Vacancy Report

October 2013
The Department of Employments Internet Vacancy Index, particularly in seasonally adjusted terms, has been affected by MyCareers move to free job advertising in July 2013. For this reason, annual changes in trend data are a more reliable indicator of actual changes in job advertising. As more data become available, the Department expects to be able to estimate the impact of this change on the series with greater accuracy and is currently investigating the need to adjust the series in coming months to provide a better indication of recent vacancy trends.

Key Points
Over the month to September 2013, the Internet Vacancy Index (IVI) increased by 0.5% in trend terms. In line with other vacancy measures (such as the ANZ Job Advertisement series and the SEEK New Job Ads Index), the IVI appears to be stabilising. That said, the longer term trend for vacancies remains subdued. Over the year to September 2013, the IVI has fallen by 11.9%, and is 56.8% below the March 2008 peak. The IVI has declined in all eight occupational groups and all states and territories over the past year, with the exception of Tasmania (up by 2.9%). The

Regional Internet Vacancy Index1

Over the year to September 2013, the number of online vacancies increased in five of the 38 regions. The strongest increases were recorded in Southern Highlands & Snowy NSW (up by 6.9%) and Riverina & Murray NSW (6.8%), while the strongest falls were recorded in Goldfields & Southern WA (down by 51.6%) and Outback Queensland (47.7%). Despite vacancies rising in some regions over the year to September 2013, vacancies in many regions across Australia remain relatively subdued compared with the levels recorded in May 2010 when the regional vacancy series began. Change in internet vacancies over the year to September 2013

Over the past year, there has been a shift in the distribution of vacancies across Australia. With softening conditions in mining related activities over the past year, vacancies in Western Australia, Queensland and regional South Australia have declined at a faster rate than other regions across Australia. For example, the proportion of vacancies lodged in Western Australia has fallen by 2.9 percentage points over the past year to stand at 11.4 per cent in September 2013. By contrast, the proportion of vacancies lodged in New South Wales has increased by 3.5 percentage points over the past year to stand at 35.4 per cent in September 2013.

1 The Regional IVI is in three month moving average terms, and is not seasonally adjusted and trended. As such, the series contains more seasonal effects than the overall IVI series and should be used with caution.

Explanatory Notes
The monthly Internet Vacancy Index (IVI) is based on a count of online job advertisements newly lodged on SEEK, MyCareer, CareerOne and Australian JobSearch during the month. Duplicate advertisements are removed before the IVI vacancies are coded by the Department of Employment to occupations based on the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO). The data are seasonally adjusted and trended, and then indexed (January 2006 = 100). The Skilled IVI is based on the aggregation of Professionals and Technicians and Trades Workers. The Regional IVI was first published in September 2010 and back cast to May 2010. The Regional IVI concords vacancies to 38 best fit regions across the states and territories from the four job boards. Minor changes in the series may occur from month to month due to back casting. The series published each month is the most up to date at the time and overwrites previous data. For more information, please contact Carmel ORegan (02 6240 2599) or email carmel.oregan@deewr.gov.au. Any media enquiries should be directed to the Department of Employment media unit (media@deewr.gov.au).
