Our future firefighters have just competed in an annual event that showcases their skills and techniques. The Midlands Cup is a junior CFA event held around the Region 15 district each year with teams working in crews and participating in a variety of events. This year, and for the first time, Gordon Junior Fire Brigade were declared the winners. A very proud and excited Gordon Fire Brigade senior member Diane Lawson said the main focus of the day is working together as a team. The team of five had their skills tested in many events and were also judged on using the equipment in a safe manner and maintaining overall team safety at all times. Throughout the year the Gordon junior CFA members have learned map reading, communications, search and rescue, and first aid, just to name a few. They were tested on these skills and points attributed to each event. The Midlands Cup is an annual event run by volunteers and this year was hosted by the Ballarat Junior Fire Brigade at the University running track in Mt. Helen.

Splash of cash for festivals

MOORABOOL COUNCIL WILL give a total of $17,500 a year to its four biggest festivals. The Bacchus Marsh Harvest Festival ($4000), the Strawberries and Cherries weekend ($5000), the Ballan Autumn Festival ($5000) and the Blackwood Easter Woodchop ($3500) will get the money saved after Moorabool dropped out as a financial member of a regional tourism body. Cr Allan Comrie told the October 16 Council meeting the Daylesford and Macedon Ranges Regional Tourism Board had done nothing for Moorabool since its establishment in 2010 - and the money would be better spent on community events that already attracted tourists. I believe Macedon and Hepburn are doing really well on the board, but Moorabool has been left out a bit, he said. We should be helping our own events survive. Weve had so many events over the years that have just burnt out. A report to the meeting said Moorabool was moving from a focus on specialist tourism to a broader economic development focus. Local event organisers have long regarded their limited financial and human resources as a major barrier to their sustainability and improvement, author Peter Forbes said. He said the lack of money and time to adequately plan, manage risk and undertake market research caused a cycle of volunteerfatigue that eventually led to the death of annual events. Cr Paul Tatchell said giving money to a community festival was a small investment for a great prize. There were 5500 people at the Autumn Festival in 2013 and for whatever reason, the festival has really struck a chord, he told the meeting. Federal Ministers want to come to it now and be photographed. Even the poorest people in our community can come along and have a great day without sending themselves broke. Cr Tatchell said 65 per cent of people surveyed at the Ballan Autumn Festival were from outside the 3342 postcode, while Cr Comrie said 75 per cent at the two Bacchus Marsh festivals lived outside the area. Cr Tonia Dudzik said spending money on local events was important to small businesses. This will be better value for money than we have spent in previous years, she said. But Cr Tom Sullivan voted against the idea, saying the allocation of money needed more rigor. There is no accountability, he told the meeting. I think we have a responsibility to ensure there is transparency in the process. This is ad hoc and it does not reflect well on strategic good governance. Mayor Pat Toohey also opposed the allocation, saying the $17,500 should be for tourism across the whole shire. Council also voted for staff to prepare a report into events sponsored by Moorabool in the past and guidelines for the future.

Spitting chips over sub division

A DEBATE over a new home in Warrenheip has ended in an argument over how much land is needed to farm potatoes. Moorabool councillors have voted to grant a planning permit for a four-bedroom house and shed on the 8ha property in Mahars Rd on volcanic red soil, about 350m from the Western Freeway. Neighbour Keith Parry said the land was in prime potato-growing country and should stay available for horticulture rather than being carved up for subdivision and becoming infested with weeds. If this application gets through, therell be more houses later, he told the meeting. The applicant claims they will use the 20 acres to grow potatoes for McCains, but McCains require properties around 400 acres. This is just someone getting a house on a rural block - but we are in some of the best red-soil potatogrowing area in Australia and itll be under houses soon. A Farm Plan for the property said the site was highly productive land and would be used for potatoes, cereal and lambs. It also said a house and shed on the property would not adversely affect farming. Cr Paul Tatchell said he backed small farms, but not if it was an excuse to allow suburban sprawl. Im not supportive of prime agricultural land being turned into rooves and chimneys, he said later. The land we have, we should protect. History tells us that you can make no money from 20 acres of spuds not unless you have a water supply and another farm next door. West Moorabool councillor Tom Sullivan said Moorabool needed to make sure there was some agricultural use on the property. Just because its a smaller block, it doesnt dissuade other forms of agriculture or horticulture such as growing truffles, he said. West Moorabool is going through transition and potatoes are in decline, but the land could be used for other types of farming. Mayor Pat Toohey said homes on small farms could be a welcome alternative for the community. It could bring volunteers to the CFA or extra kids to our schools, he said. We already accept potatoes from overseas so some of our farmers are going into lucerne instead, which is quite profitable.

And the Moorabool Mayor is ...?

MOORABOOL COULD have a new Mayor by the end of the month. Councillors will vote on their new leader at a statutory meeting at the Ballan chambers on October 30. Councillors Paul Tatchell and Tom Sullivan have both indicated they were thinking of standing for the top job this year. Im seriously entertaining the idea because I believe I have something to offer, Cr Sullivan said. I havent ruled it out and I have done it before. Cr Sullivan has been a councilor since Moorabool was created in 1996. Cr Tatchell said he would consider running but would not lobby other councillors for support. They can make their own minds up, he said. I would never want to be a Mayor who got there via manipulation. Its got to be based on merit - not backroom deals. Meanwhile, two East Moorabool councillors said they would think about the role in the future. Id love the opportunity but I cant commit to the time required, Cr David Edwards said. Cr Tonia Dudzik said she was unsure if now was the right time. I would love to see Moorabool have a female Mayor, so families and children can be represented, she said.

Ready for Sale Trail

Id love the opportunity at some stage. Councillors Allan Comrie and John Spain have both said they would not run. The position is open to all councillors and those that put their hands up on October 30 will present a brief to the meeting before a vote takes place. If only one councillor is vying for the position, it will be recorded as uncontested. Cr Sullivan was Mayor in 1998, 1999 and 2000; Cr Toohey in 2009, 2010 and 2013 - and Cr Comrie in 2002 and 2003. Current Mayor Pat Toohey did not respond to questions from The Moorabool News after repeated attempts to contact him.

As part of an upcoming community open day, Darley Neighbourhood House and Learning Centre is providing locals with the opportunity to sell their unwanted treasures without the hassle of staging an individual garage sale. This Saturday, October 26, a nation-wide Garage Sale Trail will see households around the country hold sales at their own homes. But those seeking an easier option can take part in the House Car Boot Sale. By paying $10 per car space, residents can bring along their unwanted goods and sell them in the House car park. Many people dont want to organise a whole garage sale, dont have a suitable space or dont want the invasion of privacy, says House manager Anna Curry.

Committee member Chris Cocking (left) and manager Anna Curry preparing for the white elephant stall and car boot sale. It is a great opportunity for those people to sell their items using our space. A white elephant stall will also be held on the day and donated goods can be dropped off at the House in the lead up. The House open day and car boot sale will operate on October 26, 10am-2pm at 33 Jonathan Drive, Darley. To book a car space phone 5367 4390 or 0402 153 648.

The younger side of art

MOVE OVER ROYAL Academy and the Heidelberg School here comes Ballan Kinder. Budding artists as young as three have shown the world their fertile imaginations via the preschools first annual art show. The October 12 evening included more than 300 works from 114 children across five classes at the Simpson St centre. Parents and grandparents came from a 100km radius to check out what their kids had been creating and they were not disappointed, as the kinder was transformed into a maze of colour, light, texture and revamped egg cartons. The artwork represents the childrens interests, teacher Meaghan Lake said. Families enjoy seeing the artwork and an art show is a beautiful way of showcasing these wonderful pieces. It is also a chance for families to truly understand the value and educational perspective of art. Mums, dads, best friends, pet lambs, spiders and even a few birds nests were prominent topics. Some art was left completely open to interpretation. The children as a group also painted three large canvases, won by Bree Jenkins (red group), Janet Lovejoy (yellow) and Narelle McLeod (blue).

Anger over Fire Levy

A GREENDALE man is angry at the way the Fire Services Levy has been calculated. Ron Stickland told the October 16 Council meeting he was concerned high-value properties could get preferential treatment because they paid higher levies to fund the CFA. I agree with the fire levy, he said. I just dont understand why that is related to the value of your property. Until this year, fire services have been funded via insurance bills. That has now been replaced with a levy added to Council rates notices and calculated according to property valuations. What difference does it make what value your house is? he said. If its not worth much, does a go-cart turn up? And if its worth a bit, do you actually get a fire truck? Mayor Pat Toohey said he understood Mr Sticklands concerns and asked that he write a letter to the Emergency Services Minister.

Learn how to be self sufficient

WANT TO SAVE some cash and save the planet at the same time? A series of workshops at the Darley Community Art Garden on Saturday October 26 will show you how. The garden in Holts Lane is a fabulous project and the perfect venue for something like this, Natasha Mills from the Moorabool Environment Group said. The workshops are going to be held right in the middle of Spring to inspire people to get planting. The neighbouring Silver Linings Op Shop at Darley Baptist Church will also be

open on the day and items from the op shop including beds and bathtubs are already finding new uses in the garden. Topics covered on the day will include planting and maintaining fruit and vegetables, keeping chickens at home, how to set up and maintain a worm farm for compost and worm tea, and how you can help the community art garden. Ms Mills said MEG would hold more future events at the Holts Lane venue including a produce swap. For details go to www. mooraboolmeg.org.au

Committee decided

Message from the Mayor Advocacy

With the change of Government at the Federal election and the State Government announcement identifying Ballan and Bacchus Marsh as Plan Melbourne growth areas, it is timely to update the community on our current advocacy plans and action. Advocating to State and Federal governments on behalf of communities is an important role of council and with new federal ministers in place we have taken the opportunity to write to several ministers to ask them for meetings to discuss key priority projects throughout Moorabool Shire. One of the key issues to be resolved for us is whether the Federal Coalition Government will honour commitments made by the former Government broadly described as Regional Development Australia Round 5A and 5B.These projects include the indoor aquatic centre, new buildings and light improvements at Maddingley Park, Masons Lane redevelopment, and upgrades to Ballan, Wallace Bungaree and Gordon recreation facilities. We have written to Federal Telecommunications Minister Malcolm Turnball seeking clarification on the paths forward for the NBN rollout and answers on how to access the $100 million of Blackspot funding for mobile coverage that was announced during the election campaign. In relation to road issues, we are advocating strongly to Federal and State Ministers, in particular on the Bacchus Marsh truck by-pass issue. State Planning Minister Matthew Guys has failed to deliver an alternative to the Woolpack Road option, and now some 600 days later, we are still without a solution. The Halletts Way and truck bypass are critical road infrastructure requirements for Bacchus Marsh and we are seeking meetings with Federal Minister Warren Truss and State Transport Minister Terry Mulder to find a practical solution and a commencement date for these critical projects. Council will continue to ask the tough questions and seek high level meetings with all relevant government departments to have input into future plans for our critical social recreational and road infrastructure needs. We will work with both state and federal governments in partnership with our community to find the solutions needed and we call on our state and federal governments to make decisions and get on with the job. Bacchus Marsh ignored again

HOPES HAVE BEEN DASHED for Bacchus Marsh of easily gaining an indoor public pool, new Government secondary school or an end to its traffic woes. Most of the town will stay in the safe State Labor set of Melton until at least 2022, after the Electoral Boundaries Commission released its final maps last Thursday. After the November 2014 election, the rest of Moorabool Shire will be in the new seat of Buninyong which is expected to be marginal and in a better position to bargain for State funds. For Moorabool, the final map is almost identical to the draft boundaries released in May and effectively splits the shire down Korkuperrimul Creek in the Underbank Estate valley. In July Council wrote to the EBC requesting that all of Bacchus Marsh be included in the Buninyong electorate. If this was not possible, it also requested that Darley be included in Macedon another marginal seat. But the Commission said the suggested changes would tip the population beyond the legal limit for a State seat. Under the Councils suggested boundaries, Melton districts enrolment would be well below the allowable 10 per cent deviation from the average, while Buninyongs and Macedons enrolments would be close to 10 per cent above the average. the EBC final report said. Buninyong and Macedon districts are growing fast, and under the Councils suggested boundaries would very soon breach the 10 per cent threshold. In addition, the EBC considers that the Councils proposal would split the Bacchus Marsh community of interest. It should be noted that Bacchus Marsh has been in the Melton district since 2002, and that Bacchus Marsh could now be regarded as urban rather than semi-rural. In July, Council had also asked that the name Buninyong be changed to Moorabool - as the new State seat would centre on the river of the same name. The EBC is reluctant to give an electoral district the same name as a shire, the final report said. No name will cover the whole district. The name Buninyong refers to a central point in the district, between the urban area of Ballarat and the rural areas to the south and east. The creation of Buninyong will mean the abolition of Ballarat East. Sitting Labor MP Geoff Howard is yet to announce if he will stand again. The upper North East corner of Moorabool will also be included in the Macedon electorate including Korweinguboora, Dales Creeek, Blackwood and Coimadai (north of Diggers Rest Rd). Upper House regions will be determined by the shape of lower house districts. Buninyong will be in the Western Victorian Region but Macedon will be in Northern Victoria, meaning that voters in Blackwood and Korweinguboora will be represented by Legislative Council members based 300km away in Wodonga. The Commission received 608 submissions about the proposed changes and another 72 after deadline. A total of eight submissions were lodged regarding the Buninyong electorate and four for Melton.

Its a healthy, natural, fun and rewarding way to be in the garden, Mr McDonald said. Over $4200 has been raised after a group of seven friends organised an inaugural High Tea in aid of all Cancers affecting Women. Committee spokesperson Robyn Grima from local business Village Homewares said they were overwhelmed with the support. The generosity from local business donations, ticket sales and just the support in general, was extraordinary. We held the event in Bacchus Marsh at Burkes on Main and owners Annette and Paul Burke not only kindly provided the venue but their wait staff too. All the food was donated and we cant thank everyone, businesses and individuals, enough for the success of the day, Ms Grima said.

Dear Editor, We are writing this letter as we have had an overwhelming response and support in regards to Abbeys Road Fundraising. Abbey was diagnosed with a rare congenital condition called Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum (ACC), when she was 7 days old and is now 4 years old and in her second year of special school. We are fundraising for this family as they are trying to fund a vehicle to cater for Abbeys special needs, being in a wheelchair and unable to assist, just a simple car trip requires planning and organisation and not to mention that Abbey is getting harder to move and lift. She is unable to walk, talk and unable to sit unaided due to her condition, but she is a little princess regardless. THIS LETTER... is to thank the community in the Moorabool shire for their generosity and a BIG thank you to Salvatore and staff (Ballan Butcher) for helping us to help the Mackinnon family. Words can not express how much we are thankful. Anne and Emma Smith On behalf of Abbeys Road Fundraising Mount Egerton state government is extending smoking bans to protect commuters from second hand smoke, with the added benefit of making smoking less visible to impressionable young people. In Greater Melbourne alone, an estimated 235,000 people catch the train or tram to work every day a figure that is growing steadily. These new smokefree measures mean more Victorians will be free from the dangers of second hand smoke on their daily journey to work. They also have the added bonus of supporting smokers to quit and stay smokefree for good. VicHealth supports the Victorian Government in its efforts to continue to decrease the smoking rate. Email: news@themooraboolnews.com.au ments of 174 turbines, up to 150 metres in height, consideration be given as to whether is it really a good idea to destroy our beautiful countryside with such inefficient projects as WestWinds Lal Lal and Moorabool approved wind energy facilities. The uncertainty surrounding the commencement date for the Moorabool project does nothing to help us feel settled or able to plan for the future. WestWind has the option of requesting an extension of time regarding the approved application to build. With a change to a conservative government and the Coalitions plans to scrap the carbon tax and take a long hard look at the economics of the RECs, there is more uncertainty. The report on the ABC TV Stateline on October 11 by Guy Stayner which feaDear Editor, I recently drove from Ballan to Mt Mercer to see for myself how the building of the 64 turbine Wind Energy Facility was progressing. The project is well advanced with at least a dozen towers at least 126 metres high with huge nacelles and blades on top. Since the advent of wind farms in Australia I have always tried to maintain an open mind as I believe there is a need to look at various ways to reduce our carbon footprint. I have now come to the conclusion that the disadvantages regarding the use of wind to replace fossil fuels far outweigh any advantages. My fervent hope and plea to Federal, State and Local Councils is that before the townships and rural areas of Lal Lal, Mt Wallace and Ballan are inundated with two more huge developtured Ballan as one of three rural towns ready for future development, it seems the State Governments planning department has hopes that Ballan is ripe for expansion. The most suitable areas for development appear to centre around and south of the railway line where there is much well drained and gently undulating terrain. The only big problem is that the boundary of the approved wind energy facility is only 3.5. Kms from the main street of Ballan. The five largest regional towns in Victoria all have a restriction of 5 Kms around their boundaries preventing a project such as a wind farm from encroaching on the township. Days on market longer for private sales

a shorter time on market reflects more favourable conditions for buyers and sellers. Private sales generally take longer to sell than an auction. This is because they do not have a set date of sale so the number of days that a home can be listed can vary. Generally, homes tend to be on the market longer during the quieter months of January and February. The number of days on the market starts falling by March. In September 2013, the average number of days that a private sale property is on market was 113 days in regional Victoria. This is an increase from the previous month as well as from six months in March when it averaged 108 days. The number of days that a property is on market is inevitably linked to the negotiation process. The sooner the buyer and seller can agree on a price, the quicker the sale. The real estate agent will facilitate this process. When negotiating, keep in mind that the agent is legally obliged to act in the best interests of the seller, not the buyer. This is one of the many reasons buyers may choose to use the services of a buyers agent to assist. For more information visit www.reiv.com.au

Regional Victorian properties are remaining on the market for four days longer than six months ago in contrast to the decrease seen in metropolitan Melbourne. With more than 3,000 auctions scheduled in the remaining weeks of October, it is easy to forget that there are a great many more private sales. In any given year, private sales comprise 70 to 80 per cent of sales. The performance of the auction market can be measured through the clearance rate. It is a handy metric that determines the share of properties on auction that are sold. Likewise, the metric used to measure the performance of private sales is the days on market. This is the number of days that the property is on the market before it is sold. Generally,

Whats on your mind?

The column where you steer and I drive!
Simpson upright for the neighbours. As the houses get bigger and the blocks get smaller, the Hills Hoist has been turned into some wall contraption that looks like a painted farm gate hinged on the wrong side to avoid hitting the back fence; the modern backyard is gradually becoming the smallest space on the property. The Biafran bricklayers must be making a fortune as they line up the gutters to the top of the fence line to make sure every inch of the block is filled by house. You would be surprised how many neighbourhood disputes start with an inch of guttering infiltrating the neighbours peace and harmony. The days of backyard cricket are numbered as the buffalo grass gets replaced by a hall runner made from synthetic green stuff, with a vertical garden hanging off the fence. There is nothing like having the neighbourhood kids over for a game of cyber cricket in the home theatre room to replicate the great outdoors. On a serious note, we are going to have a generation of country kids that will never know the security and self-entertainment value of an adventure in their own backyard. Kicking the footy, wrestling the Labrador, building the tree house, and swinging off a Uniroyal hanging from an old gumtree will be lost to the good old days. The safety and security of the backyard is being replaced by a communal space engineered and planned for optimum entertainment value, where children dont need to use their imaginations, and the dogs freedom lies at the end of a 3ft lead. The expensively maintained Parks and Gardens have replaced the sanctity of the private open space that we once took for granted. The Great Indoors where computer games and cable television are denying our young people from the many wonders that exist outside the brick veneer. The humble Victa is slowly being superseded by the blower-vac, and the family BBQ is starting to look like a gourmet kitchen sitting neatly in a 10x10 space called an alfresco! I never thought I would see the day when the simplicity of a space called a backyard would be replaced by a French word for an outdoor activity. Could you imagine adjourning to the alfresco for a game of alfresco cricket? The fact that it usually has three walls and a roof suggests that we are becoming way too cosmopolitan to enjoy the simple things in life! Throw in an outdoor heated spa, plants hanging from the rafters, and a wicker lounge suite, with glass dining table and all we have managed to do is bring the outdoors indoors; we are

with Paul Tatchell

Has the traditional Australian Backyard been blitzed?

It never ceases to amaze me why in a Country this size we insist on living on top of each other. I can understand why it happens in the city, but in the bush? I am not sure whether its driven by the developers, lifestyle, or a fear of open spaces, but from a bloke that grew up in the bush I simply dont get it. We are slowly becoming a series of Concrete Islands growing out of a rural landscape. I cant imagine waking every morning to the dulcet tones of my next door neighbours sleep apnoea, or walking five paces from my back door into a colorbond fence to save my family from the after effects of the curried sausages consumed the night before! I have a theory that if you are living that close to a neighbour that they know what youre having for breakfast, you may as well knock the fence down and throw a couple of extra rashes of bacon on the obsessed! You know you have gone too far when the string on the totem tennis pole needs to be shortened so it doesnt hit the bug zapper hanging off the alfresco roof! We even put nets around the scaled down trampolines to avoid our kids colliding with the neighbours kids in alfresco skydiving across the colorbond divide. The sandpit has been replaced by a clam shell full of kitty litter for the neighbours cat, and the retractable clothesline had replaced the jungle gym, not to be used on washing days! The family car has become battle scarred by the narrow driveways, and playing on the road means climbing over cars on an oversized bitumen footpath resembling a cricket pitch on steroids. The nature strip trees have given way to saplings and the only distraction from the flat screened idiot box is the neighbours arguing from the stress and tension of urban living. I accept the advantages of low maintenance living, and I acknowledge there is a place for it, but it needs to be balanced. Emulating Brunswick in the Bush to fit the people in is ignoring the space for the buildings. Demanding open spaces whist we build a Legoland of roofs and fake chimneys is losing sight of the obvious. The backyard needs to make a comeback. If we wait until the colorbond walls that divide us close our imaginations, there will be nowhere for the backyard to return. Environmental Opinion
about sustainability, but theres a sense in which it doesnt matter that these peoples dreams are based on, embedded in, intertwined with, and formed by an inherently destructive economic and social system. Their dreams are still their dreams. What right do I - or does anyone else - have to destroy them. At the same time, what right do they have to destroy the world? (Derrick Jensen, Endgame: Volume 1: The Problem of Civilization) Its no wonder we dont defend the land where we live. We dont live here. We live in television programs and movies and books and with celebrities and in heaven and by rules and laws and abstractions created by people far away and we live anywhere and everywhere except in our particular bodies on this particular land at this particular moment in these particular circumstances. (Derrick Jensen, Endgame, Volume 2: Resistance) There are times the lies get to me, times I weary of battering myself against the obstacles of denial, hatred, fear-induced stupidity, and greed, times I want to curl up and fall into the problem, let it sweep me away as it so obviously sweeps away so many others. I remember a spring day a few years ago, a spring day much like this one, only a little more sun, and warmer. I sat on this same couch and looked out this same window at the same ponderosa pine. I was frightened, and lonely. Frightened of a future that looks dark, and darker with each passing species, and lonely because for every person actively trying to shut down the timber industry, stop abuse, or otherwise bring about a sustainable and sane way of living, there are thousands who are helping along this not-so-slow train to oblivion. I began to cry. The tears stopped soon enough. I realized we are not so outnumbered. We are not outnumbered at all. I looked closely, and saw one blade of wild grass, and another. I saw the sun reflecting bright off the needles of pine trees, and I heard the hum of flies. I saw ants walking single file through the dust, and a spider crawling toward the corner of the ceiling. I knew in that moment, as

with Tom Kingston

There is light at the end of the tunnel

In light of the recent report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) which concluded that, unless we plot a drastically different course, by 2100 our earthly home could be headed for climate breakdown. The last hundred years has seen average planetary temperatures increase by 0.85C and scientists have warned of the dangers of this increase exceeding 2C. Barring a transformation of our relationship with coal, gas and oil, the IPCC have warned of the dangers of a 4.8C rise within 90 years, I thought I would, once again, quote from Derrick Jensen. To reverse the effects of civilization would destroy the dreams of a lot of people. Theres no way around it. We can talk all we want Ive known ever since, that it is no longer possible to be lonely, that every creature on earth is pulling in the direction of life--every grasshopper, every struggling salmon, every unhatched chick, every cell of every blue whale--and it is only our own fear that sets us apart. All humans, too, are struggling to be sane, struggling to live in harmony with our surroundings, but its really hard to let go. And so we lie, destroy, rape, murder, experiment, and extirpate, all the control this wildly uncontrollable symphony, and failing that, to destroy it. (Derrick Jensen) To end with another note: Mark Dowd a freelance writer and broadcaster suggests, A single citizen cannot take on the whole Chinese or American economy. He or she must simply do what is right in their own domestic situation and spread the word by humble example. Consumer choices such as sourcing electricity from a company that uses only renewable energy, rationing flying, growing food locally and taking advantage of government grants to retro-fit a house with effective lagging and insulation, can all be shared rapidly via social media to encourage a change of culture. Bacchus Marsh Bowls

(Lord Street)
Division 1 travelled to Romsey this week, a major danger game for the club. It proved to be just that on a tricky new green with the Marsh 20 shots up in a tight match. After the break Romsey never went away, in fact actually hitting the front with less than 10 ends to play overall. A steadying 4 from Alan Mahers rink and a few nervous 1s from Jeff Holloway saw Bacchus Marsh get what they came for a win. In the end it was by 4 shots 100-96 and 15 points to 3, Jeff Holloway winning 25-21 and Dylan Filuk 25-23, while John Fordham managed a draw 26-26 and Alan Maher a 24-26 loss. This close win sees Bacchus Marsh 3rd on the ladder. Division 2 hosted Macedon and came back from close to 50 shots at tea to only go down by 13. Barry Steinholdts rink once again won convincingly 42-21, the only 2 points for the team in the 101-114 loss. Nipper Hanson lost 23-35, Helen Steinholdt was defeated 19-23 and Trevor Coad 17-35. Division 2 are now sitting 6th on the table after two very hard matches to begin the year. Division 3 continued their winning form, defeating Woodend at home 85-53 and are now equal top of the ladder. Ian Webster defeated J York 37-12, Sue Stevenson won 27-14 and J McGregor lost 21-27. Pennant wasnt the only bowls for the weekend though, as three Marsh teams travelled back to Romsey to play in the District Triples, with Jeff Holloway, Justin Webster and Peter Garland winning their section and snagging a bye straight to the final in early November. All in all a solid weekend for the club, with a huge match up looming next week against Woodend.

Sulky Snippets
By LEN BAKER
The Yarra Valley meeting on Monday October 14 was a big one for the Melton/ Bacchus Marsh area, winning half of the program. Beautifully bred five year old Mach Three/Out Swing N gelding Machin Out is getting better with every outing and after coming off a great third at Tabcorp Park Melton on Friday, scored an easy victory in the United Petroleum Pace for C4 & C5 class over 2150 metres. Trained at Melton by Lance Justice, Machin Out taking a concession for competent teenager Zac Phillips began with a rush from outside the front line to lead with ease before coasting to the wire untouched to register a 4.7 metre victory over Golden Grinder and Mister Clooney which trailed the winner. The mile rate 2-02.3. The old stagers stepped out in the Cox Plate Day Claiming Pace over 2150 metres, with victory going the way of the Ross Sugars (Hopetoun Park) trained 8-Y-0 I Am A Fool/Sheza Fake gelding Cowboy Cadillac who chalked up his 19th victory when making his 144th appearance at the races, while also giving Zac Phillips a driving double for the afternoon. Starting from inside the second line, Cowboy Cadillac raced by Denis Grieve and partners was quickly away from the markers to settle four back in the moving line, with the 14-Y-0 Mister Douglas leading out from the pole, before surrendering shortly after to Dartmoor. Once the speed slackened, Cowboy Cadillac was off and running to park in the open, with Phillips dictating the terms of the race. Taking care of the leader prior to the home turn, Cowboy Cadillac defied all challengers to score from the fast finishing Flyin Interstate from last, with Mister Douglas and Takeiteasyonme dead-heating for third. The mile rate 2-00.9.

Showing no speed at all from gate six, Mother Nature settled at the tail of the field, with Lovable Nick (gate five) crossing Glenn Conroys Drop Us A Line (gate two) to lead. After Drop Us A Line surged clear in the straight, Mother Nature after weaving inbetween runners was extricated into the clear and finished with a wet sail to gain the day by two metres running away over Drop Us A Line in a Conroy quinella, with the rank outsider Kadabra Dynasty (five back the markers) using inside runs to finish third. The mile rate 2-04.5.

Former Kiwi 6-Y-0 In The Pocket/Lite Jade mare Lite Jagermeister made it two wins from three Australian outings when successful in the De Bortoli Pace for C2 & C3 class for Coimadai duo Adam Kelly and Gavin Lang. Despite racing in the open from gate three shadowing the polemarker Amazing Kano, Lite Jagermeister travelled smoothly all through the 2150 metre journey, winning by 3.7 metres from Magical Molly which trailed her in a rate of 1-59. Amazing Kano held down third 15.2 metres away.

Melton co-trainers Maree and John Caldow deserve plenty of accolades after producing 5-Y-0 It Is I/Miss Clare gelding Fanagalo to land the Book Your Christmas Party Pacers Handicap for C2 or better class over 2150 metres at Bendigo on Wednesday when making his first appearance at the races in a 12 month period. Coming from 10 metres, Fanagalo settled five back along the markers, before moving to be one/one mid-race. Eased three wide by John running into the final bend, Fanagalo ran home strongly to score from Master Pip with Nova Arama third.

Parwan father and son David and Brad Barnes were giant killers on the night at Ballarat, when 6-Y0 Falcon Seelster/Crown Defender gelding Coltrane Bromac got the chocolates in the Ferndale Confectionery Pace for C2 & C3 class over 2200 metres in a rate of 1-58.3. Given a lovely trip by Brad three back along the markers Coltrane Bromac was eased to lead the outside division in the back straight on the final occasion, proving too strong over the concluding stages to gain the day in advance of Extricate from near last, with Goodtime Veejay weakening to finish third.

Juniors The B2 team had a bye but all our other teams played in tough windy conditions. After winning last week by 1 game the C2 Black team lost their match with the same margin away against Dunnstown 2/15 v 2/14. The C2 team kept the winning streak going with a very close match at home against Mt Helen. There was only a difference of 2 games after 4 sets. Ballan won 3/20 v 1/18. The C3 team played away against Navigators. The younger players fought valiantly against the older Navigators side, but just couldnt close out the games. Ethan and Ben lost their set 2/6, while McKinnon and Fletcher played a very good set, only losing in the tie-break 5/7. In the third set Navigators were a bit too strong, but in the last set Ballan got the set with some good tennis from Fletcher and Ethan. Ballan lost to Navigators 1/14 v 3/21. The C4 juniors travelled to Mt Helen and were not able to get a set. Kelsey and Tully played a very good last set winning three games and several other went to deuce. Mt Helen 4/24 def Ballan 0/8. The C5s made the trip to Ross Creek and there was another strong performance from this team. Although they could not win a set, they were competitive and just unlucky not to score a set win. Ross Creek 4/24 def Ballan 0/14. Next week B2 v Navigators (at BTC 7&8) C2 Black v Warrenheip (at Ballan) C2 Blue v Meredith Red (at Meredith) C3 v Ross Creek (at Ross Creek) C4 v Napoleons (at Napoleons) C5 v Napoleons (at Napoleons) Seniors In their third match into the 2013/14 fixture and more then seven years absent

from the court, the Senior A3 Ballan team won their first match against Ross Creek. Playing at Buninyong both teams struggled with the windy conditions and it was the last game of the day that decided the match. Kristy Tatchell was in fine form winning all three of her games with the rest of the team winning two each. All games were very close and the team enjoyed some good hitting. Newcomer Cam Stewart was the mens fill in with Paul Tatchell out with a hamstring. As Shane Woodroffe and Kristy Tatchell walked onto the court for the last mixed doubles the scores were locked at 4 sets 49 games each. Shane and Kristy won the game 8/6 to give the A3 team their first taste of victory for the season. Next Week A3 Ballan v Haddon (at Haddon)

Melton owner/trainer/ driver Jason Hackett was victorious with 4-Y-0 Armbro Operative/Heartlite mare Open Heart in the Oaks Day Pace for C0 class (mares) over 1650 metres. Open Heart was restrained from inside the second line to settle at the tail of the field before sustaining a long run to record a 9.2 metre margin in advance of Dancinwithjodi with Isntshesomething weakening to finish third.

Congupna trainer/driver Scott Stewarts outstanding 7-Y-0 Blissful Hall/Petite Alto entire Bitobliss was a brilliant winner of the $20,000 VHRSC Classic for M0 or better class over 2240 metres in a slick 1-55.4. Settling last from the extreme draw, Bitobliss gained lovely three wide trail into the race at the bell on the back of Melpark Major, before exploding away on straightening to register a 3.5 metre victory over Five Star Anvil and Jack In Flight.

Premier Division travelled to Geelong West to face their more fancied opposition. Unfortunately Avenue only came away with 2 points due to Sam Shannahans rink winning by 3 shots. The other 3 rinks all suffered narrow losses, however it is important that despite the losses, Avenue stillscores some points on a weekly basis to keep in touch with the ladder leaders. Avenue losing overall by 20 shots Division 3 who are still finding their way in the higher grade, hosted Sebastopol. For the second week in a row, Matt Koeks rink were the only successful rink winning by 4 shots. Peter Glass rink had a narrow 2 shot loss, however the other 2 rinks had a hard day at the office. Avenue losing overall by 24 shots. Division 5 travelled to Mt Xavier and were able to chalk up their first win of the season. A9 shot win to Lyn Robinsons rink and an 8 shot win by Vic Foxfords rink paved the way for the victory. As in the higher grades, the other 2 rinks had narrow losses, but the side were still able to win overall by 8 shots. Division 9 had a terrific win over Ballarat North winning all three rinks to remain undefeatedafter the first three rounds. Star performers were Viggo Hermanns rink (23 shots up) and Brian Trevennas rink (22 shots up), with Brian Bullens rink rounding out the trifecta winning by one shot. Thetop two divisionshave a number of quality players returning over the next 2 weeks and their inclusion should strengthen the top two sidesas well ashaving a filtering effect in the lower two sides in the coming weeks.

Club needs players

ITS time to bleach those cricket whites and dust off those baggy greens. Darley Cricket Club is gearing up for the summer season, but needs more male and female players to join its Under 16 sides. Darley Cricket Club secretary Jim Shea said the club was seeking any aspiring Ashton Agars or Alyssa Healys to join up this season. We are specifically in need of players for our under 16 sides, which are boys currently aged either 14 or 15 or girls aged 16 or 17, Mr Shea said. Hopefully theyve been buoyed by the hype surrounding the double Ashes Series and are looking for something fun to do for the upcoming summer. He said despite recent successes across all grades and age groups, the Darley Cricket Club had witnessed a drop in numbers at under 16 level. A long-term injury to one player and player withdrawals have been enough to warrant a forfeit of our round one match against Brown Hill. Unless the club can recruit at least three new players and regain or replace the recent losses, we will be forced to withdraw from the under 16 competition for the summer, he said. This would be disappointing for all at the club, but mostly for the current under 16 players themselves who are committed to this club. Darley compete in the Ballarat Gold Competition with home games either on the Turf Wicket at Darley Park or Civic Hub Oval, whilst most away games are centrally located in Ballarat. Players or parents with any queries can contact senior coach Matt Cape on 0448 383 009 or junior coordinator Steve Beaton on 0425 731 856. For more information emailinfo@darleycc.com. au or visit www.darleycc.com.au

Bacchus Marsh Little Athletics

It was Bring A Friend program at the club last Saturday and many of the athletes took advantage of this opportunity. Athletes whose friend/s now join Little Aths, are eligible to enter the draw to win a PlayStation 3. Lots of PB (Personal Best) results were recorded with William Lalor (Boomerangs) setting a new record in Under 9 boys Discus with a throw of 26.56 metres. In the Under 16 events, Brant Lopes (Dolphins) set 2 new records; the first in the Discus throwing 32.17 metres and in the Long Jump pit Brant leapt 5.42 metres. Jack Shaw (Eagles) also set 2 records, running 25.42 secs in the 200 metres and 59.58 in the 400 metres. Courtney Homewood (Boomerangs) bettered her own record in the Javelin with a throw of 20.94 metres. Jack and Ryan Shaw represented the Western Metro Region at the Little Athletics Victoria Region Challenge last Sunday at Landy Field, Geelong. Several BMLAC athletes participated in the LA Vic 50 Year Open Day which was held in conjunction with the Region Challenge, producing some fabulous results.
