It is their hope to be able to cover tlie whole field of classic painting by including all important artists who were born before the year 1800, and the preparation of new volumes is being carried on steadily and systematically with this end in view.

As new editions of earlier volumes are called for, improvements are made when considered advisable; newly discovered pictures are inserted, and opportunity
