INTRODUCTION LaGyp Levels Of Finishing

LaGyp Levels Of Finishing has been adopted from the Australian/New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 2589.1:1997 Gypsum Linings in Residential and Light Commercial Construction Application and Finishing. Part 1: Gypsum Plasterboard. This standard applies a system called Levels Of Finishing to help determine the quality of finish required at the design stage.

LaGyp Taping & Jointing System

LaGyp Taping and Jointing System is used to create continuous seamless plasterboard wall linings, partitions and ceilings using purpose-designed compounds and tapes for finishing all plasterboard joints. Using LaGyp plasterboard systems together with LaGyp Taping & Jointing allows for quicker installation, high quality of finish to be achieved and markedly less drying time when compared with traditional masonry finishing methods. NOTE: In some parts of Vietnam it is common practice to use square edge plasterboards, mesh tapes and limestone / cement based compounds for jointing . This method for jointing is not recommended and is likely to result in severe joint cracking within 12 months of the job being completed.

LaGyp Design Profiles

LaGyp Design Profiles are a range of curved, rounded and shadow-line beads that allow for aesthetic looks to be easily incorporated in LaGyp wall linings, partitions and ceilings. Other LaGyp Design Profiles like the LaGyp Movement Control bead, allow LaGyp systems to move with the building design movement.

LEVELS OF FINISHING INTRODUCTION

LaGyp Levels Of Finishing LaGyp Levels Of Finishing has been adopted from the Australian/New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 2589.1:1997 Gypsum Linings in Residential and Light Commercial Construction - Application and Finishing. Part 1: Gypsum Plasterboard. This standard applies a system called Levels Of Finish to help determine the quality of finish required. The level of finish is determined at the design stage. This is essential since each level of finishing requires a tighter tolerance control for frame alignment and plasterboard fixing and finishing. The desired level of finish is achievable only when these requirements are met throughout the stages of construction. The level of finish required also affects the method of jointing, the number of coats of jointing compound applied, the fitting and finishing of corner tapes and beads and if a final skim compound is required over the entire plasterboard and jointed surface.
A thin coat of LaGypEasy Finish over the joint and plasterboard provides level 4 Finishing.

LEVELS OF FINISHING

Joints treated with 3 coats of LaGypEasy Joint 90 to provide a level 4 Finishing.

The 5 Levels Of Finishing LEVEL 1 Used in concealed applications, example area is plenum areas above ceilings. Not open to public view. LEVEL 2 Suitable where surface appearance is not of primary concern like warehouse, storage or other similar areas. LEVEL 3 Suitable for surfaces intended to have heavy or medium textured coatings through sprayed or hand-held application. Also suitable where heavy wall coverings like wall paper is the desired final decoration. LEVEL 4 The accepted level of finish for most construction. Used where critical lighting shines on light textured coatings, medium or light wall coverings like wall paper. Also used where smooth textured finishes like satin/flat/low sheen paints are illuminated by non-critical lighting. LEVEL 5 Used where gloss or semi-gloss paints are specified. Also used where critical lighting affects smooth satin/flat or low-sheen paints. Joints and plasterboard will require a skim coating to remove differential surface textures and porosity.

The level 4 Finish is the quality of finish generally applied in most construction, unless a higher or lower level of finish is specified.

Defining decoration When defining the level of finish for jointing it is important to choose the correct level that will suit your decoration needs, normally the finer the decoration finish the higher level of finish is required. Below chart provides guidance information for deciding the level for plasterboard finishing.

Level 3 Finishing

Critical lighting When defining the level of finish required it is also important to consider if the jointed plasterboard surface will be subject to any natural or artificial critical lighting after decoration. In situations when critical lighting may occur with smooth textured finishes then LaGyp Level 5 Finishing is advised. Critical lighting, this occurs when the natural or artificial light source is nearly parallel to the wall or ceiling surface. Non critical light, this occurs when the natural or artificial light source that strikes the surface is diffused and not parallel to that surface.

Paint - rollers When painting jointed plasterboard selection of paint roller is very important to ensure the paint texture will cover both joints and have plasterboard surface which have different substrates in terms of porosity and surface texture.

Fine texture rollers tend to leave a very smooth paint texture over plasterboard and joints and do not tend to hide the joints, especially under critical lighting. This decoration normally requires a level 5 finish.

Medium and heavy texture rollers will leave medium and heavy textured paint over plasterboard and joints and normally hide the joints. This decoration normally requires only a level 4 finish.

Entire plasterboard and joint surface is covered with a skin compound ready to prime. Surface should be flat, smooth and have no marks or ridges.
