Library Lesson Plans Jessica Prutting ILS 562 Module Six Assignment 1 Objective: SW develop listening skills through read alouds. LMS will read/sing Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes by Eric Litwin. (Song found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nUubMSfIs-U ) SW sing along with LMS after modeling first part of the song, changing colors as the story progresses. LMS and classroom teacher will facilitate. SW browse and borrow (board books only!) with assistance of LMS/classroom teachers/paras. Objective: SW become familiar with the procedure of shelf markers. LMS will read The Shelf Elf Helps Out by Jackie Hopkins. LMS will emphasize that each book in the library has a home and using shelf markers ensures that books stay in their place or home. LMS will model correct use of shelf marker and have student volunteers model. SW model correct use of shelf markers for LMS and/or classroom teacher before being allowed to browse (top of bookshelf books only!) and borrow. Objective: SW become familiar with the location of materials within the library. LMS will lead discussion to activate PK for sections of the library, then create a list with students on smartboard, adding sections omitted by students. SW complete a LMC Scavenger Hunt with a partner where they must locate sections of the library and record answers on a worksheet. LMS and classroom teacher will facilitate. When completed, students may browse and borrow. Objective: SW be able to locate texts in non-fiction section using Dewey call numbers. LMS will activate PK about non-fiction section by asking how the books in that section are different from other sections in the LMC, then lead a discussion about Dewey call numbers and how they break down nonfiction topics. SW be given a Dewey call number on an index card and be asked to locate that book within the non-fiction section before being allowed to browse and borrow LMS and classroom teacher will check student

Objective: SW be able to use online catalog to place holds, create resource lists, and recommend books. LMS will activate PK about OPAC Destiny and its functions, then introduce 3 new functions: placing a hold, creating a resource list and recommending books. LMS will model these procedures on smartboard with classroom teacher as volunteer and with student input for books to place on hold, recommend, etc. SW use laptops to log onto OPAC and perform one of the newly learned tasks before being allowed to browse and borrow. LMS and classroom teacher will assist students as necessary, monitor for understanding. Objective: SW be able to locate and check out online resources/e-books. LMS will inform students that now that they are in 4th grade they can borrow kindles and e-books independently. LMS will use smartboard to model how to use OPAC/LMC website to locate and check out ebooks and request kindles. SW use laptops to log onto OPAC and locate e-books before being allowed to browse and borrow. LMS and classroom teacher will assist students as necessary and monitor for understanding. Objective: SW be able to evaluate online resources. LMS will read But I Read it on the Internet! by Toni Buzzeo. LMS will lead discussion about validity of internet resources, give examples of trustworthy sources (.edu, .gov, etc) and ways to evaluate a website (author, recent updates, etc.) SW use laptops to perform an internet search about a topic of their choice and use a website evaluation rubric to prove the validity of a website of their chosing. LMS and classroom teacher will assist students as necessary and monitor for understanding. When finished, students can browse and borrow.
