Explain key curriculum components: leadership skills
development, community awareness, and service
learning. Other activities include registration, ice
breakers, Manito facility tour, Meyers Briggs
modified assessment, Rising Stars pre-assessment
and team building exercises.
Friday, July 10, 2009
Retreat
o Complete a series of teambuilding exercises aimed
at building trust and breaking down
communication barriers; form teams for
community service projects.
o Facilitate various leadership skills development
exercises, review Meyers Briggs assessments and
identify leadership styles. Students will learn how
to identify leadership qualities and understand how
these qualities are developed.
o Facilitate leadership skills development exercises;
students will learn to recognize success and will
create tools to help them achieve their own
personal success.

“Who We Are – Past and Future”
Facilitate leadership skill development exercises;
students will revisit past experiences and determine
which of their behaviors are a result of a negative
conditioning or conformity, as a precursor to making
good choices in the future. Students will also review
how their attitudes about themselves and others can
drive behavioral change and personal achievement. A
Franklin County history tour will round out the
session as the community awareness piece.

Facilitate leadership skill development exercises;
students will learn various aspects of utilizing an
effective goal setting process, and will integrate goal
setting behavior and self-leadership enabling them to
become successful on their own terms. An Overview
of Franklin County Tour will give insight to
economic development as the community awareness
piece.

“Tools For Success ”
Facilitate leadership skills development exercises;
students will recognize that applied knowledge and
specific action steps must be united to overcome
fears and achieve results. In addition, the role of time
management in accomplishing goals and being under
control will be explored. A panel of area educators
and will follow as the community awareness piece.

“It’s All About Communication”
Facilitate leadership skills development; students will
learn specific steps for successful interpersonal
communication and for the community awareness
they will learn about various media and the role of
gatekeepers. Students will also have time to work on
their community service learning projects

“Divided We Fail”
Facilitate leadership skills development exercises;
students will learn additional self development
techniques that will help them accomplish their goals
and also how unsatisfied needs motivate people to act
or react. The community awareness component will
be a film and discussion about social class, People
Like Us, and also a diversity panel discussion to
explore race, gender, age, etc.
