Parquet
What is parquet? The word literally means "wooden floor" Parquet is a collective for many different kinds of wooden floors. Some examples are; traditional parquet (tapis or bourgogne), mosaic, planks, woodblock, stab parquet.
General
Radial Tangential
Growth rings going across the Growth rings going across the thickness of the plank widht of the plank no distortion of the wood bigger chance to distortion mechanical fixing (nails) is mechanical fixing is easy difficult How the radial and tangential directions of the tissue are arranged in a piece of wood has a dramatic effect on its response to shrinkage and expansions.

General
To be considered is the most important characteristic of all: after wood has been dried and converted into useable parts from the tree, it changes size according to the amount of moisture in the air. Wood is a hygroscopic material which means that wood will adapt to the circumstances in the environment. If the surrounding air contains more moisture than the wood, it will take up moisture until the moisture content of air and wood are the same. This moisture exchange is reversible. If wood contains more moisture than the surrounding air, it will give off moisture until the moisture equilibrium of air and wood is reached. The net result is shrinkage of the wood.

General
Quite often moisture from the subfloor is not the cause of all problems but the Relative Humidity is (R.H.) Relative humidity is a measure of the amount of water in the air compared with the amount of water the air can hold at a certain temperature and air pressure. If it rains the R.H. will increase. When it freezes the R.H. will decrease. This means that the R.H. changes by season or even by day. The R.H. can be checked by means of a hygrometer. Parquet is dried to approx. 9%-11%, which is a typical moisture content of wood in equilibrium with indoor air humidity (50%-65%). According to table 1 the moisture content of wood, at a R.H. of 55%-65% and a temperature of 20 C, is 9%-11%.
General
At a low R.H. wood will give off moisture until the moisture equilibrium of air and wood is reached. The net result is shrinkage of the parquet. At a high R.H. wood will take up moisture until the moisture content of air and wood are the same. The wood will expand in its width and thickness but not in its length. The degree in which wood expands is depending on several aspects. Beside width and thickness it also depends on the kind of wood.
General
In the following table can be seen that when the R.H. variates between 55 and 65%, the warping (expansion/shrinking) of oak is 0,47%. In other words, at variations between 55-65%, the difference will be 47 mm. at 1 meter (in width). Variations between 55-65% is ideal and not realistic. More realistic are variations between 50-70%. In that case the warping of oak is 0,99% or 1 cm per meter. In a room of 4 meter wide the expansion or shrinking will be 4 cm. With all its consequences
warping
RV55-65 0,47%
warping
RV50-70 0,99%
warping
RV40-80 2,16%
This is only for oak. There are kinds of wood, such as beech, that are more sensitive to moisture and will shrink or expand more
General
Mainly oak (approx. 90%) Big share for solid wood More often direct bonding to the concrete subfloor Big share for 2KPU Technical sale, continuous technical support needed
Parquet types
Mosaic
Herringbone
very stable (expands hardly or not) small size; can expand in every direction hardly moisture sensitive

Parquet types
11
Parquet types
Block flooring: 6mm or 9mm
Brick Pattern Half Bond Herringbone (eg. single, double, square, diagonal etc.) Diagonal Basket Square Basket block floors with a two block border
Placed on a wooden subfloor (chipboard, particle size chipboard etc.) Combination of bonding and mechanical fixing Waterborn adhesive will do
12
Parquet types
Planks Not stable, warping because of wood dimensions and humidity (Extreme) shrinkage or expansion is to be expected Warping such as cupping or springing may occur because of the fact that dimensional changes are not equal in all directions Shrink and expansion of timber causes very large forces on subfloor and adhesion To be bonded only with PU or MS based adhesives
13
Nervous/Moisture sensitive wood Maple & Cherry: very sensitive to humidity! Beech: extremely moisture sensitive; large deformations Tropical wood types: often high oil content and sensitive to water
ex:Afzelia: stains in combination with water ex Weng: very difficult to bond with adhesive
For smaller format oak flooring, Dispersion or Alcohol based adhesive can be used
Always use MS or 2K- PU adhesive. MS is highly elastic, accommodates very nervous wood
14
Multilayer Parquet
multilayer parquet, parquet panels composed of two or more layers of wood (or wood-based material), with a top layer of hardwood
15
Subfloors: Humidity
Moisture = 95% of all problems in installing wood flooring! Subfloor has to be perfectly dry - Max 2% residual humidity in screed - Max 0,5% in anhydrite/calciumsulfate based subfloors
Humidity must be measured before installing parquet !

Art. 112923 Tin 13kg Traditional solvent based adhesive Solvent needs to evaporate, subfloor should be porous
25
Dispersion Adhesive
+
Economic Easy to work with cleaning with water no solvents 1K system long open time
Only on porous substrates Less suitable for direct adhesion on concrete. Contains water
Best in combination with nails Only for smaller parquet sizes Not for tropical wood and beech. (water!) not for water sensitive substrates
26
27
2K PU adhesive
+
Very high end strength. For porous and non porous substrates. Also for difficult, tropical wood types. Also for large parquet sizes. Suitable for direct adhesion on concrete.
Causes staining on the hands. Needs to be mixed, not ready to use. Limited open time because of chemical reaction.

Easier to work with. No bubble formation, no glue out of the joints. Universal adhesion on all substrates. Exceptional adhesion on smooth surfaces. Environmental friendly: no danger labeling. No isocyanates Does not stain hands
Prepolymerised, stiffer and difficult to spread out. Polyurethane curing reaction causes bubble formation (CO2). Porous substrates need a primer much quicker. Danger labeling: contains isocyanate. Chemical reaction causes black stains on hands.
35
Ready to use 1-component system. Unlimited pot-life, bucket can be closed & used again. Exceptional adhesion on smooth surfaces. Environmental friendly: no danger labeling, no isocyanates (EC-1 approval) Does not stain hands. High elastic adhesive film for optimal distribution of forces.
2 component system, needs mixing. Bucket needs to be used within 30-60 min. Porous substrates have to be primered Danger labeling: contains isocyanate. Chemical reaction causes black stains on hands. Harder adhesive film, more sensitive to break and pulling loose from concrete floor.
