Course Introduction
Knee replacement surgery is internationally a well developed specialty in orthopaedic practice, however for developing countries such as Pakistan, it is a speciality still in its infancy as far as skill development and surgeon training is concerned. Due to increasing patient awareness about the possibility of joint replacement surgery as an alternative to conventional non-operative approach to arthritis of the knee, more and more patients attending orthopaedic outpatient clinics are now opting for joint replacement. To meet patient expectations, performing an accurate Knee arthroplasty with predictable results is a pre requisite many young orthopaedic surgeons aspire to attain. The 10th primary TKA Live and Cadaveric Surgery course is designed to meet the training needs of consultant orthopaedic surgeons who are performing knee replacements in smaller numbers and for those young orthopaedic surgeons who aspire to pursue adult reconstructive surgery as a career. The course features interactive lectures and workshops in smaller groups delivered by highly qualied and experienced international and national faculty that would help the participant in developing a better understanding of the subject and develop cognitive skills for arthroplasty at the same time. The course comprehensively covers all aspects of Primary Knee Arthroplasty from Indications, patients selection, Preoperative counseling and assessment through intricacies of the surgical procedure such as surgical exposures, bony cuts, selection of implant and correction of mechanical problems during TKA. The course will also include sessions on postoperative management, rehabilitation and possible problems encountered. This will also be accompanied by live surgery demonstrations. The most exciting part of the course is the hands on sawbone and cadaveric surgery workshops. They are specically aimed at development of cognitive skills, improve understanding of instruments and inventory as well as clarify concepts in smaller group discussion with faculty.
