Lesson Plan 3

Making Paper
Objective Rationale

Class: Year 2 Stage 1

The purpose of this lesson plan is to show For students to gain the understanding of the children the basis of recycling through structure of paper and why it is recyclable by breaking it down and reconstructing the paper. recycling their own paper.

Outcomes
Knowledge and Understanding Earth and Space identifies ways that people use science in their daily lives to care for the environment and Earths resources ST19NE identifies ways everyday materials can be physically changed and combined for a particular purpose ST1-12NM

Indicators
Describe ways in which people use science knowledge and skills in their daily lives to care for the environment and use resources sustainably (ACSHE022, ACSHE035) Explore how some everyday materials can be physically changed by actions such as bending, twisting, stretching, squashing and heating (ACSSU018)

Resources:
Scrap paper (preferably white) Seeds (of choice) Large paper cups Planting soil Water Blender Large plastic tub Sponges 2 teaspoons liquid starch (to stop ink from running)

Key Scientific Knowledge (KSK)

Paper is collected then transported to a recycling plant. The collected paper is sorted into different grades, like, corrugated boxes, and newspaper. Different paper makes different recycled products. Paper is placed into a pulper, filled with hot water and chemicals to break the paper down into its cellulose form called fibers. This pulp is filtered and cleaned to remove contaminants - plastics, glue and staples. The top layer of ink is removed. The clean pulp is mixed with water and chemicals and is sprayed onto a screen. Water is drained and the fibers begin to bond together. The finished product is wound up into large rolls, then resold to consumers.

Overview of the teaching and learning experience

Start with the YouTube link below: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5gWv_bkq7UI Ask the students: (ST1-12NM) - Where does paper come from? - Explain how does making recycled paper help the environment? (ACSHE022, ACSHE035)

Preface: students will look at paper through a magnifying glass to see the fibers. Then they will rip a piece to see clearer the fibers underneath a magnifying glass.
1. Each student will rip apart the scrap paper into small pieces and place in the big plastic tub. 2. Fill the tub with warm water, enough so that the water soaks the paper evenly. Add about 2 teaspoons of liquid starch. 3. Each student will place two scoops of the mixture into a blender, and blend the mixture until smooth. 4. Students will press the mixture along the sides of the cup to make a mold, squeezing out as much water as possible. Sponge away as much water as possible. Let the pulp mold completely dry overnight. (ACSSU018) 5. Take the paper cup out. Then scoop planting soil into their cup and place a seed in the soil and water them. 6. Explain that when their plant sprout and ready to be planted, the entire cup can go into the ground. Discuss how the cup decomposes and that the class has completed the recycling loop by returning the nutrients from the paper back to the soil (ST19NE).

Extension

Simplification

To extend this lesson have students draw/write a diagram of the steps to make paper.

To simplify have the student skips steps 1-3.
