Maasin Hosted PHILTA’s Tennis Clinic And Ranking Of Players

Maasin City, Southern Leyte-The Maasin City Sports Council under the auspices of
the City Govt,. and in partnership with the Maasin Lawn Tennis Club members has
hosted recently the Philippines Tennis Association’s(PHILTA) conduct on tennis
clinic and the ranking of players who have had participated already and have won
in various tennis competitions in the country.
This was the disclosure of Dominador Rojas, City Sports Coordinator, in an
interview at his office at the City Hall. He said that the principal
instructors/teachers involved PHILTA’s Berth Rene Mawaunal, Wendell Gojoco of the
Maasin City Sports Council and Cris Pateros of the Maasin Lawn Tennis Club.
The tennis clinic which was categorized into two, beginners and advanced,
accepted young tennis players from 6 up to 17, comprising a total of 69
participants.
Rojas revealed that tennis clinic for beginners were more on basic techniques,
while advanced were more on advanced techniques in playing tennis.
Basic techniques in tennis playing, the Sports Coordinator said, covered
stretching exercises, speed time reaction, endurance, agility, forehand and
backhand serving. The advanced techniques, he said, covered a wider range of
drilling techniques that would enhance and improve the skills of amateur players.
This could be achieved as they continue to practice regularly what they have
learned from a weeklong coachings.
The Sports Coordinator informed that at the new Maasin City Children’s Court,
formerly owned by the members of the Maasin Lawn Tennis Club, which was turned
over to the Maasin City Sports Council 4 months ago, was the training ground of
the erstwhile national tennis champion Ringo Navarrosa.
Navarrosa in his younger days as a Maasinhon tennis player has had won in a
series of tennis competitions in various age brackets in different places like
Hilongos,Baybay,Ormoc,Tacloban,Cebu and Manila.
He is the son of retired Engr. Antonio Navarrosa, a DPWH former District
Engineer of Southern Leyte.Several years ago, the young Navarrosa migrated to the
USA and has supported his study there as a tennis player under a scholarship
program in one of the US universities. However, he has decided to shift a course
in nursing and had graduated. He now works in one of the US hospitals together
with his wife who is also a nurse. He continues to play tennis when on off duties.
Meanwhile, the ranking of tennis players by PHILTA, Rojas further said was
participated in by players ages from 10 up to 18 years old. They came all the way
with shaperons, aside from Maasin, in places like Hilongos, Baybay, Sogod,
Tacloban and the CALABARZON area in Luzon.
He explained that the ranking of players here were based on a series of
previous winning stints from among each tennis player-participants. Prior to the
actual final ranking, he said, players from various aforementioned places were
having their games held at the new Maasin Lawn Tennis Club located at the new
reclamation area in brgy. Combado. Winners and placers categorized as 10-under,
12-under, 14-under, 16-under and 18-under were ranked in accordance with their
accumulative number of past wins and new wins during their MLTC competitions. He
clarified that the berthing notches (No.1, No.2, No.3, No. 4, No.5, etc.)were also
bracketed as winning players of either 10-under, 12-under, 14-under, 16-under or
