Introductory Tutorial
This tutorial guides you through the analysis and design cycles for a structural steel portal frame to illustrate how the program functions. After completing this tutorial, you should explore many of the other features of the program STAAD. The introductory example is the single bay, single story portal frame shown below.

Before you run STAAD-III, you will need to copy the input file that was generated during the Structural Analysis portion of the tutorial to the C:\User directory. To do this, a DOS prompt may be obtained by clicking on the MSDOS button on the Windows Toolbar. At the DOS prompt type "cd User" to change the active directory to the C:\User directory. Copy your files using the DOS command "COPY drivename:\filename.*" This will copy the file from the specified drive to the C:\User directory. When you have finished copying all of your STAAD files to the C:\User directory, close the DOS Window by clicking on the icon with an "X" on it in the upper right corner of the screen. Once you enter STAAD, the screen shown below will appear.

If you are continuing with an existing input file, then click on "Open Old File" to access the window shown below. If you do not have an existing input file, the Introductory Tutorial for Structural Analysis will help you create one. The Open Existing File window will open. Initially, the computer is accessing the "Staadwin" directory, as shown in the figure below. To back out of the Staadwin directory into the directory above it, click with the left mouse button on the icon showing a file folder with an arrow on it. This icon is located just to the right of the "Look In" prompt and the following rectangle reading "Staadwin." Clicking on this icon is similar to typing "cd.." in DOS.

Now the rectangle just to the left of the "Look In" prompt will read "(C:)," as shown in the figure below. Next click twice rapidly with the left mouse button on the "User" subdirectory, which is shown highlighted below. Clicking only once on the word "User" will only highlight the word, while clicking twice rapidly on "User" will access the "User" subdirectory.

The screen below should appear, except that the file name "sample.std" will be replaced by the names of any files currently stored in the User subdirectory.

The generated input file and output results will be stored in this directory. Since this tutorial on structural steel design is for the rectangular frame that was presented with the analysis tutorial, access to the analysis input file is required. Your USER Directory on the C-Drive should contain this input file if you copied this file from your diskette to this directory as discussed in the Copy Files from Your Diskette section. The input file name used in the analysis tutorial was "sample.std". Type the appropriate input file name from the list at the "File Name" prompt at the bottom of the screen. Then click on the "Open" Button at the bottom of the screen. Alternately, one may rapidly double click on the appropriate file name from the list. The window will close, and the appropriate file will be opened. The STAAD-III Main Screen shown below will open.
