Interim I

TRIVIA REVIEW GAME

1. What is the geologic time scale?

A record of the earth geologic events and life forms

in earth history

2. What are rocks made out of?

Minerals

Organic material
Molten material Fragments of other rocks

3. A rock that contains an economically useful mineral is called a

Ore

4. What is the law of superposition?

States that in horizontal layers of sedimentary rock,

each layer of sedimentary rock is older than the layer above it. OLDEST IN ON THE BOTTOM & THE YOUNGEST IS ON TOP.
Gives the relative age of rock.

5. What is the process for creating a sedimentary rock?

Weathering

Erosion
Deposition Compaction

Cementation

End of Round 1

6. Describe 5 ways to conserve energy?

Use fans in the summer

Use blankets in the winter

Turn of lights when you leave a room Car pool to work

Unplug items when not in use

7. What are fossil fuels?

An energy rich substance formed for the remains of

once living things. Coal, oil, and natural gas.

8. List the renewable energy resources.

Hydroelectricity- MOST USED

Wind energy
Solar energy Biomass

Geothermal energy
Hydrogen ** Nuclear energy is

NOT

renewable!!!!!!!!!!!!

9. How do burning fossil fuels affect the environment?

It creates the Greenhouse Effect by heating up our

atmosphere. Burning fossil fuels releases CFC and pollutions into the air we breathe.

10. Compare the position of simple organisms to more complex organisms in sedimentary rock layers

Old rocks contains SIMPLER organisms and younger

rock layers contain more COMPLEX organisms.

End of Round 2

11. How is wind created?

Wind is created when the sun heats different

surfaces of the earth unevenly. FACT: We would have no wind if we did not have the sun. THE SUN PRODUCES WIND.

12. Describe 5 ways to conserve water.

Install low flow toilets

Turn of water when you are brushing your teeth.

Take short showers

13. What are the three types of rocks/

Sedimentary

Metamorphic
Igneous

14. How are igneous rocks created?

When molten material such as magma and lava

hardens on or below Earths surface.

15. How are metamorphic rocks created?

By extreme heat from the mantle and pressure from

the many layer of rocks above it. It froms deep inside of Earths crust!!!

End of Round 3

16. List uses of rocks

Building supplies

Tools
Counter tops Floors

Gravel
Cleaning materials

17. What conditions are needed to make igneous rock , sedimentary rock, and metamorphic rock?
To make igneous rock you need to melt existing

rock and then volcanic activity needs to occur. To make sedimentary rock existing rocks need to go through the processes of (weathering, erosion, deposition, compaction, cementation). To make metamorphic rock you need to add heat and pressure to existing rock.

18. How are rocks classified?

By how their origin, how and where they formed.

19. What are the 5 methods of soil conservation?

contour plowing

conservation plowing
terracing Planting crops

crop rotation fallow ( leaving a field empty)

20. What is the difference between observations and inferences?

Observations- using one or more of your senses

(sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch) to gather information about the world.

Ms. Shaver has on a blue shirt. Ms. Shaver is holding a red pen. Ms. Shaver is tall.

Inferences- Explaining or interpreting an

observation

Ms. Shaver like the color blue. Ms. Shaver writes using a red pen. Ms. Shaver has tall parents.
