Section 4

Summary

The Phalcon 2000-Ex is a radar transponder that is triggered by signals transmitted by marine radar, both in the X and S frequency bands (3 cm or 10 cm wavelengths). It responds to this interrogation by transmitting a coded signal that is shown as a definable paint on the interrogating radar display. The length of this code is normally scaled to the length of the received pulse, so the paint length on the radar screen remains similar for different range scales. This Guide covers Installation, Commissioning, Operation, Maintenance, Re-programming, Purging, and Troubleshooting of the Phalcon 2000-Ex When coupled to either a GPS or a radio system the Phalcon 2000-Ex is also capable of transmitting an off-station code. Dual-token sidelobe suppression techniques are used to prevent interference appearing on radar screens. Advanced power management allows a high output power, with very low power consumption. Extended Duty Suppression can be enabled to reduce power consumption even lower. Periodical self-test routines regularly monitor the frequency accuracy, and overall performance. Fault indication is by a relay contact, (and an internal sounder during Calibration). The relay contacts may be configured under software to be either open or closed under fault conditions. A blanking input is provided to inhibit response to local radar. If a 360 deg. response is not required, then Radar Absorbing Material (R.A.M.) may be used to create specific blind-spots. The Phalcon 2000-Ex can be mounted on buoys, offshore platforms, and other structures that need to be identified as an aid to navigation. A PC / Laptop loaded with M.S. Windows* can be used to get additional information about the operational status of the Phalcon 2000-Ex. It will be required when commissioning, reprogramming, or troubleshooting. Warning: this can only be done in a non-hazardous environment.

Command Settings are password protected to prevent unauthorised programming.

If required, a suitable laptop-based programmer is available from Pharos Marine. * See Section 10

Section 5.2

Installation of the Phalcon 2000-Ex - Positioning

The Phalcon 2000-Ex requires a clear field of view over the intended operational area, any obstruction will severely restrict operating range.

To help prevent activation mount the Phalcon 2000-Ex with as much vertical separation from nearby radars as possible. If activation is a problem then steel sheilding should be considered.

Section 5.3

Installation of the Phalcon 2000-Ex - Mounting

It is vital that the Phalcon 2000-Ex is mounted with its base horizontal.

The Phalcon 2000-Ex is provided with three M12 stainless steel fixing studs on the underside of the base moulding that are equi-spaced on a 200 mm diameter circle. Ensure that any plate used for mounting the Phalcon 2000-Ex is of a material and finish compatible with the stainless steel fixings. Use a plain and spring washer between the mounting plate and each nut, ensuring that the threads are well covered with grease. Tighten the nuts to between 37 44 lbf (50 60 Nm).

Due to the moulded nature of the base the 200mm pitch circle diameter should be considered as approximate. The use of slotted or oversized holes is recommended. DO NOT FORCE THE STUDS INTO THE MOUNTING HOLES AS THE SEALING WILL BE COMPROMISED AND THE PHALCON WILL LOSE PRESSURE

Section 7

Power Requirements

A DC power source of 12 V to 36 V can be used for the Phalcon 2000-Ex. In most installations power will be supplied from either a 12 V or 24 V battery bank, recharged by solar panels, or by a battery charger. Do not allow the battery voltage to drop below 12v A DC Power Supply Unit (DC PSU) may also be used within the range of 12 V to 30 V. It is recommended that a PSU with a current rating of at least 2A is used. A fused isolator(s) should always be used to protect the Indication Junction Box (Control Unit) and Phalcon 2000-Ex. Although the Phalcon 2000-Ex is protected against reverse connections and voltage surges, extra protection should always be considered - fitted to the DC supply and to any AC supply. Consideration should be given to protecting the alarm and data cables. The Phalcon 2000-Ex average power consumption is very low, but during initialisation, the power consumed is in the form of current pulses. It is therefore vital that the impedance of the DC power supply and cables is low, so that there are no excessive voltage drops during the duration of these initial current pulses. The power cables must therefore be of at least 1.5 mm cross section area. If a very long DC power cable run is envisaged, then use larger cables. All cables must be suitable for the Installation. As well as the current rating mentioned above, consideration must be given to weatherproofing, fire resistance, low smoke, low fume etc. You will need to manufacture (or source) a single multicore cable combining the DC power input (from the isolator to the Indication Junction Box) and the alarms. If required, the DC supply cable can be separated from the alarm cable. If this is done, then an additional cable gland will have to be used on the Indication Junction Box. Ex cable glands must be used for both the Local and Indication Junction Boxes Terminal identification and the connection details for the Phalcon 2000-Ex are given in Appendix E.

Commissioning

Purge the Phalcon 2000-Ex with nitrogen and pressurise in accordance with the manufacturers instructions detailed in Appendix M. Also refer to the CD-ROM supplied with the Phalcon 2000-Ex for a visual demonstration of the purge and pressurisation procedure. WARNING: PURGING AND PRESSURISATION SHOULD ALWAYS BE DONE IN A NON- HAZARDOUS ENVIRONMENT. Note the unit will not work unless there is a pressure of nitrogen greater than 250mbar (absolute) inside the Phalcon 2000-Ex. 1. Measure the off-load, on-load, and fully charged terminal voltages of the battery bank, and note them in the table on page 3) of this Guide. 2. Depress for two seconds and then release the reset switch on the front panel of the Indication J.B and lock in the release position - the green 'ON' indication lamp will illuminate on the front panel of the Indication J.B. For approximately 10 seconds after switch-on the Phalcon 2000-Ex will carry out a set up, self-test and calibration routine. 3. The internal sounder will give an indication of the status of this routine. As calibration is completed for each band the sounder will emit a series of bleeps to indicate either a pass or fail. A pass is indicated by a Morse letter U (useable) DIT DIT DAH, whilst a fail indicated by a letter D (defective) DAH DIT DIT. The calibration sequence is S-Band followed by X-Band; each calibration takes approximately 5 seconds to complete. 4. When the switch-on routine has been completed, the Phalcon 2000-Ex will emit a bleep each time it receives an interrogating radar pulse for 10 minutes after powerup. Note: The sounder is not activated during the sleep period. 5. The Phalcon 2000-Ex will re-calibrate every 60 minutes (Settings Command), or if a temperature change of 5 deg. C is detected. (Several re-calibrations will occur after switch on as the Phalcon 2000-Ex achieves its working temperature.) 6. All re-calibrations occur during the sleep period. 7. The Phalcon 2000-Ex Modulation (Morse Character or Response Code), Off-Station Code, Duty Cycle (Service Period), S Band & X Band Sensitivity, Sidelobe Suppression, Alarm Relay contact status, as well as the Baud Rate (for the data communications serial link), are all set at the factory (see section 10: Data Communication). 8. If the unit does not go through any of the above sequences, then please contact the Supplier or Pharos Marine immediately.

Settings - Duty Cycle (Service Period)

This command defines the duty cycle between awake/asleep periods of the system. These settings are primarily concerned with power consumption. An off period is also important to allow a radar operator to see features of the display that are blocked by the Phalcon 2000Ex. For most installations the duty would be set to the 15-second ON (active) period, with a 20-second OFF (sleep) period. For solar installations the OFF period may be extended to 45 seconds. The ON period can be set to a maximum of 60 seconds in intervals of 1 second. OFF time can be set up to a maximum of 120 seconds. The Phalcon 2000-Ex will only stay active for the whole of the ON period if there are radars present to be serviced. The Phalcon 2000-Ex will look for signals for the first 4 seconds of a duty, and if no signals are found, it will sleep for the remainder of the duty (this is known as duty suppression) The Duty Cycle Command is password protected. The Factory Default Password is password. To access type unlock 1 password at the prompt The Phalcon 2000-Ex will respond with the message Unlocked. Phalcon 2000 > The Phalcon 2000-Ex will then remained unlocked for 60 seconds as dictated by the Command atrophy period (ATROPHYCOMMANDS) as displayed on the Summary Screen. Section 12.5 Settings - Extended Duty Suppression

Before trying to understand this command it is important to understand the duty command. The extended-duty-suppress facility allows the system to remain in the sleep mode for more than one duty, after it has not found radar activity in the 4 second pop-up. The ex command allows the facility to be either switched off, or set to between 1 and 10 sleep duty cycles. If this function is used, It will reduce the power consumption of a Phalcon 2000-Ex in a location where there is infrequent radar use, but at the expense of a possibly longer time for the Phalcon 2000-Ex to wake up when presented with a new radar. The Extended Duty Suppression is password protected. To enable the Extended Duty Suppression type ex followed by the number of suppressed duty cycles within the range of 1 to 10. For example setting ex to 5 will suppress the next 1+5 duty cycles if no radar activity is detected during the initial 4 second pop-up period.

Section 12.6

Settings - Sensitivity

This command sets the sensitivity below that the Phalcon 2000-Ex will not respond to an incoming signal. For example, a Phalcon 2000-Ex installed at a harbour, will only be expected to respond to ships that are relatively close so there is always ample received signal. The setting can be within the range 0 to 45 dBm, in 1dB steps. As a guide to expected signal levels at a given range for typical radar output powers see below. The levels are given are for guidance only, received signal strength can vary significantly because of reflections, weather effects, and the efficiency of the radar installation. Reflections from the sea can add causing the signal to be up to 6 dB higher, or cancel causing a complete loss of signal in some places. Placing the Phalcon 2000-Ex high above sea causes the line of sight range to be better, while placing the Phalcon 2000Ex at low height reduces the number of nulls. Contact Pharos Marine for further information. The purpose of this control, which is normally only varied in 5 or 10 dB steps, is to define a general filter to prevent the Phalcon 2000-Ex from responding to ships radars beyond a given distance. The sensitivity performance specification for the Phalcon 2000-Ex is 40dBm, however it works below this, and for greatest sensitivity the sensitivity may be set down to 45dBm. The sensitivity can be set differently on each band. The Sensitivity Command is password protected. The Factory Default Password is password. To access type unlock 1 password The Phalcon 2000-Ex will respond with the message Unlocked. Phalcon 2000 > The Phalcon 2000-Ex will then remained unlocked for 60 seconds as dictated by the Command atrophy period (ATROPHYCOMMANDS) as displayed on the Summary Screen. The Sensitivity can be set independently on each band, and can be adjusted in steps of 1dB. The sensitivity setting will need to be selected to suit the surrounding geography. The Table below is a guide to expected ranges. The range of the Phalcon 2000-Ex will be affected by the efficiency of the radar installation, and the Phalcon 2000-Exs height above sea level. Section 12.7

Settings Sidelobe Suppression

Although a radar antenna directs most of the transmitted signal in one direction, small but significant amounts are radiated in other directions. These unwanted responses are called sidelobes, and can be strong enough to cause the Phalcon 2000-Ex to respond. If this happens then the Phalcon 2000-Ex appears to be located in one or more incorrect positions on the radar display. To help prevent this the Phalcon 2000-Ex contains sidelobe suppression circuits. The Phalcon 2000-Ex keeps a record of the maximum signal level received on any given frequency and pulse width, and uses this to determine whether the signal being received is from the main lobe of the radar antenna or from one of the sidelobes. The ratio between sidelobe power and main lobe power is expressed in decibels (dB), and these are the units entered using the sidelobes command. The Sidelobes command defines a level below the peak signal received from any given radar below that the Phalcon 2000-Ex will not respond. The Phalcon 2000-Ex reduces the stored peak signal level by 6dB at each relaxation period. This is to prevent a response failure to a diminishing main lobe amplitude from a rapidly receding ship. Entries made with this command apply to both the X and S bands. The Sidelobe Suppression Command is password protected. The Factory Default Password is password. To access type unlock 1 password The Phalcon 2000-Ex will respond with the message Unlocked. Section 12.9

Settings Baud Rate

Defines the baud rate for serial communication with the Phalcon 2000-Ex, in the range 300 to 9600 Baud. The unit is factory set to 4800 baud which is sufficient for most applications. Where the distance between the Phalcon 2000-Ex and the programming unit is long, i.e. greater than 50m it may be necessary to lower the baud rate. It will be noticed that the screens will take longer to display at lower baud rates. The Baud Rate Command is password protected. The baud command sets the RS 232 serial port Baud Rate within the range 300 to 9600 baud. When the Baud Rate is changed, it takes effect the next time that the serial communication port is enabled, i.e. after the next sleep period. After making a change, the minimum waiting period before it becomes effective is therefore defined by the Duty Cycle setting. Because of this, should the operator want an instant change to the Baud Rate, the command has the optional parameter now. This forces an immediate change in Baud Rate. Examples Baud<space bar>1200<space bar>now Forces immediate change to 1200 baud. Baud<space bar>1200 Serial port will use 1200 baud at the start of the next duty cycle. If the Phalcon 2000-Ex baud rate is changed, then the baud rate of the PC / Programmer must also be changed to the same setting. If during power-up the screen displays rubbish, then the Baud Rate is usually incorrect. The default rate is 4800 baud and if all attempts to communicate fail, then this rate should be used for both the Phalcon 2000-Ex and the PC / Programmer. Factory Default 4800 Baud

Settings Fault Relay Invert

The Fault Relay Invert Command is password protected. The fault relay invert command allows the fault relay contacts to be set for open when healthy, i.e. closed when a fault is detected. The relay is a magnetic latching type, and is pulsed to the open or closed states depending on the processor status. The default setting is the fault relay contacts closed when healthy, and open during a fault condition. Note: The relay will not flag a fault if the external power fails; the function of the relay is to show that internal tests have passed calibration. Example Phalcon 2000> fa<space bar>on healthy. Phalcon 2000> fa <space bar>off Switches the fault relay to open if Closed in the case of a fault. Switches the fault relay to closed if healthy (Default). Open in the case of a fault.

The Phalcon 2000-Ex must be re-booted each time the fa command is used. Factory Default fa off

Settings Password

For attendance by servicing personnel, the Phalcon 2000-Ex has two levels of operational access via the serial link:

Level 0:

Used by all personnel, no password is required. These commands allow the Phalcon 2000-Ex to be monitored. Changes to Phalcon 2000-Ex operation are not allowed. This is called the User level. Password protected, this allows full control of the Phalcon 2000-Ex functionality and settings. This is called the Agent level. The factory default password for access to Level 1 is password.

Level 1:

Notes

The password cannot be abbreviated it must be entered in full, and is case-sensitive. The password can only be changed from Level 1. The use of spaces within the password is not recommended use only letters & numbers. The password can be up to eight characters long.

It is vital that the new password is kept safe, as access to Level 1 may be required at a later date. If the password is lost then the Phalcon 2000 Ex will have to be returned to the Factory for reprogramming.
The example below shows how to change the Level 1 password from password to IO9oj065

Phalcon 2000>unlock 1 password (Enables access to Level 1 using the default password) Unlocked.

Settings Blanking

The blanking command enables or disables external blanking input. It is possible to inhibit the Phalcon 2000-Ex response to an interrogation with either Pulse Blanking via the radar set, or by Sector Blanking via an externally switched 5v supply. Blanking is used to prevent a response to known radar sources for which no response is required, e.g. harbour installations or other groundbased sites. For additional information see Appendix Q The Blanking Command is password protected. The Factory Default Password is password. To access type unlock 1 password The Phalcon 2000-Ex will respond with the message Unlocked. Settings USIFAR

The USIFAR command enables or disables the USIFAR compatible response. It is possible to frequency modulate the Phalcon 2000-Ex transmitted response. This can be useful in areas of high clutter. The ships radar can then be tuned to receive only the Phalcon 2000-Ex by a manual Rx offset of 25MHz (the modulation frequency). If the radar is equipped with USIFAR it can be set to identify the Phalcon 2000-Ex.

The USIFAR Command is password protected. The Factory Default Password is password. To access type unlock 1 password The Phalcon 2000-Ex will respond with the message Unlocked. Phalcon 2000 > The Phalcon 2000-Ex will then remain unlocked for 60 seconds as dictated by the Command atrophy period (ATROPHYCOMMANDS) as displayed on the Summary Screen.

Section 12.15

Settings Radar Response

The Radar Response (responserate) Command sets the reply response length. When a radar interrogation is received, the Phalcon 2000-Ex responds with a coded response, which is painted on the ships radar display (PPI). The length of the response seen on the display is controlled by the responserate command. The settings are Automatic, Short, Medium, and Long.

The Responserate Command is password protected.

Where the Phalcon 2000-Ex is intended to respond at only short distances, e.g. at a harbour mouth, the responserate can be set to Short, so that its response is most suited to radars operating at short range. A Phalcon 2000-Ex installed at sea might be required to respond primarily to distant ships operating on long pulses, so would be set to Long. The fixed response lengths, for a 16 bit code are: Short 0.94 KM; Medium 1.39 KM Long; 2.76 KM

Setting the responserate to Automatic will cause the Phalcon 2000-Ex to reply with pulse lengths that track the interrogating radars pulse length.

Example

Phalcon 2000> res short Phalcon 2000> res automatic

Phalcon 2000-Ex will reply with short pulses. Phalcon 2000-Ex will reply with automatically scaled pulses.

Section 12.16

Settings Alarm Bleeping

The alarmbleep command turns the internal audible tone on or off. (No password required) The bleep tone can be turned ON or OFF to determine if the Phalcon 2000-Ex will bleep or not whenever it responds to a valid radar. This is useful during fault diagnosis, but drains the power source unnecessarily when no personnel are present.

Example

Phalcon 2000> al on Phalcon 2000> al off

Turns bleep on permanently Turns bleep off after 10 min

Note:

The alarm bleep cannot instantly be turned off. The purpose of the bleep is to assure a user that when he has completed a maintenance operation the system is still working as each time the Phalcon 2000-Ex receives a valid radar interrogation, it will bleep. The bleep function is active for 10 minutes after power up or from cessation of serial port activity.

Section 12.17

Settings Radar Relaxation Time

The relaxradars command allows the setting of the rate at which stored peak-signal levels relax; as ships recede from the Phalcon 2000-Ex.The Phalcon 2000-Ex keeps a record of the frequency, pulse-width, and main-lobe amplitude of all radars that interrogate it. As a ship moves closer to the Phalcon 2000-Ex, the record of main-lobe amplitude (which is the greatest amplitude associated with the radar, captured by a max-hold circuit), automatically increases. However as a ship moves away from the Phalcon 2000-Ex its signal becomes smaller, and it is the responsibility of the Phalcon 2000-Ex to reduce the main-lobe amplitude record. The main-lobe amplitude record is reduced by 6dB at each relaxradars period. Relaxradars may be set between 5 and 600 seconds. Eventually when a ship moves out of the Phalcon 2000-Ex service area, the radar data will be cleared from the Phalcon 2000-Ex memory. This is done by a different mechanism, based on the hits received in a duty cycle.

The Relaxradars Command is password protected.

Example Phalcon 2000> rel 55 Causes the Phalcon 2000-Ex to reduce stored amplitudes by 6dB every 55 seconds. Note: Relaxradars allows the user to specify how firmly a radar will remain in the database once detected. Figures for Allowed Sidelobe levels are degraded by ~6dB per relaxation period. In addition the Interrogation Rate is monitored and Sidelobe levels are cleared completely for long inactive radars.

Section 12.18

Settings Command Atrophy Period

The Atrophycommands sets the time out of serial port. (No password required) Atrophycommands sets the time that the Phalcon 2000-Ex remains in Command Mode after the last command is entered. This period is factory set to 1 minute, but can be changed by the User to any time between 10 seconds and 8 hours. Intervals of less than 60 seconds are not permanently stored, the unit will, after timing out revert to the default period. At the end of the atrophycommands time, the Phalcon 2000-Ex shuts down the serial connection, and negates any unlock command.

Example Phalcon 2000> atr 120 Serial port will time out and password lock will be re-enabled 120 seconds after last entered command.

Phalcon 2000>atr 20 Serial port will time out and password lock will be re-enabled 20 seconds after last entered command. The previously stored time out period will then be re-instated.

Note:

ATROPHYCOMMANDS is sometimes referred to as the "command activity period.

On-Site Troubleshooting

WARNING: ON-SITE TROUBLE SHOOTING CAN ONLY BE CARRIED OUT IN AN AREA THAT IS KNOWN TO BE FREE FROM ANY FLAMMABLE ATMOSPHERE. If a battery bank is being used measure the terminal voltage of the battery bank under load using a suitable Battery Load Tester. Measure the battery voltage at a convenient point that is closest to the Phalcon 2000-Ex i.e. at the Local or Indication Junction Box. For a 12 volt system the voltages expected should be in the range of: 12.5 v to 14.5 v Charging 12.0 v to 12.5 v Off Charge The absolute voltages will be dependent upon the state of charge, and upon the type of batteries used. Compare the off-load, on-load, and fully charged terminal voltage of the battery bank with those noted at the time of Commissioning. (Table on page 3). When satisfied with the integrity of the power source proceed as below. 1) With the PC or Pharos Programmer connected to the Indication J.B, boot up the M.S. Windows Terminal Program (Hyper Terminal), see Section 10 'Data Communication'. Depress <Return> If Phalcon 2000> prompt does not appear then go to 13). If communicating, then the Phalcon 2000> prompt should appear on the screen. Type Date If the current date is incorrect then go to 17) If the current date is correct, then type Cal This forces the Phalcon 2000-Ex to self-test and then re-calibrate. Observe the Command Screen and check the various parameters, ensuring that the calibrate routine was successful. If a Phase 1 Phalcon 2000-Ex and the calibration routine was unsuccessful then type Cal again. (There is an intermittent software bug, which sometimes indicates a re-boot failure, when in fact, everything is ok).

2) 3) 4) 5) 6) 7)

8) 9)

10) If the calibration routine was again unsuccessful then see page overleaf. 11) If OK then type summ (summary) or sett (settings) 12) Ensure that the settings have not changed from their Commissioned values. Use a radar to confirm the correct operation of the Phalcon 2000-Ex. 13) If the Phalcon 2000> prompt did not appear, then the processor within the Phalcon 2000-Ex may have become locked-up due to a voltage surge, or an electromagnetic disturbance i.e. a nearby lightning strike. 38

Phalcon 2000-Ex Operation Manual Issue 4e

14) To re-initialise the Phalcon 2000-Ex, isolate the DC supply and leave disconnected for one minute, and then reconnect the DC supply. The Phalcon 2000-Ex should re-boot emitting two Morse Code U bleep tones (dot dot dash). If successful, the PC screen should scroll through the self test functions finally displaying the Phalcon 2000> prompt. If not successful then see page overleaf. Return to 5) If after typing Date the PC screen displays the incorrect date / time then attempt to update the settings. If after typing Date again the screen still displays the incorrect date / time then the real time clock battery has failed. This will not affect the functionality of the Phalcon 2000-Ex the battery can be replaced at a later date. Type cal. This forces the Phalcon 2000-Ex to recalibrate Return to 8)

15) 15) 16) 17)

18) 19)

In all cases of failure: Do not attempt to open the Phalcon 2000-Ex as the pressure sealing will be compromised. Note: Interrogating the Command Screen can sometimes give the location of the fault. Dump both the Command Screen and the Settings Screen to a recordable media, ensuring that you do not overwrite the existing Commissioning Data. Return the media, or printout a hard copy, with the faulty Phalcon 2000-Ex along with a Fault Report. The screen dumps provide valuable data concerning the fault parameters. Ensure that the replacement Phalcon 2000-Ex settings are the same as the original. Remember to update the Date & Time Settings.

The RS-232 interface is available on Terminals 12, 13, & 15 within the Indication Junction Box. The Indication Junction Box can only be opened in a non-hazardous environment A free- issue cable is provided within the Phalcon 2000-Ex Purge Kit. The cable is complete with a null-modem adapter, and a gender changer. These will enable communications to be set-up using either a PC / Laptop (lead only), or Psion products (adapters required). The data cable length is limited by the constraints of the RS-232 interface. If the data is to be transferred over a distance, then consideration must be given to the baud rate, and to the cable size. Data has been successfully transferred over 200 metres using 2.5mm unshielded cable at a data rate of 1200 baud. If data is to be transferred over longer distances then external RS-485 interfaces should be considered. If a longer data cable is required, or the free-issue cable is not suitable, then a data cable will have to be manufactured to suit the installation. This cable should be ferrule terminated at one end, with a DB9 connector at the other end. The type of DB9 connector (male or female) and the wiring of the connectors will differ, dependent upon whether the PC / Laptop has been configured as a DTE or a DCE device, or if Psion product is being used. Appendix K
Using the Pharos Marine Programmer (Psion 5mx) This procedure will describe the protocol to interrogate or program the Phalcon 2000-Ex using the Pharos Marine Programmer. The Programmer is based on the Psion 5mx, and has the required Terminal Program loaded by Pharos Marine. WARNING: PROGRAM INTERROGATION SHOULD ONLY BE CARRIED OUT IN A NON-HAZARDOUS AREA. Connect the cores of the Power and Data cables into the Indication Junction Box terminals according to Section 8 & 10 Wiring, but do not connect the Programmer. Apply power to the Phalcon 2000-Ex. After approx. 5 seconds a Morse Code U bleeptone will be heard, followed by another Morse Code U approx.5 seconds later. This confirms that the Phalcon 2000-Ex has booted-up correctly. WARNING Do not use a Psion 5mx that is connected to mains power. It has been noted that when a mains PSU is used, the 0 volt (pin 5) of the Psion 5mx COMMS 1 port can be elevated by up several tens of volts above true ground. On a 220 volt PSU, voltages in excess of 110 volts have been measured at the 0 volt pin. If the Psion 5mx was then to be plugged into the (earthed) Phalcon 2000-Ex, damage to the serial port of the Phalcon 2000-Ex could result. If any mains powered device has to be used, then ensure that the 0 volt (pin 5) of the Psion 5mx DB9 socket is wired to the Phalcon 2000-Ex ground using a flying lead before connecting the DB9 lead. ABPM maintain the right not to repair under warranty if damage has been sustained to the Phalcon 2000-Ex, through the use of mains powered computer products. Connect the serial lead from the Psion 5mx to the Junction Box DB9 socket. It is vital that the Gender Changer and the Null Modem are both plugged into the DB9 connector when using the Programmer. Turn on the Psion 5mx. If the Phalcon 2000 icon is highlighted, then depress <Enter>. If the Phalcon 2000 icon is still not highlighted, then double click the Phalcon 2000 icon. Depress <Enter> again to wake-up the RS 232 serial link. If this does not have an effect, then try depressing <Escape>.

Using a PC to Programme the Phalcon 2000-Ex

This procedure will describe the protocol to interrogate, or program the Phalcon 2000Ex using a PC loaded with M.S. Windows. Ensure that the PC has been loaded with the correct Windows Terminal Program. Connect the cores of the Power and Data cables into the Indication Junction Box terminals according to Section 8 & 10 Wiring, but do not connect the PC. Apply power to the Phalcon 2000-Ex and depress the RESET switch. After approx. 5 seconds a Morse Code U bleep-tone will be heard, followed by another Morse Code U approx. 5 seconds later. This confirms that the Phalcon 2000-Ex has booted-up correctly. WARNING Do not use a PC, Laptop, or any computer, which uses a mains powered PSU. It has been noted that when a mains PSU is used, that the 0 volt (pin 5) of many computers COMMS 1 port can be elevated by up several tens of volts above true ground. On a 220 volt PSU voltages in excess of 110 volts have been measured. If the computer was then plugged into the (earthed) Phalcon 2000-Ex, damage to the serial port of the Phalcon 2000-Ex could result. If a mains powered P.S.U. has to be used, then ensure that the 0 volt (pin 5) of the computers DB9 socket is wired to the Phalcon 2000-Ex ground using a flying lead before connecting the DB9 lead. ABPM maintain the right not to repair under warranty if damage has been sustained to the Phalcon 2000-Ex, through the use of mains powered computer products. Connect the DB9 female to female lead (supplied) from the COMMS 1 port of the PC to the Indication Junction box terminals 12,13 & 15.. Turn on the PC and double click the Phalcon 2000 icon on the Desktop. Depress <Return> to wake-up the RS 232 serial link. The Phalcon 2000> prompt should appear on the screen. Note. If the prompt does not appear depress <Return> to wake-up the communication link. If this does not have an effect, then try depressing <Escape>.

If the prompt still does not appear, then fit the Null Modem adapter onto the DB9 socket. Again use <Return> to wake-up the link. The Settings Commands are given in Section 12. If the prompt does not appear, then there is a problem with the communication link. 58

Hose A PRESSURISATION SHOULD ONLY BE UNDERTAKEN BY A COMPETENT PERSON The Regulator is connected to the Nitrogen Cylinder via a BS 341 No.3 R.H threaded coupling. If a British Standard Nitrogen Cylinder cannot be obtained then either an adaptor has to be used between the Nitrogen Cylinder and the supplied Regulator, or a Regulator with suitable fittings obtained. The Regulator must be rated for Nitrogen and have an adjustable output pressure of between 3 & 4 Bar. ONLY APPROVED ADAPTORS OR REGULATORS MUST BE USED. DUE TO THE EXTREMELY HIGH PRESSURES INVOLVED, THE FITTING OF THE REGULATOR TO THE NITROGEN CYLINDER SHOULD BE UNDERTAKEN BY A COMPETENT PERSON The Cylinder Contents Gauge indicates the pressure within the Nitrogen cylinder approx. 200 Bar when full The Pressure Adjustment Screw adjusts the pressure to the Purge Kit must not exceed 1 Bar (gauge) or 2 Bar (absolute) WARNING The Regulator is capable of pressures up to 4 Bar The Outlet Pressure Gauge indicates the pressure to the Purge Kit must not exceed 1 Bar (gauge) or 2 Bar (absolute)

FAILURE TO USE AN APPROVED REGULATOR OR FITTINGS MAY CAUSE AN EXPLOSION DUE TO OVER-PRESSURISATION AND / OR DAMAGE THE PHALCON 2000-Ex AND MAY CAUSE PHYSICAL INJURY

Phalcon 2000-Ex Purge & Pressurisation Procedure

NOTE 1. PURGING AND PRESSURISATION OF THE PHALCON 2000-Ex CAN ONLY BE CARRIED OUT IN AN AREA THAT IS KNOWN TO BE FREE FROM A FLAMMABLE ATMOSPHERE. PURGING IS CARRIED OUT BY THE USE OF NITROGEN GAS AND A DANGER OF ASPHYXIATION THEREFORE EXISTS. WHEN WORKING WITH THIS EQUIPMENT ALL NECESSARY PRECAUTIONS ARE TO BE TAKEN TO AVOID THIS DANGER.

NOTE 2. WHILE PURGING / PRESSURISING THE PHALCON 2000-Ex, DO NOT ALLOW THE PRESSURE TO EXCEED 2 BAR (Absolute) OR 1 BAR (Gauge) AS A PRESSURE DIFFERENCE OF MORE THAN 1 BAR BETWEEN THE HOUSING AND THE ATMOSPHERE COULD DAMAGE THE HOUSING - PREVENTING THE HOUSING FROM SEALING. IT IS THEREFORE VITAL AN APPROVED REGULATOR IS USED.

NOTE 3. THE ENCLOSURE IS MANUFACTURED FROM POLYURETHANE UKKDXD100. THE INSTALLER IS TO ENSURE THAT THE EQUIPMENT IS ONLY LOCATED IN AREAS THAT ARE KNOWN NOT TO HAVE AN ADVERSE AFFECT ON THIS MATERIAL.

NOTE 4. IT IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED THAT THE PHALCON 2000-Ex SHOULD BE DEPRESSURISED EVERY 12 MONTHS TO CHECK THE FUNCTION OF PRESSURE SWITCHES & INDICATORS.

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.

Rotate the Pressure Adjustment Screw (Regulator) fully anticlockwise (OFF position) Fit the Regulator onto the nitrogen bottle ensuring a gas-tight seal. Turn on the nitrogen gas bottle valve and ensure that there is sufficient pressure as indicated on the Cylinder Contents Gauge (Regulator). Connect Hose A from the Regulator into the Flowmeter (Purge Kit). Connect Hose B from INLET 1 of the Phalcon 2000-Ex to the Manometer (Purge Kit). Plug the Pressure Release Fitting (Purge Kit) into OUTLET 1 of the Phalcon 2000-Ex This will enable the nitrogen gas to be expelled from the Phalcon 2000-Ex during purging. Turn the Control Valve (Purge Kit) to ON (horizontal position) Slowly rotate the Pressure Adjustment Screw (Regulator) clockwise to achieve a reading of 60 L/min as indicated on the Flowmeter (Purge Kit), and then continue to purge the Phalcon 2000Ex for a minimum of 4 minutes. (A minimum of 240 L of nitrogen is required, therefore If 60 L/min cannot be achieved due to low pressure then purge at 30 L/min for 8 minutes or 20 L/min for 12 minutes) Once the purge cycle has been completed rotate the Pressure Adjustment Screw (Regulator) fully anticlockwise (OFF position) Turn the Control Valve (Purge Kit) to OFF (vertical position) Remove the Release Fitting (Purge Kit) from OUTLET 1 of the Phalcon 2000-Ex. 62

Phalcon 2000-Ex Operation Manual Issue 4e

14. 15. 16. Disconnect Hose A from the Flowmeter (Purge Kit) Switch the Manometer (Purge Kit) ON. Ensure the Manometer reads approx. 1 bar (atmospheric pressure) The Manometer is correctly set to read Absolute pressure. Note that if the Manometer reads approx. 0 bar then the Manometer has been set to Gauge pressure Change Manometer to Absolute pressure refer to the LEO2 document at the end of this section. 17. Connect Hose A into the Manometer (labelled Hose B within the Purge Kit) Slowly rotate the Pressure Adjustment Screw (Regulator) clockwise until the Manometer (Purge Kit) indicates 2.0 Bar (Absolute). The Outlet Pressure Gauge (Regulator) will indicate approx. 1 bar (Gauge). 18. Permanently mark the position of the indicating pointer of the Outlet Pressure Gauge. When pressurising it is vital that Pressure Adjustment Screw (Regulator) is not rotated past this set mark. Rotate the Pressure Adjustment Screw (Regulator) fully anticlockwise (Off) Disconnect Hose A from the Manometer (Purge Kit) and plug back into the Flowmeter (Hose A Purge Kit) Reconnect Hose B from INLET 1 of the Phalcon 2000-Ex to the Manometer (Hose B Purge Kit). Pressurising 22. 23. 24. Slowly rotate the Pressure Adjustment Screw (Regulator) clockwise to the previously set mark on the Outlet Pressure Gauge Check the Outlet Pressure Gauge (Regulator) indicates approx. 1 bar (Gauge). If higher than 1 bar then reduce the Regulator pressure. The Phalcon 2000-Ex can now be pressurised by turning the Control Valve (Purge Kit) ON and then OFF in short periods until the Manometer (Purge Kit) indicates 1.80 bar (absolute) when the Control Valve (Purge Kit) is in the OFF position. Always ensure that the Control Valve is left in the OFF position. If over-pressurisation should occur then use the Pressure Release Fitting to vent the excess pressure from the Phalcon 2000-Ex. Leave for 5 minutes to allow for the temperature of the nitrogen gas within the Phalcon 2000-Ex to stabilise, then repeat step 24 to re-pressurise to 1.80 bar (absolute). The purge cycle and pressurisation is now complete 26. 27. Insert a key into the Reset Switch (Indication J.B.), and then turn clockwise to its ON position. Depress for 1 second & then release. As there is adequate pressure in the Phalcon 2000-Ex the green ON indicator on the Indication Junction Box (I.J.B.) will illuminate, and the red RE-PRESSURISATION REQUIRED indicator on the (I.J.B.) will remain off. This is the indication status for a purged & fully pressurised Phalcon 2000-Ex. 28. 29. 30. The Phalcon 2000-Ex will now power-up and run its self-test program, emitting two Morse U bleeps upon successful completion. Rotate the Pressure Adjustment Screw (Regulator) fully anticlockwise (OFF position). Turn the Control Valve quickly ON then OFF to release the pressure within Hose A and remove Hose A from the Regulator.

Commissioning & Yearly Testing 31. Note: The Relay & Pressure Control (Phalcon 2000-Ex) during Commissioning, and at yearly intervals, has to be tested to ensure correct indication during conditions of pressure loss. To achieve consistent results through steps 33 to 35 it is vital that the pressure is released in small steps no more than 0.10 bar per second. If the venting is too quick then the pressure will be seen to increase upsetting any pressure readings - due to the adiabatic expansion of the nitrogen gas. The Phalcon 2000-Ex is de-pressurised by turning the Control Valve (Purge Kit) ON and then OFF in short periods until the red RE-PRESSURISATION REQUIRED indicator (I.J.B.) starts to flash. Note the reading on the Manometer (Purge Kit) - approx. 1.35 bar absolute +/-20%, This is the indication status for a purged & partially pressurised Phalcon 2000-Ex. 34. 35. Continue to vent pressure until the green ON indicator (I.J.B.) and the red RE-PRESSURISATION REQUIRED indicator (I.J.B.) extinguish. Note the reading on the Manometer (Purge Kit) - approx. 1.25 bar absolute +/-20%. This is the indication status for a non-purged & totally depressurised Phalcon 2000-Ex 36. 37. 38. Insert a key into the Reset Switch (I.J.B.), and then turn clockwise to its ON position. Depress for 1 second & then release. As there is now inadequate pressure in the Phalcon 2000-Ex the green ON indicator (I.J.B.) and the red RE-PRESSURISATION REQUIRED indicator (I.J.B.) will remain extinguished. As the Phalcon 2000-Ex is now considered non-purged steps 4 to 31 inclusive have to be repeated to purge and pressurise the Phalcon 2000-Ex.

Appendix Q
Radar Blanking
If interrogation by external radar is a problem then the Phalcon 2000 can be blanked. There are three methods of blanking: Shielding Pulse Blanking Sector Blanking Shielding Shielding is a passive method and requires no electrical connections to either the Phalcon 2000 or to the radar and is the preferred method as correct sizing and placement will suppress the main lobe as well as any sidelobes. A shield is fitted between the Phalcon 2000 and the radar and prevents the radar signal from triggering the Phalcon 2000 by blocking the radar signal. The shield should be manufactured from mild steel, either solid or mesh. If mesh, then the hole size should be no greater than 5mm. The shield size and placement is dependent upon the relative location of the Phalcon 2000 and of the radar. It is recommended that the shield should not be closer than 1M to the Phalcon 2000 as unwanted reflections could be generated. Care must be taken only to shield signals from the interrogating radar as excessive shielding may cause blind spots within the Phalcon 2000 coverage. This can be difficult if the Phalcon 2000 and the radar are on the same level. It is more effective if there is considerable vertical distance between the Phalcon 2000 and the radar. Pulse Blanking * Pulse blanking requires a signal from the radar via a suitable interface & cable (by others). With pulse blanking the radar sends a signal just before it transmits. This signal mutes the Phalcon 2000 so that it cannot respond to the radar. Sector Blanking * Sector blanking requires a switch (by others) to be fitted to radar antenna in such a way that the Phalcon 2000 is blanked when the radar antenna is pointing towards the Phalcon 2000. The switch must be fitted to the radar antenna such that its contacts are closed whilst the antenna is pointing at the Phalcon 2000. The timing of the contact closure and opening is critical. The use of sector blanking means that there will be a permanent blind spot within the Phalcon 2000 coverage. Note that the use of pulse or sector blanking will only suppress the main lobe. If sidelobes from the radar are a problem then the Sidelobe Suppression will have to be reduced see Section 12.7 Connections Pulse or Sector Blanking An external +5v signal is required to blank the Phalcon 2000, and the Blanking Input must be enabled see Section 12.13 Indication Junction Box Terminal 3 (external +5V dc input) Terminal 9 (external 0V dc input)

* Note

PM Ltd is unable to give specific connection details of individual radar sets. Due to the intense electromagnetic field close to radar antennas, the use of a fibre-optic connecting cable should be considered (by others)

Phalcon 2000-Ex Operation Manual Issue 4e Appendix R USB Connectivity

Since the introduction of the Phalcon 2000 both PCs & Laptops have moved towards USB serial communication. This has meant the loss of the COM1 male 9 pin D connector. As the Phalcon 2000 is based around the COM1 port a USB to Serial Converter must be used to enable the Phalcon 2000 to talk to the PC / Laptop. These Converters are available from most computer stores, or from R.S. (part number 450-3238) or Farnell (part number 506-6797). As with all USB connections, care has to be taken when dedicating the initial COM port number to ensure an undedicated port is used. When loading a Microsoft Operating System using Appendixes G to J ensure that the COM1 port is changed to the dedicated port. If the port cannot be changed under HyperTerminal then follow the procedure within Appendix S.

Phalcon 2000-Ex Operation Manual Issue 4e Appendix S Configuring a USB to Serial Converter

Some of the newer laptops of the past couple of years no longer have traditional RS232 serial ports; however the Phalcon 2000 can still be operated or connected to these laptops by use of a USB to Serial converter. Various brands of USB to Serial converters are available at most computer stores or from numerous computer related websites by mail order.
A Belkin USB to Serial Converter:

In most cases, USB to Serial converter installation software will install a Windows driver configured for COM3 or COM4 serial port use. The Windows driver for the USB to Serial converter can be easily changed back to any COM port. The following example changes the COM3/4 port to COM1/2. Note that the example shows a baud rate of 9600. For all Phalcon 2000 Products this must be changed to 4800.
