conservatory

CityDance School & Conservatory provides over 600 students, ages 4 to 19, with high-level dance training including the CityDance Conservatory, an intensive pre-professional training program that prepares young dancers for professional careers. Bringing together leading modern and contemporary techniques with a ballet program rooted in Vaganova principles, CityDances curriculum is designed to develop the next generation of dance performers and innovators. Located at the Music Center at Strathmore, and now with a fourth studio at the nearby The Academy of the Holy Cross, close to 100 classes are taught each week in beautiful, large, light-filled studios. CityDances faculty consists of highly trained teachers, choreographers and coaches. Through the Guest Artist Program, CityDance brings professional dance artists and companies from around the world to the school each year. They lead master classes, teach professional-level choreography, create new repertory and perform with and for conservatory students in a wide range of genres, including contemporary, ballet, jazz, hip hop, Bollywood, Sri Lankan and Afro-Fusion.

community programs
CityDance Community Programs are offered at over 30 community-based sites in the regions most under-resourced neighborhoods providing free performances, in-school and after-school programs, and summer camps to over 5,000 students each year. DREAM As the arts become less accessible in our schools, DREAM reaches into our neighborhoods, giving back to our students what is fundamental to any childs future- experience and participation in the arts. Now in its tenth year, the four-hour a week after-school program is offered to 120 students in grades third to eighth at six DC public schools. DREAM employs the principles of Advancing Youth Development a nationally recognized model for instilling youth with the skills necessary for success in life. Students take field trips to professional performances; receive over 100 hours of dance instruction in multiple genres; perform at a Washington Wizards half-time; and produce and choreograph their own end of year performance highlighting their community service projects. The DREAM Alumni program provides graduates of the DREAM program opportunities to mentor younger students; scholarships for continued dance study; and additional performance opportunities.

In the Fall of 2011, CityDance completed Phases I and II of a three-phase project to transform its largest dance studio (Studio 405) at the Music Center at Strathmore into a dual-purpose space: professional dance studioby-day and state-of-the-art BlackBox theater-by-night. In concept, design, and operation, Studio 405 represents the most current technology and best practices of sustainable theatrical elements. The studio is now fully functioning, intimate, affordable and visually stunning a rare combination. Building this theater is helping CityDance to accomplish its mission of providing the highest quality contemporary dance performance and education programs in the region, while simultaneously creating a space that will benefit generations of Montgomery County students, artists and audience members alike.
