1. ECONOMIC SECTORS
People work in different economic sectors. There are three sectors:

PRIMARY SECTOR

SECONDARY SECTOR

TERTIARY SECTOR

1.1. The primary sector

This sector includes jobs which obtain resources from nature. Workers in the primary sector produce products or extract them from the ground. These products are called raw materials.

Agriculture produces crops or fruits and vegetables (rice, olives, wheat and so on)

Livestock farming produces animals for their milk, meat and leather

Fishing Provides us with food.

Mining industry extracts important natural resources stone, coal and oil from the ground.

1.2. The secondary sector

This sector includes jobs which take the raw materials that are produced in the primary sector and turn them into products that people can use. These products are called finished or semi-finished products Most manufactured products are made in a factory. There are three most important types of industry: Primary industries transform raw materials into other materials ( Ex. Metallurgical and chemical industries) Equipment and machinery industries produce tools and machinery that other industries need ( Ex. Robots) Consumer industries manufacture products to sell directly to consumers ( Ex. Food, textiles, furniture)

Another important activity is the construction industry. This industry builds houses, bridges or motorways.

The tertiary sector or service sector

Workers provide a service. The services can be organised into different groups Land transport: Products are transported in trains Sea transport: Merchandise is transported on large cargo ships Air transport: Products are transported in aeroplanes.

Transport: lorries or on Workers carry people and goods from one place to another

Tourism: Workers look after people when they go on holiday

Beach tourism: Tourists can enjoy the Sun, sand and sea Adventure tourism: Tourist s do exciting outdoor activities Rural tourism: Tourists visit villages and the countrysides. Cultural tourism: Tourists can visit monuments and museums

Education: Workers help us to learn

Health services: Workers look after our health

Administration: People work in offices

Trade Workers sell us products in shops, supermarkets, stores and so on

Domestic trade: Products are made and sold within the same country Foreign trade: Products are bought or sold from other countries

Export: Products are sold to other countries Import: Products are bought from the other countries

The services can be . Privates Public: The governments control these services

In Spain five per cent of people work in the primary sector In Spain, thirty per cent of people work in the secondary sector (This sector includes industry and construction. Industry is concentrated in large metropolitan areas) In Spain, sixty-five per cent of people work in the tertiary sector
