. Faster Speeds. The new GX3000 and GX3050N boost output speed to 29-ppm for both full-color and black-and-white pages; the GX5050N prints all pages as fast as 30-ppm. All first print times for these printers are 9 seconds or less, also faster than their predecessors. Larger, more flexible media capacity. Higher sheet capacities up to 850 sheets with thicker stock acceptance up to 140 lb. Index enable the new GX3000/3050N/5050N to handle a wider range of applicationslike postcard, menu, and business card printingwith fewer interruptions for paper reloading. 600 x 300 dpi default resolution. A higher default resolution provides excellent image quality for every job without requiring users to change driver settings, improving productivity. Improved photo printing performance. The new GX3000/3050N/5050N address high image saturation color photo printing by making improvements to the Viscous Inks and the recommended glossy media for printing photographs.

GX3000/GX3050N/GX5050N

Improved supply yields with better status monitoring. The new GX3000/3050N/5050N offer higher print cartridge supply yields for both regular and high yield cartridges. This in turn drives GelSprinter cost-per-page (CPP) factors to their lowest levels yet. Further, the print cartridge status monitor on now reports in five increments; 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% for better utilization of supplies. Networked users can also use Savins new @Remote utility to monitor ink status of any printer on the network. Higher maximum and monthly duty cycles. Due to several GelSprinter core technologies performing beyond initial expectations (wide print heads, belt feeding system), Savin has adjusted the maximum duty cycles and average monthly volumes to better reflect engine performancein some cases up to 200% (See Whats New & Different? for specification details).

All of these enhancements come together to refine an already exciting technology and open more sales opportunities for you. Well talk much more about how these next-generation GelSprinter models make color duplex printing more affordable than ever throughout this Guide.

Award-winning Technology Foundation

While these new enhancements take Savin GelSprinter technology to the next level, lets not forget that the new GX3000/3050N/5050N retain many of the qualities that made the technology an awardwinning solution. Fast drying Viscous Inks that enable high-speed, high-quality, plain paper duplexing in an inkjet printer for the first time. Extra-wide printheads that never need replacing with more durable nozzles for greater performance and image quality. A Belt Transfer System that holds paper firmly in place for improved registration at faster speeds. Multi-Dot Technology to adjust ink droplet size for superior image quality. A Level Color Mode that provides full-color images for about the same cost as black-and-white. Expandable paper supplies and versatile media acceptance more akin to laser printers than inkjet devices. Output speed, resolutions, and image quality equivalent to laser at an inkjet price. Compact design that delivers exceptional printing power in a desktop solution. Although heavy and larger than some traditional inkjet printers, the new GX3000/3050N/5050N are considerably lighter and more portable than their laser counterparts, delivering comparable speed and quality for thousands less. Well discuss all of these aspects and the advantages they provide to prospects throughout the balance of this Guide.

The Business Inkjet Opportunity

Industry analysts call the category that best describes hybrid solutions like the GX3000/3050N/5050N Business Inkjet. These devices combine the best characteristics of laser print engines and inkjet technology to enable high speed, high quality duplex printing suitable for office applications. Savin is not the only manufacturer to recognize the potential of this class of device. Canon and Hewlett Packard are two big names that also offer Business Inkjet printers, and you can expect more players to jump on the bandwagon.

GX3000/GX3050N/GX5050N

But is Business Inkjet worth it? Will there be enough demand to sustain a profitable market over the long term? Savin thinks so, and industry analyst IDC agrees, as both U.S. Inkjet and Color Laser Printer sales are expected to account for millions of units through 2009 forecasts. Currently, there are not forecasts specifically for Business Inkjet; the category is simply too new. But if we examine the growth on both sides, the future looks bright for devices that combine the best of the laser and inkjet worlds. How many of the 11,000,000 inkjet printers estimated to be sold in the U.S. this year can you convert to GX3000/3050N/5050N sales for a few incremental dollars? How many of the 800,000+ color laser printers expected to be sold in the U.S. this year can you transform into GX3000/3050N/5050N placements while saving the customer hundreds of dollars? Grab a few incremental sales from each side of the Business Inkjet family tree and you will grow your overall Savin account base with an upside for growth that cannot be beat!

Product/Launch Objectives
As Savin continues to build upon the success of the first generation GelSprinter products, the primary objective of the new GX3000/3050N/5050N is to allow the Savin Family Group to grow a new generation of color printer customer. With initial test marketing complete, the GX3000/3050N/5050N will be available to all RFG distribution channels with the dual aim of increasing visibility for the new GelSprinter brand, and becoming a total solution provider from entry-level color printers to full-blown production MFP solutions. With the exciting GelSprinter models in your portfolio, youll be able to answer any color output need of any customer at any price. The GX3000/3050N/5050N are also designed to:

Capture new revenues for Savin and your dealership through the sales of supplies for a growing product family. Introduce customers to the Savin brand at an earlier stage of the business lifecycle but introducing color-enabled products at a lower price and volume threshold. Entice users to print more pages in color through even lower color CPP factors. Build color printer market share at the expense of the competitors such as Dell, HP , Xerox, Konica Minolta, and others. Expand the universe of viable GelSprinter customers by making PCL and embedded network connectivity available with the GX3050N/5050N. Provide affordable, duplex-enabled color solutions to small business users requiring duplex color at low cost (COHO).

Clearly, at these price points and CPP factors, your GelSprinter models will provide a compelling alternative to more expensive monochrome and color laser printers. The specific model and configuration you recommend will depend primarily on customer volumes, the number of users and requirements for heavier stock acceptance. Be sure to ask the proper questions to uncover this information. In each case, lead with your flagship in the base configuration, still affordably priced at $369 (SRP). You can always trade down to the $279 (SRP) GX3050N and only sacrifice 1-ppm in speed. For single user placements, the non-networked GX3000 provides the best value.

Each model in the family uses the same main unit controller and supports the same maximum paper size and standard paper capacities. Generally, each is designed to support the basic full-color and monochrome printing needs of small businesses. However, there are several critical differences between the models, especially between the GX3000/GX3050N and the GX5050N. These distinctions will help you make the best product recommendation, as outlined on the next page:

Monthly Volume: 750 2,500 pages SRP: $279

The price/value leader in the GelSprinter family, the GX3000 is the non-networked version best suited for single-user, small business environments requiring access to affordable color printing with fast speed and duplexing. The GX3000 can be configured with the optional network interface card for shared use, however, adding this option does not enable PCL printing, as that functionality is built into the main unit controller, and is not contingent on the NIC. Therefore, be sure the customers printing applications can be satisfied by RPCS support.

The flagship of 8.5 x 14 GelSprinter models, the 30-ppm GX5050N features all the networked functionality of the GX3050N and similar RAM to support the increased resolution and speed of this unit as a function of its four print heads. As a result of these increased capacities and capabilities, the GX5050N is best suited for higher volume multi-user environments in small workgroups and businesses requiring access to high quality, duplexed documents.

13

Why the difference between resolutions at virtually the same speed? In the inkjet world, speed is a function of lines per minute, not pages per minute. To achieve their fast speeds, GelSprinter models employ extra-wide, Piezo heads with a sufficient number of nozzles to create 150 dpi per line. There are two rows of nozzles (to create two lines at once) on each print head. The GX3000 and GX3050N each use two print heads to create four lines per pass at 150 dpi. Conversely, the more robust GX5050N uses a scaled-up version of the same technology that allows this printer to hold four print heads, not two. Rather than doubling the speed, this technology instead trains two lines of ink nozzles on the same line position to double the number of ink dots used to create a line. The physical position of the nozzles on each lines are slightly offset, resulting in true 300 x 300 dpi resolution at about the same output speed. The GX5050N requires additional RAM to support printing at this speed and resolution, again because inkjet printers print by the line, not by the page. So more memory is needed to supply the data that informs eight lines of nozzles to fire simultaneously instead of four. To support this, the GX5050N ships with 16MB RAM as part of its standard configuration. (See Core Technologies & Utilities for more information and illustrations.)

Whats New & Different?

Target Users and Their Applications

Every customer environment is different, and their priorities will naturally change from account to account, depending upon their applications and where they are in the business lifecycle. Your investigation into specific customer workflow and applications will narrow your scope toward the proper class of technology (inkjet or laser), and the level of solution (printer-only or MFP) to meet their needs and budget. Usually, established or expanding businesses in a growth phase will be stepping up in technology; either adding more devices to keep pace with employee growth, the number of locations, or to handle additional volumes. Growth means success, which means those business may have larger budgets and tend to grow with laser technology, although some opportunity for GelSprinter success is certainly there. Mature environments such as corporations typically begin to consolidate and standardize support technologies with more robust MFPs in an effort to reduce costs and streamline service and supply needs. Your primary opportunity for Savin GelSprinter success lies in the lower left quadrant of the Technology Solution Matrix, where small businesses and SOHOs that are just getting started and are seeking to position themselves as viable alternatives to larger competitors. They need affordable, duplex-capable color solutions, but have budget constraints not suffered by their larger counterparts. GelSprinter models are the perfect solution for entry-level customers that need color at an affordable price.

18

GX3000/GX3050N/GX5050N

The GX3050N/5050N are ideal solutions for a small business owner with limited space and budget, a small corporate workgroup for shared use; consider the GX3000 for C-level executives who require nonnetworked printers for private use. With low acquisition and running costs, every GelSprinter model is a perfect solution for classroom/computer lab printing, and storefront needs such as retail signage, restaurant menus/specials, real estate property flyers, doctor offices, and local branch/satellite office printing in banks, financial services, retail chains, and insurance agencies. For any and all of these targets, you can tweak the positioning of the GX3000/3050N/5050N to elevate existing printing capabilities and help your customer choose the right solution regardless of where they may fall in the Technology Solution Matrix. If the customer already has Position your GelSprinter printer as

No color printing capabilities at all

A less expensive alternative to color laser printer technology with low cost-per-page factors, and a Level Color mode for color pages with a similar CPP to black-and-white. A faster, higher quality alternative to traditional inkjet printers with support for duplexing, thicker stocks, and larger media capacities than typical inkjet printers. An enhancement to existing monochrome printing capabilities at little or no incremental cost, with quality and performance approaching that of laser, with access to color printing in the same device. An upgrade to existing technology through faster speeds, greater paper supplies, duplexing, and low CPP . Integrated networking will allow multiple users to hare the printer. A duplex-capable color printer with faster speeds and compact size, available on the network for all users to share. A non-networked personal printer for confidential documents, or as a convenience printer for local output in the executive suite.

Black-and-white laser printers

Low-end color inkjet printers Low-end color laser printers Connected color laser or MFP technology

Remember; do not complicate the GelSprinter Value Proposition. The GX3000/3050N/5050N are color printers, nothing more, nothing less. They cannot scan, copy, fax, or send data to other networked destinations. They are for customers that want to:

Print affordable color with access to duplexing when needed. Replace monochrome-only solutions to add color printing capabilities at minimal incremental cost. Install easy to use, easy to maintain printing technology with image quality sufficient for business applications. Upgrade from slower, more expensive early color laser printing technology. Trade up from personal inkjet printers that have been stretched beyond capacity.

19

And since the vast majority of these customers are using Windows-based PCs to create documents with Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel), the GX3000/3050N/5050N are focused on those environments. As such, these printers are only compatible with Windows operating systems, and use either Savins Refined Print Command Stream (RPCS) or HP PCL 5c/6 page description languages and drivers. There is no support for Macintosh or UNIX environments, no PostScript driver. This should help to narrow your focus as well. Emerging Vertical Markets Savins GelSprinter technology has been available for one year in North America, and slightly longer in Japan and other overseas markets. Although still positioned as a business color printer for general office needs, during this time several vertical markets have embraced GelSprinter technology for its simplicity, affordability, and image quality. These customers appreciate the printers fast output speeds, low power consumption, small footprint, waterproof ink feature, and of course, their affordability. GelSprinter Success Story:

Fast Food Company M Switches to GelSprinter for Affordable Color Training, scheduling, and keeping staff on task is tougher than you think in the fast food business. High turnover, language barriers, an ever-changing menu, and the need for speed challenge fast food restaurants on a daily basis. In Japan, several franchise locations of industry giant Company M replaced their black-and-white laser printers with GelSprinter models to improve staff communication. Colorful pictures of sandwich ingredients and assembly steps, colorized training manuals, and easy to read staff schedules eliminated mistakes by incorporating affordable color through use of the Level Color Mode. This overcame the owner's objection of the high cost of color in laser devices, and won the deal for Savin!

Long life cartridges minimize maintenance, replacement tasks and reduce overall costs. Separate cartridges allow for individual print cartridge replacement as needed. Revolutionary viscous inks produce sharp text, vibrant colors, and are fast drying and waterproof to prevent smudging and allow for duplexing. Increased yields per color over previous models for even less maintenance.

Print Heads

Physically places droplets of ink on media. 1.27 design places a wider swath of ink on the page with each pass. 2 heads are built into the GX3000 and GX3050N. 4 heads are used in the GX5050N.

Permanent print heads are not replaced each time a cartridge is depleted, reducing running costs. Wide print head design enables faster speeds for improved printing productivity. Employs M-Dot technology to adjust ink droplet size to achieve superior image quality. Print heads can store a small amount of ink at the print head to complete up to 50 additional pages while cartridges are replaced.

Belt Feeding System

Moves media through the printer paper path.

Electrostatic belt system duplexes quickly, reduces paper jams, and provides more accurate prints by securely holding paper in position for sharp prints with accurate registration.

2 sets of duplex rollers ensure proper page alignment for two-sided printing. Placement at rear of machine minimizes paper path and footprint. See Core Technologies for more details on viscous inks, print head design, and belt feeding technology.

CORE TECHNOLOGIES & UTILITIES

Sometimes its not knowing what your solution does, but how it does it that is critical. In the GelSprinter product family, Savin has developed several award-winning technologies that deliver superior results over competitive inkjet and color laser printers. Understanding the whys and hows of system operation will help you develop needs for capabilities that are the best match for the products strengths given your customers applications. So lets take a look under the hood and review several core technologies and next generation enhancements that make the GX3000/3050N/5050N featuring Savins GelSprinter technology a viable solution for small businesses and workgroups to meet their color and black-and-white document production needs. Well start with the three technologies that really provide separation from all other competitive inkjet solutions: Viscous Inks, Wide Print Heads, and the Belt Feeding System. These form the basic GelSprinter value proposition to the customer: high quality fullcolor printing on plain paper up to 8.5 x 14, surprisingly fast output speeds, and duplexing with an extraordinarily low total cost of ownership. Well also point out several GelSprinter technology enhancements made to the GX3000/3050N/5050N that truly make these new GelSprinters leading-edge solutions for mixed color and black-and-white printing needs.

For purposes of this discussion all technologies apply equally to the GX3000/3050N and GX5050N, except where noted.

28

GX3000/GX3050N/GX5050N

Viscous Inks
Viscosity refers to the thickness of a liquid. Most inkjet printers use low viscosity ink so it can flow freely through microscopic print bubble jet nozzles with minimal pressure and clogging. Two types of low viscosity inks are Dye-based and Pigment-based.

Dye-based inks are found in Canon and HP inkjet printers. They soak into the paper, spread, and dry slowly. This can result in a dull image, wet and wrinkled paper from ink saturation, and bleed-through that makes duplexing difficult if not impossible. Pigment-based inks such as those used by Epson dry faster than dye-based inks, but are still not fast enough to support reliable image quality for two-sided pages. Pigmentbased inks are more water resistant than dye-based inks, but the ink sits on top of the paper and smears easily when rubbed or covered with a highlighter. Savins new Viscous inks are thicker, gelatin-like pigment-based inks that actually start to dry upon contact with the air. This limits spreading of the dot, and prevents bleed-through. As a result, GelSprinter models are capable of delivering high resolution two-sided prints at fast speeds on plain paper. The viscous ink dries so fast it does not smear when the duplex rollers invert pages for second-side printing. Please note that when duplexing, the printers automatically reduce image density slightly to further guard against ink over-saturation. The colorant for each ink is actually a fine powder, and once the carrier gel evaporates, it leaves the color pigment embedded between the paper fibers. As such, Savins Viscous inks resist smudging, will not dissolve upon accidental contact with water, and resist fading when exposed to sunlight for extended periods of time. These properties make GelSprinter printers excellent solutions for printing menus, coupons, business cards, point-of-sale displays, window signage and moreall typical small business applications.

29

Wide Print Heads

Resolution isnt the only factor that can impact print speed. The actual size of the print head and the number of lines it can produce in each color per pass across the page affects speed as well. To give these GelSprinter printers even more of a competitive edge, they all utilize multiple extra-wide print heads for greater coverage per pass, thus delivering improved speeds over conventional inkjet printers. Each GelSprinter print head is 1.27 (about 32mm) widethats three times the width of conventional inkjet printers. Each print head has two rows of 192 nozzles, spaced to provide 150-dpi per line. But look closely and youll see the rows are staggered so that when working in tandem, the print head achieves 300-dpi by printing two lines at once. Now take that concept and double it for the GX3000 and GX3050N because each is equipped with 2 print heads, so they can print 4 lines per pass (1 color per line). Now double that again for the GX5050N because it is equipped with 4 print heads, so it can print 8 lines per pass (1 head/2 lines dedicated to each color) and you can see how GelSprinter print head design contributes to overall speed. Further, GelSprinters multiple print head design reduces wear on each print head and contributes to their 150,000/200,000 maximum duty cycle specificationa number equal to the product life. But thats not the only advantage of using wide print heads. GX3000/3050N/5050N print heads are bigger and more durablein fact, theyre permanent and never need replacing over the life of the machine. While there are fewer nozzles in these print heads as compared to bubble jet print heads, that is offset by M-Dot technology to adjust droplet size (see Speed, Image Quality & Resolution). As such, each ink nozzle is spaced wider apart and is stronger than conventional inkjet nozzles. The advantage here is that ink can be ejected through the print head nozzles with greater force. This allows the GX3000/3050N/5050N to use high viscosity pigment-based inks that clog ordinary print nozzles, and permits inkjet technology to evolve into a true printing solution for business users.

30

GX3000/GX3050N/GX5050N

Belt Feeding System

The GX3000/3050N/5050N unique Electrostatic Belt Feeding System is another innovative technology that is transparent to most users, but also contributes greatly to their fast speeds and superior image quality.

Conventional inkjet printers use rollers to grab each sheet of paper and push it beneath the print heads and though the paper path, leaving the sheet unsupported in certain areas between the rollers. This can result in poor image quality as the distance between the print heads and the paper can fluctuate. It also makes the printer more susceptible to slight paper shifting that affects registration, rippling from ink saturation, and paper jams. On the other hand, Savins Electrostatic Belt Transfer Feeding System uses the power of static electricity to hold each sheet of paper firmly in place as it travels through the paper path, eliminating the potential for misalignment and blurring that accompanies registration problems. Because the paper is completely supported at all times, the GX3000/3050N/5050N deliver pages with less curling and rippling, experience fewer paper jams, and ensure proper alignment for two-sided prints. Further, this design maintains the appropriate distance between the paper and the print heads at all times for consistent, precise dot placement. Lastly, it contributes to a wider print areaGelSprinter non-printable areas measure only 0.118 (3mm) wide along all four margins to take maximum advantage of page real estate and produce laser-like image quality at faster speeds.

Controller, Interfaces & Drivers

The GX series printers all utilize a standard embedded print controller (GX3000: 200MHz, GX3050N/ 5050N: 400MHz) that provides sufficient processing power to quickly prepare typical business documents for printing in peer-to-peer or networked printing environments. The GX3000 ships with 32MB RAM standard/maximum memory, while the GX3050N and GX5050N are configured with 64MB RAM standard/maximum memory to provide more virtual space to store the greater amounts of data needed to keep four print heads pumping ink droplets at top speed. (Note: There is no hard disk drive opton for GelSprinter printers.) Connecting the GX3000/3050N/5050N directly to a workstation is easy. Users simply attach the supplied USB cable to the printers USB port. The standard USB 1.1/2.0 interface supports highspeed data transfer at rates up to 480Mbps for fast file processing in peer-to-peer environments.
31

For multi-user workgroups, the GelSprinter N models, the GX3050N and GX5050N, now offer a built-in 10/100Base-TX Ethernet Interface that allow the printer to be accessed by several users on a local area network. This enhancement eliminates the need for the external Pricom print server required for networked use in Phase 1 models. Customers can add this Ethernet interface as an option to the non-networked GX3000. In addition to a standard Ethernet interface, the print controller for the GelSprinter N models now includes support for PCL 5c and PCL 6 page description languages in addition to Savins RPCS. Please note that while customers can add the Ethernet interface to the GX3000, it remains an RPCS-only devicethe PCL functionality is built into the GX3050N and GX5050N at the factory, and cannot be added to the GX3000.

GelSprinter Phase 2 Improvement

GelSprinter Phase 2 Improvement

Whether connected directly to a PC or installed as a networked device, all three GelSprinter models support Savins proprietary Refined Print Command Stream (RPCS Raster) page description language and driver technology to print. RPCS provides simple point-and-click job programming through a graphic user interface (GUI) that clearly shows users the choices available to them and the effects selected modes will have on output.

RPCS has been well received in the small business/SOHO market for its icon-based simplicity. However, many small offices have used HewlettPackards industry standard PCL page description languages for years, and will prefer to continue to use familiar PCL drivers. The GX3050N and GX5050N address this issue with standard support for PCL 5c and PCL 6. The following table outlines the capabilities supported by the RPCS and these PCL drivers:

Unlike drum-based laser printers, the output speed of inkjet printers is influenced by factors like the ratio of black-and-white/grayscale to color content, image coverage, resolution level, and the physical distribution/position of images and text on the page to be printed. Whereas laser printers create a latent image on a drum and transfer toner to paper in a single step, inkjet printers use moving print heads to project ink droplets in the desired position. As a result, page content and image quality selections can greatly impact inkjet printer speed. While 30-ppm speed on a laser printer is always 30-ppm no matter the image coverage factor. Moreover, there is no industry standard test page that all manufacturers must use to benchmark speed and consumable yields. This makes speed a subjective specification, and it is something to consider when discussing print requirements with customers. For our purposes Savin uses the J1 and J6 Test Charts, shown here. The J6 document combines text, fine lines, and colored graphics on a single page, and represents a typical business document. This page is used to benchmark color output speeds and image quality modes. The J1 Test Chart is used to gauge monochrome print speeds. The B1 and B6 test charts are the documents Savin used to confirm the speed of GelSprinter models for publication in brochures and marketing materials. The bottom line is that GelSprinter technology is surprisingly fastso much so that there isnt a single 29-ppm laser solution priced within a thousand dollars of these GelSprinter printers. And because GelSprinter technology does not require fusing, customers will experience fast warm-up and recovery times, fast first print times, and increase overall productivity with exceptional image quality on plain paper. However, to completely understand the relationship between GelSprinter speed and image quality, it is necessary to review Savins innovative Multi-Dot, or M-Dot technology.
34

GX3000/GX3050N/GX5050N

Multi-Dot Technology Ink droplet size is expressed in pico liters. One pico liter (pl) is equivalent to one-billionth of a liter. The smallest drop size that can be printed by these new GelSprinter GelSprinter models is 2pl, Phase 2 or two-billionths of a liter. Improvement This is a vast improvement over Phase 1 models whose minimum droplet size was 5pl, and contributes to GX3000/3050N/5050N higher supply yields, lower CPP factors, and an improvement in photographic print quality. M-Dot technology allows piezo inkjet printers like the GX3000/3050N/5050N to change the size of the ink droplets it produces. By ejecting up to 4 drops in rapid succession, they combine into a single drop in 1/1000th of a secondthe time it takes for an ink droplet to travel in the air between the print head nozzle and the paper. The bigger the dot, the better the fill, and the higher the image quality. In fact, this technology allows the GX3000/3050N/5050N to produce droplets measuring up to 36pl from a single nozzle, which delivers high image quality even in High Speed mode. The increase in dot size also contributes to interpolated resolution, which can be as high as 3,600 x 1,200-dpi equivalent in High Quality mode (maximum 600 x 600 dpi for PCL). The ability to regulate dot size is called 2-bit technologya unique strength of piezo inkjet systems. Bubble jet systems like those from Canon and HP use heat to boil ink until droplets are ejected from nozzles. While this technology also provides acceptable image quality, all dots are of uniform size and are referred to as 1-bit technologyeach nozzle either fires a single ink droplet or it doesnt. To increase ink coverage, bubble jet printers fire ink from multiple nozzles simultaneously, which can lead to wet prints, smudging, or wavy paper as it dries. As a result of Savins M-Dot technology, users can prioritize speed or image quality depending upon the requirements for each job. The print driver provides a number of print quality selections, as pictured here. The table below specifies the speed and resolution equivalent for each mode by model. Keep in mind that higher resolutions require more ink, (which takes more time even at 1/1,000th of a second), and that will affect output speeds. In all modes, these GelSprinter models deliver image quality sufficient for business document production needs at speeds that eclipse traditional inkjet printers, with quality approaching that of more expensive color laser beam printers.

Notes: Duplex output speeds run approximately 75% of the rated simplex print speed. Print speeds vary as a function of image quality selection, distribution of image/text areas on each page, percentage of image coverage, and the PC environment. Print speeds vary slightly when the PCL Driver is selected with the GX3050N/5050N.

A fifth print quality mode, Level Color, is worthy of a dedicated discussion and is reviewed next.

Level Color Mode

Not every page requires presentation image quality. Document drafts destined for edits or internal review (like this SIG), or pages using spot color to highlight information do not need the same amount of color density as a client proposal to serve their purpose. Recognizing this, Savins GelSprinter technology offers a new Level Color Mode. Selectable through the print driver, this mode is separate from the other four Print Quality settings, but it is much more than a draft mode offered by other inkjet printer drivers. Level Color is a print mode that automatically reduces ink thickness and thereby the density of graphic images, while maintaining normal density for text characters. The result is clear, easy-to-read text combined with eye-catching color at a cost per print that is about the same as black-andwhite.

36

GX3000/GX3050N/GX5050N

How do GelSprinter printers know when and where to reduce ink density? Savin recognized that one of the characteristics of the Windows operating system is that it divides the data on a page to be printed into three groups, Text, Graphic, and Image. When the user checks the Level Color box, the GX3000/3050N/5050N automatically reduce the amount of ink used to create elements that appear to the Windows OS as a Graphic or Image by 50% as compared to a Standard or High Quality print mode. However, the thickness of text remains 100% in order to meet the requirements of business users for clear, legible texta notable advantage over printers that produce pages with a noticeable drop in image quality when printing in Draft mode.

Expandable Paper Supplies

As noted in the Product Configuration Tables, the GX3000/3050N/5050N offer more latitude with respect to paper supply and media types than their predecessors. Keep these media-related advantages in mind when discussing these new GelSprinter models with customers:

The standard paper supply is now 250 sheets, sufficient for small workgroups and SOHO environments. Duplexing is now standard on all GelSprinter models, and its availability has been disconnected from the Bypass option. The Bypass Tray capacity has been increased from 1 sheet to 100, with thicker stock weight acceptance up to 140 lb. Index and the ability to accept banner paper up to 51 long, plus envelopes. The optional 500-sheet Paper Feed Unit raises GX5050N paper supply to 750 sheets.

message that instructs the scanner not to copy, scan, or send the page. Instead, page content is either blacked out, or surprinted with a pattern or customized message to deter illegal copying.

New Counter Functions

Tracking printer use is required at all levels of business. It helps customers analyze usage trends, document costs for client billing purposes, and guards against employee abuse. The new GX3000/3050N/5050N elevates system use monitoring with these enhanced counter functions:

Page Counter: Counts pages printed in Color, Monochrome, and Level Color modes. Coverage Range Counter: Classifies printed pages into three groups by GelSprinter the amount of image covered on the page: 0% - 5%, 5% - 20%, and Phase 2 Improvement 20%+, so customers can see ink consumption and even set different CPP factors for each class of page. B/W coverage: 12345678.9%

38

GX3000/GX3050N/GX5050N

Low Power Consumption

Because the GX3000/3050N/5050N employ inkjet-based technology, these printers will have very little impact on your customers utility bills. There is no fusing mechanism, and all GelSprinter models achieve the ready state in 40 seconds or less for fast availability. Conversely, laser printers can take minutes and consume many watts of electricity before reaching operating temperature. Customers can even turn off GelSprinter printers completely in between periods of use without impacting productivity. All GelSprinter models consume 75W or less when printing, and lower their power requirements to 10W or less when in Energy Saver mode.

Supplies & Consumables

There is really only one set of supplies necessary for GelSprinter operation: print cartridges. All other elements, the print heads, tanks, belts, and rollers are permanent. That simplifies service and support for your customers, making GelSprinter models excellent choices for remote offices and users with limited access to support. Users simply open the right front cover to expose the cartridges, each one color-coded to the appropriate color ink slot and coordinated with the position on the control panel/LCD monitor for status display. The ability to replace print cartridges independently contributes to GelSprinter ease of use and low cost-per-page factors. By continuing to refine Viscous Ink formula, Savin engineers have been able to reduce minimum ink droplet size to a microscopic 2 pico liters. This also raises print cartridge yields, and unifies the Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow yields for more coordinated replacement. When used in conjunction with an improved semi-glossy paper stock in High Quality mode, this has also addressed GelSprinter photographic image quality. Published yields for both Regular and High Yield cartridges using the Savin ISO Chart are as follows. These numbers assume 5% coverage on a Letter page. The price is the Suggested Retail Price (SRP) per cartridge.

Savin Software Utilities for Document & Device Management

Savin bundles its popular SmartDeviceMonitor software utility with every GX3000/3050N/5050N. SmartDeviceMonitor is a remote printer monitoring utility that continues to evolve. An improved user interface enables IT administrators to easily monitor and manage entire fleets of Savin devices using simple client workstation tools. This new version also includes new functionality based on input from the field, including the ability to change and download driver default settings, see information regarding attached options, and more. These utilities also provide limited information about other vendors devices so that IT managers can use a single utility to monitor all printing devices on the network. SmartDeviceMonitor consists of two software components:

SmartDeviceMonitor for Admin: A more robust utility designed for network administrators to install, monitor, and manage all networked Savin peripherals from a single workstation. Administrators may change device names or IP addresses as necessary. With the User Management Tool, printing usage can be monitored, and users accessing color printing can be restricted.

40

GX3000/GX3050N/GX5050N

SmartDeviceMonitor for Client: A lite version intended for end-users, this utility is installed on client desktops and allows users to view the status and availability of networked Savin peripherals like GelSprinter printers. Once SmartDeviceMonitor is installed, an icon appears on the Windows taskbar that represents the status of the default Savin peripheral.

SmartDeviceMonitor provides the following advantages:

Ease of Operation: SmartDeviceMonitor can be set up to automatically display the status of the default Savin peripheral, and operation is very intuitive. Enhanced Productivity: Network administrators can view the status of connected Savin systems right from the desktop. This eliminates the hassle of walking to a device to determine if there is a problem. End-users can determine the status of a device before sending a job for increased efficiency. Reduced Downtime: Users can easily select an alternate printer if the primary device is unavailable, ensuring that documents are promptly produced. User Alerts: SmartDeviceMonitor provides pop-up alerts on the users desktop to communicate printer errors.

@Remote
@Remote is a new remote service system that allows the monitoring, managing, and servicing of intelligent devices (MFPs and printers) deployed at distant customer sites in addition to its key benefit, fleet reporting. This is a capability many high volume and national account customers have been waiting for: integrated services that automate meter reading and can report on other areas of system status to maximize system uptime and customer satisfaction, all while removing the physical burden of the customer performing these tasks. (Some features will not be available until Q3, 2006). The @Remote network appliance, designed and developed by Savin, will communicate to the servicing dealer the customers device information such as meter data, toner level status, device status, and failure histories remotely. The servicing dealer can effectively use this information to improve the level of customer service while reducing their cost of operations by automating current operational processes such as meter reading and billing, while enhancing the sales of Savin MFP and printer devices by offering leading-edge service capabilities to ensure maximum performance and proactive response to error conditions. In the case of the GelSprinter products, @Remote would add value by improving device monitoring and usage tracking/fleet reporting across accounts with multiple devices. (The automated meter reading capabilities most likely will not apply in GelSprinter installations as these printers do not require service contracts or periodic maintenance.)
41

The following is a generic review of @Remote regardless of device type: There are two ways to implement @Remote. The first is by installing the external Remote Communication Gate (RC Gate) on the customers network for those accounts with legacy devices; the other is through firmware embedded in the architecture of the latest Savin solutions. (@Remote is included in the basic functionality of the latest Savin controllers, however it is not enabled upon shipment. The @Remote function must be activated by a service technician post-install.) Either way, your @Remote solution will serve to differentiate your Savin GelSprinter proposal by including automated meter reading and reporting services at little or no additional cost (for the embedded version). The external RC Gate approach is the more robust version of the two means. As a network appliance, it can auto-discover connected MFP and laser printers, and monitor the activity of up to 500 Savin and non-Savin devices on a network. This version is best suited for accounts with 5 more Savin networkconnected devices and 25 other networked devices, and provides fleet utilization reporting for customer to analyze usage and manage costs. The embedded version is more appropriate for accounts wanting to automate the meter reading of 1 4 networked devices and the customer does not warrant fleet reporting. The basic advantages of @Remote in either implementation include:

The ability to automatically read and collect copy, print, and fax meters for newer Savin devices. Data collected from all devices is encrypted and sent via secure one-way communication using HTTPS Internet protocol so customers need not worry about back-door entry into the network. An optional modem is available for customers that do not wish to transmit meter data over the LAN. Data is collected at a central server available for download at your dealership via a standard browser and used for billing purposes. The data is available for you and your customer in the @Remote fleet reporting portal.

To browse the demo data set to see how the data is presented, use the URL and the user name and password name which appear below: https://www.atremote.net/savin/ user name=sample / password=password

43

Primary Target Environments

As with earlier GelSprinter models, the GX3000/3050N/5050N are targeted at three basic customer types: those without any color printing capabilities at all, those seeking an affordable alternative to expensive color laser printers, and owners of conventional inkjet printers that have outgrown their limited capabilities. The common denominator for all is that they are low-end business color situations. Now its one thing to be a low-end solution; its quite another to be cheap. Simply put, the Savin GX3000/3050N/5050N are low-end (read: volume) entry-level color printers, and while extremely affordable, are anything but cheap when compared to the conventional inkjet printers found in office superstores. A GelSprinter printer is a new breed of printer, designed to deliver the advantages of inkjet technology with laser-like performance and image quality. Their low price point is what makes them entry-level; their less expensive consumables and lower CPP factors are what make them affordable and attractive to our target customers. Lets take a closer look at the three customer types, and the GelSprinter for benefits for each:

44

GX3000/GX3050N/GX5050N

Customer Type

GelSprinter Benefits

Black-and-white laser beam printer owners. These customers understand the importance of image quality, hence their use of laser technology for monochrome printing. Reluctant to take a step backward in black-and-white output speed, they would like to add color to their capabilities, but have thus far resisted due to the high entry point of color laser printers with equivalent monochrome speeds.

For these users the GX3000/3050N/5050N are perfect entry-level color solutions. Customers can retain their investment in existing black-and-white laser printers by deploying them elsewhere in the office while adding laser-like color output capabilities at minimal hardware cost with acceptable CPP factors for color pages. Their 29-/30-ppm maximum output speeds address customers speed issues. Plus, with Level Color Mode, customers can print color output with no additional cost. For these users the GX3000/3050N/5050N easily address the issue of affordabilityboth in terms of hardware and cost per print. The initial hardware acquisition cost of a GelSprinter is extremely low compared to a color laser beam printer engine at comparable speed. These GelSprinters also deliver on the promise of low total running costs with permanent print heads that help reduce CPP factors to as low as 1.9 for black-and-white pages and 10.0 for color pages (GX5050N) to make color printing affordable. Further, GelSprinters use plain paper, are capable of duplexing just like some laser printers, but unlike laser printers, they offer a Level Color Mode to produce selected pages in color with a CPP comparable to black-and-white. Plus, theyre virtually maintenance-free and no service contracts are required.

Cost-conscious color laser printer users. These customers are already taking advantage of the benefits of color, either through outsourcing or the use of in-house color laser beam printers for selected, high visibility documents. They would like to expand the use of color, but are worried about spiraling costs at the local copy shop, the high cost of consumables if executed in-house, complicated maintenance, and/or inflated printing costs when employees use color excessively or for personal use.

Low-end inkjet owners dissatisfied with printer performance. These customers already recognize the value color adds to their communications, but they are limited by conventional inkjet technology no duplexing, slow speeds, high CPP with print cartridges that require print head replacement, small paper capacities, and no network connectivity options to share access. Its time to step up, but affordable alternatives are few and far between for those customers in budgetcrunched, small business environments.

For these customers, the GX3000/3050N/5050N are the perfect blend of price and performance. For just a few hundred dollars they get access to a PCL-compatible printer that offers larger, more versatile paper supplies, duplexing, network connectivity, and faster speeds to keep pace with their growing business needs and volumes.

45

Where do you find customers like these? In lots of places. For starters, look for these environments and business characteristics:

Small workgroups inside larger corporate environments. Even the largest organizations have smaller departments, and GelSprinter printers are right at home in reception areas, guest/temporary employee cubicles, serving small clusters of users in Human Resources, Public Relations, and Purchasingeven the cafeteria staff to print menu specials and signageremember, GelSprinter printers can be networked! Non-networked areas of a company, such as the executive suite and conference rooms where C level executives work, but do not want their printer to be used/accessed by other workgroups for privacy/security reasons. Growing businesses that need a second or third printer for a new employee or to expand capacity to meet rising volumes. Branch or satellite office locations where low-volume, low-maintenance color printing solutions are required, but the vast majority of documents are created by the main office. National account, fleet sales, or government bids are excellent opportunities for multiple GelSprinter placements, given their initial low hardware cost, low CPP, and minimal maintenance requirements. Support for Savins new @Remote solution will allow enterprise-class accounts track and trace printer use and execute fleet reporting tasks from a single location. And dont forget about the number of emerging vertical markets that are embracing affordable, duplex-capable inkjet color printing: Faith-based Institutions, Retail, Healthcare, Legal, Education, Real Estate, Banking/Finance, Manufacturing, Travel & Hospitality, Insurance, and Food Service. (See Product Marketing Overview for a partial list of applications).

Sales Tactics
The Savin GX3000/3050N/5050N are general office solutionsthey can fit anywhere high speed, plain paper duplex color printing is required. However, Savin cautions you not to spend too much time seeking customers for a sub-$400 printer. The GX3000/3050N/5050N are versatile color printing solutions. But understand they are just a part of your arsenal to complement existing products. Emphasizing GelSprinter solutions in your daily sales activities is not the most profitable strategy. Rather, you are encouraged to speak to the GelSprinter products as added value devices. Bundle them as part of an umbrella workflow recommendation for small areas where spot color for business documents is sufficient, or use them as a door-opener to seed a new account with Savin solutions. In fact, a GelSprinter opportunity lies behind every door. The next time you walk into an office, any office, take a look around. If you see a workstation with an inkjet printer on it, thats an opportunity. If all you see are low-end desktop monochrome laser printers, thats an opportunity too. If all volume is driven to a centralized location, ask how small or sensitive print jobs are handled. You might be at an account for a very different reason, but always be on the lookout for new opportunities. With the new GelSprinter printers from Savin in your bag, youll have a lot to talk about. And when you do, be sure to raise these points in your sales discussions:

46

GX3000/GX3050N/GX5050N

Speak to the GelSprinters low total cost of ownership through separate print head/cartridge design. Reference the high per-page and cartridge replacement costs of typical inkjet printers. Remember to highlight Level Color Mode to provide cost-saving color and how it delivers a CPP equal to grayscale pages for full-color prints. Focus on full-color duplex printing. Can they do it now with existing inkjet or color laser printers? Would they if they could? Stick to Windows environments. These new GelSprinter printers support both PCL5c/6 and Savins RPCS page description languages, eliminating the PCL-compatibility objection. However, GelSprinter models can only be connected in Windows environments. Get to know IT. Thats always a good idea in larger organizations. In smaller accounts where the owner is the IT department, speak to GelSprinters simple connectivity and minimal maintenance design.

These new GelSprinter printers continue to break new ground for you and Savin. Your customers may not even think to ask you about Savin solutions at this level of the industry simply because they do not know weve entered the Business Inkjet market. So talk up GelSprinter, and add some viscosity to your sales efforts!

GelSprinter: Making Color Affordable

Heres where the rubber meets the road. At the end of the day your customer will want to see in hard dollars and cents how Savin GelSprinter technology can meet their needs with minimal impact on their bottom line. Here are two examples comparing GelSprinter expenses to the costs of using competitive Business Inkjet or Color Laser systems. Since all other GelSprinter parts are permanent, the only consumables are the print cartridges. Therefore the GelSprinter CPP calculation is straightforward:
Print Cartridge Color Yellow Cartridge (Regular Yield) Magenta Cartridge (Regular Yield) Cyan Cartridge (Regular Yield) Black Cartridge (Regular Yield) TOTAL REGULAR YIELD CPP Print Cartridge Color Yellow Cartridge (Regular Yield) Magenta Cartridge (Regular Yield) Cyan Cartridge (Regular Yield) Black Cartridge (Regular Yield) TOTAL HIGH YIELD CPP (High Yield cartridges available for use with the GX5050N only) 47 Yield @ 5% coverage 2,300 prints 2,300 prints 2,300 prints 3,000 prints Cartridge SRP $62.10 $62.10 $62.10 $57.00 Yield @ 5% coverage 1,000 prints 1,000 prints 1,000 prints 1,500 prints Cartridge SRP $36.00 $36.00 $36.00 $33.00 B&W CPP share $0.022 $0.022 B&W CPP share $0.019 $0.019 Full Color CPP share $0.036 $0.036 $0.036 $0.022 $0.130 Full Color CPP share $0.027 $0.027 $0.027 $0.019 $0.100

Total Cost of Ownership

Now lets see what it will cost your customer to own a GelSprinter printer for 5 years, averaging a reasonable print quantity of 1,000 pages per month with a 50/50 split in monochrome/color pages.
Savin GX3000/3050N: B&W CPP: 2.2 x 500 Color CPP: 13.0 x 500 Total CPP @ 1,000/month $76.00 x 12 months = $ 11.00 = $ 65.00 = $ 76.00 = $912.00/year Savin GX5050N: B&W CPP: 1.9 x 500 Color CPP: 10.0 x 500 Total CPP @ 1,000/month $59.50 x 12 months = $ 9.50 = $ 50.00 = $ 59.50 = $714.00/year

$912 x 5 year life = $4,560.00 Purchase Price (GX3050N SRP) = $ 279.00 Total 5 Year Cost of Ownership = $4,839.00

$714 x 5 year life = $3,570.00 Purchase Price (GX5050N SRP) = $ 369.00 Total 5 Year Cost of Ownership = $3,939.00

Now lets see how these printers fare against Hewlett Packards latest Business Inkjet color printer, the K550dtn ($299 SRP for the networked, duplex-capable model) at identical volumes using HPs published CPP factors:
Hewlett Packard K550: B&W CPP: 1.5 x 500 Color CPP: 7.7 x 500 Total CPP @ 1,000/month $46.00 x 12 months = $ 7.50 = $ 38.50 = $ 46.00 = $552.00/year 5 Year Total Cost of Ownership: HP K550DTN TCO Savin GX5050N TCO Total Lifetime Differential = $3,059.00 = $3,939.00 = ($ 880.00)

$552 x 5 year life = $2,760.00 Purchase Price (GX3050N SRP) = $ 299.00 Total 5 Year Cost of Ownership = $3,059.00

This analysis shows that it would cost $880 more to own a GX5050N over the HP K550. However, it should be noted that this analysis, using HPs published CPP factors, does not account for the fact that HP recommends the use of special paper for high quality printsup to $35 for a box of 50 sheets of 8.5 x 11 photo paperthats 69 per page. The GX5050N produces full-color, high quality duplex prints on plain paper to deliver real savings while eliminating the need to purchase and store another supply item. If your customer produced just 25% of their total volume in a high quality mode requiring special paper, at 250 prints per month (one-fourth of this 1,000/month volume example), the incremental cost would be another $175 per month. That would quickly eat up any ink-only CPP savings, and in fact cost the customer over $10,000 in special paper costs over the life of the printer! See the Savin GX3000/3050N/5050N Competitive Guide for a more detailed analysis against this machine.
48

GX3000/GX3050N/GX5050N

Now lets see how GelSprinters compare to a Hewlett Packard color laser printer. For this analysis we have selected the HP CLJ3800dn, configured with duplexing and networking. Although this printer operates at only 22-ppm for both monochrome and color pages, comparing the GX3050N to a 29-ppm color laser printer results in a cost differential so great that the comparison no longer makes sense.
Hewlett Packard Color LaserJet 3800dn: B&W CPP: 2.2 x 500 Color CPP: 10.6 x 500 Total CPP @ 1,000/month $60.50 x 12 months = $ 7.50 = $ 53.00 = $ 60.50 = $726.00/year

5 Year Total Cost of Ownership: HP CLJ3800dn TCO Savin GX3050N TCO Total Lifetime Differential = $4,799.00 = $4,839.00 = ($ 40.00)

$726 x 5 year life = $3,630.00 Purchase Price (CLJ3800dn SRP) = $1,149.00 Total 5 Year Cost of Ownership = $4,799.00

HP Supply Data from Website:

CLJ3800 Black Print Cartridge: 6,000 pages @ 5%, $133.00 ($0.022 CPP) CLJ3800 Cyan Print Cartridge: 6,000 pages @ 5%, $170.00 ($0.028 CPP) CLJ3800 Magenta Print Cartridge: 6,000 pages @ 5%, $170.00 ($0.028 CPP) CLJ3800 Yellow Print Cartridge: 6,000 pages @ 5%, $170.00 ($0.028 CPP)

As you can see, GelSprinter technology is roughly equal to the cost of a CLJ3800dn over the life of the printer. However, the GX3050N operating at speeds up to 7-ppm faster for all jobs over the life of the unit! And if your customer went higher into the HP CLJ product line to achieve equivalent 30-ppm output speeds, they would have to spend hundreds more in purchase price. Further, the GX3050N just makes more sense for the budget-conscious small business owner seeking color printing capabilities. The HP CLJ3800 carries a much higher acquisition price, and requires expensive all-in-one consumablesup to $650 for a set of 4 imaging units. GelSprinter supplies, expected to retail for approximately $35 per cartridge, is a much easier pill for the cash-strapped small business owner to swallow. Use this formula to determine the CPP factors of printers your customers are currently using or may be considering as an alternative to your GelSprinter solution, and knock some cents into their color printing capabilities!

Q. How do the GX3000/3050N/5050N fit in the Savin Printer Product Line? A. All are based on Savins award-winning GelSprinter technology, but these newest printers bring a number of enhancements to open GelSprinter sales opportunities to a wider range of business customers. Q. What are the primary differences between the GX3000, GX3050N, and the GX5050N? A. The GX3000 is the non-networked, non-PCL version of the GX3050N. These units are identical in all respects save for networking. Customers can choose to add the Ethernet Interface option to the GX3000, however only N models will support PCL5c/6. The GX3000 is equipped with 32MB RAM and two print heads, while the GX3050N is equipped with 64MB RAM and two print heads, and thus deliver the 300 x 150 dpi spec at 29-ppm.
The GX5050N offers a more robust engine built on the same GelSprinter technology. Its design features 4 print heads and 64MB RAM to provide true 300 x 300 dpi at 30-ppm. The GX5050N has higher maximum monthly volume and duty cycle specifications, and takes advantage of optional paper supplies and High Yield Print cartridges (and resulting lower CPP factors) to support those specs and provide the speed and uninterrupted performance required by small workgroups.

Q. Why the difference between resolutions at virtually the same speed? A. The GX3000 (32MB RAM) and GX3050N (64MB RAM) are equipped with two print heads to create four lines per pass at 150 dpi.
To support this, the GX5050N ships with 64MB RAM in its standard configuration.

Q. Who are the primary target markets and customers for the GX3000/3050N/5050N? A. The GX3000/3050N/5050N are ideal solutions for a small business owner with limited space and budget, a small corporate workgroup for shared use, or C-level executives who require non-networked printers for private use. With low acquisition and running costs, GelSprinter models are also perfect solutions for classroom/computer lab printing, and storefront needs such as retail signage, restaurant menus/specials, real estate property flyers, doctor offices, and local branch/satellite office printing in banks, financial services, retail chains, and insurance agencies. For any and all of these targets, you can tweak the positioning of the GX3000/3050N/5050N to elevate existing printing capabilities. Other targets are users who have grown dissatisfied with the performance of their conventional inkjet printers and need faster output speeds, duplexing, and a more robust printer to support growing volumes and expanding numbers of users.

Q. Are there any vertical markets I should focus on? A. Savins GelSprinter technology has been available for one year in North America, and slightly longer in Japan and other overseas markets. Although still positioned as a business color printer for general office needs, during this time several vertical markets have embraced GelSprinter technology for its simplicity, affordability, and image quality including Faith-based Institutions, Retail, Healthcare, Legal, Education, Real Estate, Banking/Finance, Manufacturing, Travel & Hospitality, Insurance, and Food Service. These customers appreciate the printers fast output speeds, low power consumption, small footprint, and waterproof ink feature. Q. How should the GX3000/3050N/5050N be positioned relative to other colorenabled printer-centric solutions from Savin? A. The GX3000/3050N/5050N are entry-level 8.5 x 14 color business printers. They are best positioned as seed products for growing businesses that need fast, affordable duplex color printing onto 8.5 x 11 plain paper. Savins CL and SP Series color laser printers are for higher volume workgroup environments with needs for greater paper supplies, mixed network support, and perhaps finishing and occasional scanning. Q. How should the GX3000/3050N/5050N be positioned relative to other colorenabled printer-centric solutions from the competition? A. The GX3000/3050N/5050N are part of a new class of printer solution called Business Inkjet. These printers are not intended to compete with sub-$100 photo-application inkjet printers for home/personal use. Rather, they will match up against similar solutions from HP that feature Business Inkjet technology and lay claim to enhanced performance for business needs, like fast speeds and duplexing onto plain paper. For cost-conscious customers seeking affordable color output, you should position Savin GelSprinter printers as low-cost, high-speed alternatives to color laser printers with acquisition costs hundreds if not thousands of dollars less than laser-based devices of equivalent speed. Q. What are the key benefits of GelSprinter printing technology? A. The value proposition of Savins GelSprinter technology are fast speeds, affordable total cost of ownership, and high quality output. All three are harmoniously achieved by the GX3000/3050N/ 5050Ns integration of three core technologies: Viscous Inks, Belt Feeding System, and Wide Print Heads. Please refer to the Sales Information Guide, Core Technologies, for more information on the benefits these technologies provide to users. Q. What makes Business Inkjet different from conventional inkjet printers? A. Conventional inkjet printers are not for business use but rather for home/personal needs. Although less expensive than Business Inkjet, they typically do not have the paper capacity, duplex capability, network connectivity, or ability to support the higher speeds and volumes required by business environments. Conventional inkjet printers are mostly intended to meet photo-printing needs using special glossy papers, whereas the GX3000/3050N/5050N utilize Viscous inks to support everyday business applications like high speed, two-sided plain paper printing.

51

Q. What makes Business Inkjet different from color laser printers? A. Color laser beam printers (CLBPs), especially those featuring a 4-drum design, are generally more expensive hardware propositions, and require service contracts and significant maintenance to replace drums and consumables. CLBPs also require more energy to reach and maintain operating temperature to fuse toner to paper, have longer warm-up and recovery times, and do not support a Level Color Mode. Further, CLBPs are usually larger and much heavier than any kind of inkjet technology, due in part to the need for fusing hardware. GelSprinter technology is light, portable, and comfortably fits on the desktop. Q. What is M-Dot technology, and how does that affect resolution? A. The GX3000/3050N/5050N are capable of printing at resolutions up to true 1,200-dpi. However, they also have the ability to control the size of the individual ink droplets by pumping out several tiny droplets in rapid succession that combine to form a single bigger droplet for better fills and smoother blends. Since up to four drops can be merged into one, resolution can be raised by a factor of three (for droplets 2, 3, and 4). This enables an actual resolution of 300-dpi to be interpolated to 900-dpi, 600-dpi images to be printed at 1,800-dpi, and at the maximum image quality setting, to allow for 1,200 x 1,200-dpi to be increased to 3,600 x 1,200-dpi resolution equivalent (600 x 600 dpi is the maximum resolution for PCL). Q. What advantages does the Belt Feeding System provide? A. Conventional inkjet printers (and even most laser printers) use rollers to grab each sheet of paper and push it underneath the print heads and though the paper path, leaving the sheet unsupported in certain areas between the rollers. This can result in poor image quality as the distance between the print heads and the paper can fluctuate, and makes the printer more susceptible to slight paper shifting that affects registration, rippling from ink saturation, and paper jams.
On the other hand, Savins Electrostatic Belt Feeding System uses the power of static electricity to hold each sheet of paper firmly in place as it travels through the paper path, eliminating the potential for misalignment and blurring that accompanies registration problems. Because the paper is completely supported at all times, GelSprinter printers deliver pages with less curling and rippling, experience fewer paper jams, even with thick papers and envelopes, and ensure proper alignment for two-sided prints. Further, it maintains the appropriate distance between the paper and the print head for consistent, precise dot placement to produce near-laser image quality at faster speeds. Lastly, because the belt design eliminates the need to grab each sheet of paper by the edges, the GX3000/3050N/5050N provide a wider printable area than their roller-fed counterparts, requiring only a 0.0118 non-printable areas around each margin.

Q. Isnt Level Color Mode just another name for Draft Mode? A. Not at all. Draft mode in most other printers refers to a feature in which resolution is lowered and/or image quality over the entire page/document is compromised for the sake of reducing costper-page. Level Color Mode maintains the original depth and quality of text characters while reducing the amount of ink used to create colored images and graphics without impacting resolution. As a result, the customer still receives eye-catching color output, but at a price approximately equivalent to a monochrome page.

Q. What is the maximum output size of the GX3000/3050N/5050N? A. The GX3000/3050N/5050N have a maximum output size of 8.5 x 14 through the standard 250sheet Paper Tray, and the Multi-Bypass Tray and 500-sheet Paper Feed Unit options. Duplexing can be performed with paper sizes up to 8.5 x 11. The Multi-Bypass Tray can accommodate 51 long banner paper. Q. How fast are the GX3000/3050N/5050N? A. In the inkjet world, speed is a subjective measurement that can be influenced by several factors including resolution level, paper type, and the physical amount of image coverage. The GX3000/3050N are rated for speeds up to 29-ppm at 300 x 150 dpi when printing the Savin B1 and B6 Test Charts, a pair of 8.5 x 11 monochrome and color test pages that represent typical business documents at 5% image coverage. The GX5050N has a maximum speed of 30-ppm for the same test documents, but at 300 x 300 dpi. See the SIG for speeds at other resolutions. Q. Are the GX3000/3050N/5050N compatible with Savins Web Image Monitor utility? A. No. Web Image Monitor is not supported. However, the GX3000/3050N/5050Ns print controller does offer a number of utilities through its Maintenance tab, including one-click access to device status with a 5-level ink status monitor, print head cleaning, paper feeding, and registration adjustment procedures. Further, these devices do support SmartDeviceMonitor for Admin and Client and the new @Remote service for remote device setup and monitoring. Q. Can the GX3000/3050N/5050N be used with Savin IS Series Image Scanners for basic multifunctionality? A. No. These GelSprinter models do not support any Image Scanner peripheral for copying or Scan-to functions. If those applications are required, recommend an expandable CL Series solution. Q. Does the GX3000/3050N/5050N support Macintosh or UNIX environments? A. No. All GelSprinter models support Savins proprietary RPCS print technology and driver, while the N models add PCL 5c/6 compatibility. The GX3000/3050N/5050N print only from connected PCs running Windows 95, 98, Me, NT 4.0, 2000, XP , or Server 2003 operating systems. Q. What is Mask Type for Copying in RPCS? A. This new feature minimizes the risk of illegally copying documents originally created and printed using the RPCS Driver. When this feature is activated, files printed via RPCS in the Standard or High Quality mode can be embedded with a special pattern or message that instructs the scanner not to copy, scan, or send the page. Instead, page content is either blacked out, or surprinted with a pattern or customized message to deter illegal copying.

53

Q. Will the GelSprinter printers be marketed by other distribution channels in the Savin Family Group? A. Yes. Beginning with the launch of these Phase 2 GelSprinter models, initial test marketing is complete. The GX3000/3050N/5050N will be available through all RFG distribution channels with the dual aim of increasing visibility for the new GelSprinter brand, and becoming a total solution provider from entry-level color printers to full-blown production MFP solutions.
