Nicole Barton Pol 166 22207 9/24: What should a country do to ensure both the safety of its citizens

s and their liberties?

According to the ACLU article, New York City Muslim-American residents, represented by the New York Civil Liberties Union, are filing a joint lawsuit against the NYPDs allegedly discriminatory and suspicionless Muslim Surveillance Program because it violates First Amendment rights. In order to ensure both the safety of its citizens and their liberties, this countrys national government should make sure that state and local governments closely monitor the protection, as well as the execution of laws in relation to substantive and procedural liberties of its citizens. According to the text We the People, Civil Liberties are protections of citizens [personal liberties] from improper government action [and/or restriction] and are designed to put limits on governmental power over the people (Ginsberg, pg. 94). In terms of the government, what can and/or cannot be done (known as substantive liberties), as well as how such actions are allowed to be carried out (known as procedural liberties) both make up the perimeters within which Americans Civil Liberties exist. These provisions in the Bill of Rights guarantees that of the core values of life, liberty and property cannot be disputed without adhering to the procedural category of due process of law

which protects citizens against arbitrary actions by national or state governments (Ginsberg, pg. 94). Religion can be loosely defined as metaphysical and moral constraints on the free will of an individual. The statement I will do is subject to the belief and membership terms and conditions of any particular religion. The First Amendment therefore, protects our choice on how we will act. Freedom of speech by Christian protestors rallying for Pro-Life values outside an Abortion Clinic are protected under the First Amendment because the Bible states that abortion is not something they do. Therefore, they are allowed to say so since the Constitution protects their right to both be Pro-Life as well as spread the word of the Gospel. In contrast, (and fairly so) Pro-Choice advocates who are atheist are protected in their actions and choices due to the same principles and Amendment. In order to ensure the safety of these opposing ideals and liberties, the judicial and legislative systems should make sure each maintains their freedom of choice as long as it does not infringe on the freedom of choice of another. The protestors can protest as much as they want as long as they do not interfere with, nor put the other in danger (mentally, physically or spiritually). In order for a country to ensure the safety of citizens and their liberties, they must make sure they provide an environment that allows for balance. Since government (on both the national and local levels) tend to have more power to act in comparison to its citizens, it must first ensure that

it keeps itself as well as the citizens themselves in check from infringing upon one anothers fundamental personal rights and liberties protected by [] due process (Ginsberg, pg. 95). If a country allows its citizens to practice and produce their own methods of self-regulation, be they religious or secular, then they can allow the citizens to support their own liberties while the government acts as a line of defense in times of dispute and disagreement.
