he amount of exhaled nitric oxide (eNO) in a persons breath is
a direct product of abnormal airway inflammation. People with
asthma or other respiratory conditions will have higher levels of
nitric oxide (NO) periodically.
Spirometry and other lung function tests are usually used to measure
airway inflammation. However, many times, these tests do not clearly
determine the exact level and cause of the inflammation. There is now
available to physicians a new device that more accurately measures
the amount of nitric oxide. Fraction of expired Nitric Oxide (FeNO)
test is a simple and accurate way to measure the NO level so that the
physician can make the correct diagnosis, prescribe the most effective
medication, and monitor a patients progress. FeNO testing can also
help to minimize steroid use and clarify a patients response to a given
prescription.
This test is endorsed by the American Thoracic Society but since
it is a new, cutting-edge measurement, some insurance plans do not
cover the cost of the testing. While Medicare, Medicaid, United Health-
care, and Coventry do cover the cost, be sure to check with your own
insurance plan. Regardless of your insurance coverage, the testing is
very reasonably priced at under $50.
