How to Prepare a Computer to Host the Configuration Manager Virtual Machine

You can use the following information to prepare a computer to host the System Center 2012 Configuration Manager virtual machine. The following are some considerations about the computer that hosts the Configuration Manager virtual machine: We recommend that you use a computer with a Dual-Core Pentium 4, 2 GHz (x64) processor or greater. We recommend that you have at least 30 GB of hard disk space available for the virtual machine. You must have at least 4 GB of memory available for the virtual machine. Install and configure one of the supported operating systems for Hyper-V hosts for System Center 2012 Service Pack 1 (SP1). For more information, see System Requirements: HyperV Hosts. This specific preconfigured VHD was created on, and exported from, Hyper-V running on a Windows 8 client computer. It will import easiest on a compatible version of Hyper-V. Install and configure the Hyper-V role in Windows. For more information about configuring Hyper-V, see Getting to Know Hyper-V: A Walkthrough from Initial Setup to Common Scenarios.

To prepare the computer to host the Configuration Manager virtual machine, do the following:

You can use the following procedure to extract the Configuration Manager VHD file. To extract the VHD file 1. Download the self-extracting SC2012_SP1_ConfigMgr_EVALVHD.exe file and all the .rar files to the computer that is configured with Hyper-V. 2. Place all the downloaded files into the same folder. 3. Double-click the self-extracting SC2012_SP1_ConfigMgr_EVALVHD file to begin the wizard that extracts the VHD file. 4. Review the software license terms, and then click Accept. 5. Provide the folder location where you want to save the extracted VHD file, and then click Extract. 6. After the wizard finishes, navigate to the folder that you specified, and confirm that the VHD file has been extracted. The VHD file is named SC2012_SP1_ConfigMgr_EVALVHD.vhd. For the next steps, see How to Create the Virtual Machine to Run Configuration Manager.

How to Import the Virtual Machine to Run Configuration Manager

You can use the following procedure to import the virtual machine to run Configuration Manager by using Hyper-V Manager. You will only be able to import this virtual machine directly on a computer running Hyper-V on either Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012. If you are using HyperV on a Windows Server 2008 R2 computer, you will not be able to import this virtual machine directly and will need to manually create a new virtual machine and attach the .vhd. Membership in the local Administrators group, or equivalent, on the computer that you are configuring is the minimum required to complete this procedure. To import the virtual machine to run Configuration Manager 1. On the computer on which Hyper-V is installed, start Hyper-V Manager. 2. In Hyper-V Manager, connect to the appropriate Hyper-V server computer. 3. In the Action pane, click Import Virtual Machine. 4. On the Before You Begin page, click Next. 5. On the Locate Folder page, specify the folder that you downloaded and extracted the preconfigured VHD to, and then click Next. 6. On the Select Virtual Machine page, click Next to import the System Center 2012 Configuration Manager SP1 Evaluation VHD. 7. On the Choose Import Type page, select the appropriate option (the default option of Register the virtual machine in-place (use the existing unique ID) is appropriate for most imports, and then click Next. 8. The virtual machine is imported. When complete, on the Completing Import Wizard page, click Finish to create the virtual machine. 9. In Hyper-V Manager, right-click the virtual machine that you just imported, and then click Start. 10. Right-click the virtual machine that you just created, and then click Connect. 11. For the next steps, see How to Run Configuration Manager on the Virtual Machine.
