October-November 2013

We are all back home-overwhelmed by the most eventful JVL Festival to date. It is very difficult to put into words the magnitude of the events that took place for those two weeks. The countless concerts by the students and faculty, the incredible venues and the amazing encounters with people of different backgrounds and cultures, the violin makers who brought their instruments for our students and faculty to play on, the overwhelming Italian hospitality shown by the locals, the amazing food (and the best gelato...) are just a few of the memories made in this year's festival. The list can go on and on and without a doubt, this year was an absolute success. There are countless stories to tell about the history of virtually every stone that bears its prints of great musicians. This place breathes its music and art. Mantua, Italy At the same time, I had to take some time off to re-charge the "batteries". My beautiful Maia and I travelled once again to Czech Republics' most beautiful mountains town Marinsk Lzn where we were wonderfully treated in a spa resort. The place is also very famous for its natural healing spring waters for various health conditions. The result: fully rejuvenated, completely stress-free and ready to see my most wonderful students! Back to work also means back to the rigorous preparation of the students who chose to take part in various music festivals and competitions and those who also taking the RCM examinations, and as usual, most of the students will participate. The deadlines for registration are approaching. Please see the details in the News from Examinations and Competitions section of the JLNotes. As usual, our annual Students Recital will be in the early part of February, and as usual, everyone will be performing! I am trying to organize some smaller recitals (performance classes) throughout the year to give students the opportunity to play for each other, however the dates and locations are not set yet and I certainly will keep you informed.

Four of my students: Leo Jarmain, Soulbin Kim, Julia Mirzoev and Jessica Wei have successfully auditioned for the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra and are now the members of that orchestra with very busy rehearsal and concert schedules that include a special "side-by-side" concert with Toronto Symphony Orchestra conducted by James Gaffigan on Wednesday, October 23 at 6:30 pm in the Roy Thomson Hall performing Dvorak's Carnival Overture. I would like to congratulate all of them with an excellent effort. Especially, I would like to congratulate Leo Jarmain for winning the Concertmaster position of the Orchestra. The last of 2013-14 seasons' subscription concert of the Scarborough Philharmonic Orchestra will feature the Violin Ensemble of Young Artists consisted of my senior students in a concert titled Russian Showpieces. The concert will take place on Saturday, May 3 at 8:00 pm. The notice of participation has already went out to all those involved and the rehearsals will commence in December. I am very proud to share with you that my students were two of the laureates of the intermediate string section of the Cremona International Competition. Julia Mirzoev won first place and Leo Jarmain won third place...congratulations!

all three, again...!

Leo Jarmain is also the winner of the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition and will be performing with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra the Bruch Violin Concerto at the Roy Thompson Hall on Saturday, November 9th at 1:30 and 3:30 pm with Evan Mitchell conducting. I hope to see you all there! The Acoustic of the newly built Giovanni Arvedi Auditorium at the Museo del Violino in Cremona, Italy is considered to be the best in Europe.

It is the amphitheater shaped hall with very beautifully shaped wooden inlays across the auditorium that makes the sound bouncing and travelling evenly. Close or far from the stage, on the upper or on the floor level, no matter where you are in the hall, the sound is exactly the same! It is the kind of eerie feeling when someone on the far site and on the upper level turns a page of the program, and you can clearly hear it as if it was from the seat right next you! Worldwide expected event, the auditorium was officially open on September 14 this year; however the faculty of the JVL Summer School for Performing Arts and Cremona International Music Academy in conjunction with the Casalmaggiore International Festival were given the opportunity by the City of Cremona to have a special preview recital during the Festival on July 14. This concert was live recorded by the RAI Radiotelevisione Italiana, Italy's national public broadcasting company for the European broadcasting, and was performed in front of the extremely enthusiastic audience that fully packed the house. David Lakirovich, violin, with Marc Widner, piano, presented the Brahms' Scherzo in D minor and Mischa Lakitrovich, violin, Vladimir Panteleyev, cello and Mana Tokuno, piano, presented Rachmaninoff's Trio elegiaque in G minor.

News from JVL Summer School for Performing Arts

The students, parents and faculty alike overwhelmingly endorsed the idea of re-staging JVL 2014 "Music in the Summer" Festival once again in Cremona, Italy. My belief is that music students best develop when they are exposed to a wide spectrum of musical influences with a combination of a very intense study and performance schedule. It is with great excitement to announce that we will go ahead with preparation for another great festival true to JVL tradition. As of now, the Festival will be held from Saturday, July 12th until Saturday, July 26th. The competition will once again run from July 26th through to July 28th, 2014. The registration for 13th season of the JVL Summer School for Performing Arts International Music in the Summer Festival will open shortly, as soon as the website has been re-designed and updated. I look forward to seeing everyone again in July! The students and faculty from 20 countries around the world have participated in the JVL SSPA/Cremona International Music Academy Summer Festival 2013. Two words that come to mind when I think about this season is absolute success and total enjoyment. Fairchild Television is screening across Canada a documentary about Cremona and our Festival. The documentary is being broadcast on Channel 801 and Channel 36. There are six episodes and episode #3 (specifically talking about the Festival) will air on Wednesday, October 2 at 10 pm. The program is called Timeline Magazine. The only problem is that the program is in Cantonese and for those of us who do not have knowledge of the language, will have to just enjoy the sound! All the interviews that were conducted during the Festival will of course be in English with Cantonese subtitles. I hope you can all watch it!

Within the next few weeks, all videos (over 100) will be posted on the JVL YouTube channel and I hope you will enjoy watching them. Please do feel free to contact me with any suggestions or concerns that you may have and please dont forget to check the website www.MusicInSummer.com often for updates of information.
