INFORMATION FROM THE APPLICATION ENGINEERS AT WAUKESHA ENGINE/WAUKESHA POWER SYSTEMS No. WED10/06
FILTER CARTRIDGES MOUNTING OF LUBE OIL THERMOSTATS WITH OIL COOLER OPTION CENTRIFUGAL SEPARATOR
Figure 2 APPLICATIONS Power Generation and Cogeneration with Auxiliary Cooling Water temperature at 45C or 55C For applications with a maximum LT water inlet temperature of 45C or 55C, the Waukesha lube oil cooler should be chosen as this provides a compact, simple and clean oil system. The Waukesha lube oil cooler ts in the lube oil module. It has a capacity that is limited to a maximum coolant temperature of 45C or 55C. The total engine cooling system for these applications consists of two (2) cooling circuits: the HT circuit (jacket water and CAC HT for rst stage in series) which includes the thermostats; and the LT circuit (lube oil and CAC LT for second stage in parallel) which includes LT water circuit thermostats. With the option for the Waukesha integral mounted lube oil cooler the lube oil module contains the lube oil thermostats and LT water circuit thermostat. The oil cooling circuit is integrated in the engine and requires no connections from the customer. The customer can connect his cooling water supply to the engine as shown in Figure 3 and must supply the correct quantity and quality of LT and HT water.

ApplicationNotes
The connections for the lube oil are shown in Figure 4. The customer must supply the temperature control for the lube oil and lube oil cooler (see Figure 5). The required temperatures and the heat data can be obtained by contacting the Waukesha Application Engineering department.

DESIGN OF THE CUSTOMER SUPPLIED OIL COOLER The customer supplied lube oil cooler must be designed to cool the lube oil return temperature to the engine to 75C (167F). Consult Waukeshas Application Engineering Department for lube oil ow and heat data and for applications requiring higher lube oil temperatures. CLEANLINESS Cleanliness is a very important item for an engine and in particular for the oil system. Debris left in the oil system can destroy the engine. Special care has to be taken that the customer supplied Oil Cooler and its connecting components are clean and free of welding scale and other debris. Black iron or steel pipes should be used to carry the oil. Galvanized or zinc pipes should not be used. The sulphur content of the oil will react with the galvanization and zinc metals forming sludge. After welding the pipes must be pickled to remove all welding scale. The pipes then must be rinsed thoroughly to remove the acid and dried before connecting to the engine. Pipes that are not used immediately must be preserved. Reference Waukeshas Form 1091 Installation of Waukesha Engines and Enginators Chapter 5 Lubrication System for more information on cleanliness of piping.

Figure 4 Cogeneration Applications with Process Water Temperatures above 55C and Customer Supplied Lube Oil Cooler For applications where the customer has a need for lube oil cooler heat at temperatures with process water return temperatures above 55C (131F) the customer must supply a lube oil cooler with sufcient capacity to cool the lube oil. The customer supplied lube oil cooler must be off engine mounted. The engine cooling system for these applications exists of three (3) circuits, HT (jacket water and CAC HT for rst stage in series), lube oil and LT (CAC LT for second stage only). The HT and CAC water circuit are equipped with thermostats and connected as in the prior section.
