The course will examine how financial markets and financial institutions channel funds from savers to entities in need of funding, the specific role of different financial instruments in financing of the economy, how they are priced, the inherent fragility of the financial system through systemic risk and the influence of the financial regulators and the central banks on the financial structure. We will explain financial structure of businesses' external financing within an asymmetric information framework, asset pricing through arbitrage theory, interest rate formation through the demand-supply framework of loanable funds, the implementation of monetary policy within a reserve model. Specific topics also covered: Securitization and the very complex structured products; Repos; Shortselling; Subprime mortgage crisis and its propagation; Post-crisis new financial regulation including Basal III requirements (RWA) , funds transfer pricing (FTP), liquidity risk; Asset bubbles; Quantitative easing; European debt crisis.

Financial Risk Management


Ran a simulation analysis (4 Qtr. game) assuming the role of corporate/central treasury to manage a portfolio of fixed income securities and calculate the necessary funding requirements for government authorities. The management of interest rate risk is the focus and reviewing exposures to formulate a strategy based on economic scenarios. Established view on the direction rates will move in the coming quarter. Topics include the (FX) foreign exchange market, predicting exchange rate movements, hedging exposures with various derivative and other alternatives (ETD & OTC), the GFC and the current European events as well as the challenges of raising funds internationally and the process and documents of international trade (Counter Party Clearing / CCP, Letters of Credit (L/C), Draft, & Bill of Lading. Measuring the risks and cost for unhedged positions vs. money market hedges, futures, and options and making recommendations regarding the best alternative. Strategies to using Cross Currency Swaps, Interest Rate Swaps, and Triangular Arbitrage.

Entrepreneurship and Ventures


Recognizing, evaluating and exploiting new business opportunities, thinking outside the box to produce new and better solutions to problems, breaking new ground away from the mainstream way of doing things, and packaging things in a business model that makes money to keep financing the venture. Selected as one of 4 students to lead a social entrepreneurship project in Bogota, Colombia as an improved model of humanitarianism. I proposed the creation of an entrepreneurship competition and training workshops. Both of which were implemented during our week in Bogota, Colombia. We utilized Osterwalders Business Model Generation and Canvas for expanding the skillsets of our selected entrepreneurs. In order to bridge the gap between local businesses and the entrepreneurs a closing ceremony was commenced as a charity event and monetary awards were given to the best teams. During the project we also had the dual objective of strengthen UQs international presence and creating a collaborative effort between Javeriana University and UQ in entrepreneurship.

Advanced Corporate Finance


Evaluate whether a proposed corporate transaction is in the best interests of the firms owners. Perform a discounted cash flow valuation and analyse its sensitivity to alternative assumptions underlying its cash flows and discount rate. Estimate a firms weighted average cost of capital. Be able to critically analyse the relation between capital structure, payout policy, the cost of capital and value. Analyse the impact of various risk management policies using forward, futures and options contracts on a firms cash flows; and estimate the intrinsic value of those contracts. Understand the processes involved in mergers and acquisitions, and evaluate the value creating potential of a specific transaction. Identify sectors and groupings of companies that might be viable business targets. Critically evaluate reasons to acquire (Synergies, Diversification, EPS Growth, and Managerial Motives) and model the different methods in mergers such as cash, stock-swaps, and leveraged buyout. Proper due diligence and financial/valuation modelling is key.

Econometrics
Econometrics deals with measurement of economic phenomena (and making related predictions) using statistical methods. Topics covered include: Economic models & role of econometrics, linear regression (Simple & Multiple), hypothesis testing, specification testing, dummy variables, simple dynamic models and simple cointegration models, panel data, testing for misspecification and autocorrelated errors, identifying multicollinearity, estimating models with heteroskedastic errors, nonstationary time series data, and computing marginal responses and elasticity from models with non-linear variables.
