For designing any stepped drive first of all the following factors have to be decided : (a) Maximum output RPM (N max.), (6) Minimum output RPM (N min.), (c) Number of steps of the transference (n), (d) The manner of sub-division of steps, and (e) The number of stages in which the steps are to be obtained. In multipurpose machines the selection of speeds is very complex, as correct speed depends upon various factors, i.e the properties of material of job ; shape of cutting tools; form stability or wear resistance of tool materials ; type of operation performed and the process capability of machine. However in single purpose machine, the selection of particular speed depends upon the machining characteristics of that process only.- In the case of cylindrical work pieces, the cutting speed (Ve) is related to the diameter of the work and the spindle speed (N) by the relation Ve= DN/1000 m/mm (D=dia of job or cutter in mm) or Spindle speed, N=1000 V /D

From equation (1), the minimum speed (N min) of spindle is dependent upon the maximum diameter of the work that can be accommodated in the machine. It is however also dependent upon the minimum speed required for other operations like screwing or tapping. Again from equation (1), the maximum speed (N max.) is dependent upon (i) the greatest possible cutting speed (Ve), and (ii) when diameter is minimum possible. For design purposes,

value of minimum diameter is taken=h/8(h being the height of centres above the bed). Further from equation (1), it is also obvious that for constant value of Ve, as the diameter increases the speed N should decrease and vice versa. The output spindle speeds generally form a series which may be in arithmetical progression (A.P.), geometrical progression (G.P.), or logarithmic progression (L.P.). It is now obvious that for constant N, the relation between Ve and D is a straight line. Graphically, the relation between Vt, D and N is represented by Ray Diagram shown in Fig. 11.13.

We will now study as to which of the series is most suited in all respects for machine tools. Let us assume that a bar is to be machined on a lathe and say its dia D varies from some minimum dia to some max. dia. Assuming V, to be constant, the variation of spindle speed with change in job diameter is shown in Fig. 11.14 i.e. initially as dia of job increases the speed change is not much but afterward , even for small changes in diameter the spindle speed changes rapidly. This condition is fulfilled by G.P. series ; wheareas A.P, series follows a straight line and cannot fulfil this requirement. Thus G.P. series is preferred as it can provide more number of ranges of speed at lower range.

Christy says: July 27, 2012 at 10:10 pm Upgrading my shop by buying a cnc mill so I can produce in house. However, I want to be able to mill steel, stainless, titanium and aluminum. The steel and titanium I know are lower rmp speeds for milling due to hardness. What is the minimum spindle rpm allowable so that I can buy a mill that will be capable of milling all of the above listed material? Reply

Opal Morrill says: August 1, 2012 at 8:57 am I just finished my first year of mechanical engineering at college. Theres a paid graphic arts internship that Im interested in and can easily get. Getting a mechanical engineering-related internship or job would be much harder because I live in NYC and things are competitive. How much should I worry about getting engineeringrelated experience in my first summer? Reply

Christy says: August 14, 2012 at 5:11 pm Im going to be using a CNC router to flycut some MDF and I want to create a slightly rough surface. One machine I am considering buying has a spindle rotation speed range of 6,000 to 24,000 RPM. Does anyone know if it is somehow possible to set the machine to cut at a slower rate? Do-n-it-4U. Re your answer. If I use a dimmer control, will it reduce the router travel speed as well? As I see it, for me to create a rough surface I either have to increase the travel engraving speed or reduce the spindle speed rate. Obvioulsy being able to do both would be ideal. However, if by slowing down the spindle rotation rate by using the dimmer, you also slow down the travel speed then I would imagine it would pretty much cancel the overall benefit. Reply

Anne Felton says: August 22, 2012 at 11:22 pm I need to propose an idea regarding a mechanical mechanism that can be designed in multiple ways(e.g chain, belt or gear etc) to accomplish the same thing. Its like, I have to propose 5 different design for the same purpose. The device can be for any purpose (e.g marine, industrial, construction etc). Any mechanical device is welcomed as suggestion. It would be helpful if you guys can think little bit for me. Thanks. Reply

Gloria Hester says: August 22, 2012 at 11:56 pm I recently started going to my schools weight room to workout. There are so many machines, though, I just dont know where to start. There are treadmills and probably 50+ weight machines. My goal is to burn fat, lose weight, and tone my legs stomach and butt. However, I definitley dont want to bulk up. I end up wandering around, indecisive about which machine to use, so I need to set up a routine. Any help?
