The temporary whipping is used to secure the strands of a line, and to prepare that line for splicing. b. Temporary whippings are also be used to secure the end of a line until a more permanent measure can be taken. c. The temporary whipping must also be used when cutting a line; the line is whipped in two places then the is cut between the
whippings. 2.Whipping a line a. Lay the bight of twine along the strand. Then bind the end with a couple of turns. b. Lay the other end on those turns and bitter end. c. Bind them with the bight of the twine. d. Make a few more turns with the bight of the twine e. Pull on the running end of the bight to tighten the whipping. f. Cut off excess ends.
NOTE: This completes one strand. Repeat these steps for the remaining two strands. NOTE: As k if there are any questions about the temporary whipping. B. MAKING A PERMANENT WHIPPING NOTE: The permanent whipping is used to secure the end of a line, before the line is to be placed into service. This includes mooring lines and towing hawsers. NOTE: In FM 55-501, a needle and sewing palm are used for this whipping; however , we will not use a palm or needle, but will install the same whipping. 1. Unlay one strand of the line to be whipped one turn. 2. Place a piece of sail twine or marline between the strands some distance from the bitter end. 3. Lay strand back into place over sail twine, and /or marline while pulling the long end toward your body, pull the short end away from you. 4. Wind turns toward the bitter end in a clockwise direction. NOTE: The whipping must be as wide as the diameter of the line on which it is placed. 5. End turns in the lay where you begin, by going clockwise into the lay , around the strand, coming out in the opposite lay. 6. Follow this lay across the turns, toward the standing part of the line.
7. Open the lay and tuck sail twine or marline under one strand in a clockwise direction, coming out in the opposite lay. 8. Follow this lay back toward the bitter end, again tucking under one strand in a clockwise direction. 9. Follow this lay across turns ending with the opposite end of sail twine and /or marline. 10. Tie ends together with a square knot, tuck ends under one strand, pull on ends until knot disappears. 11. Cut off the excess ends. NOTE: Ask if there are any questions about the lesson covered. SUMMARY CHECK-ON-LEARNING: The students will answer the following questions Pertaining to temporary and permanent whippings. Q. How wide should the permanent whipping be? A. As wide as the diameter of the line. Q. What is the direction of the turns for a Temporary whipping? A. Clockwise with the lay of the line. Q. The permanent whipping is started by Placing the twine under how many strands? A .one Q. What is used to complete the permanent Whipping? A. Square knot. Q. How many temporary whipping should be placed on a line before the line is cut? A. Two AFTER-ACTION REVIEW: Guide students through a after-action review with focus on all learning steps. TRANSITION: In the next hour we will have a PE on whipping of lines.
