Lab Topic Description

In this lab the attendee will experience how Data Director

simplifies management in vSphere for both DBAs and vSphere Admins. This lab will take them through DBaaS capabilities such as self-service provisioning, cloning and upgrading Oracle and vPostgres databases.

The time it takes to provision a new VM to hold your applications

has been dramatically reduced by the introduction of virtualization and further reduced by the introduction of cloud offerings build on top of virtualization. VMware vFabric Data Director, utilizes virtualization to create and access your databases in a comparative way, bringing the same benefits in the data layer.

The Solution Scenario

Rainpole is facing an increased challenge in provisioning and

managing all the databases supporting their growing global SaaS offerings.

Rainpole would also like to try out Open Source alternatives to

their existing databases.

Rainpole wants to gain the same benefits managing their

databases, as they have experienced virtualizing their servers and built an IaaS infrastructure.

Rainpole is testing VMware vFabric Data Director because it

gives them self service provisioning and unified management of heterogenous databases.

10

The Lab Experience

The lab will start with vCenter and show how the virtual resources are allocated to different logical tiers of users providing multitenant management

11

The Lab Experience

We will then drill down into the management of database templates, users, user rights, backups, etc.

12

The Lab Experience

Finally we take a look at how we can work with vPostgres and Oracle databases. We will provision, clone, update and manipulate resources etc.

13

Constructing the Lab

Obstacles encountered during lab build out

Straight forward vApp import, but pay attention to the network

configuration. DD uses multiple networks to separate different types of traffic

Take care if you downsize the vApp VMs to save resources, for
purposes such as demos setups, strange things might happen :o)

vPostgres templates are easy to import and prepare, but Oracle

templates require a little Linux CLI knowledge to install the Oracle bits. An network fileshare makes the installation quite easy.

Large datastores are preferred due to the way DD reserves

resources for the tenants

Dont be cheap with compute resources reserved for DD Dont mess with the VMs from within vCenter!
