Thanksgiving luncheon is November 19; register today!


Sign up today for the annual Thanksgiving Luncheon set for 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 19, at the Romulus Senior Center. Tickets are $4.50 per person. Seating is limited. Enjoy a wonderful meal and give thanks with friends. The menu will feature turkey, Roses Rice, mashed potatoes with gravy, green bean casserole, stuffing, dessert and beverage. There will be special door prizes and entertainment by singer Stuart Kerr. For tickets, call the Senior Center at (734) 955-4120.

Romulus Health and Wellness Fair is November 14


Hundreds of area residents are expected to participate in an annual Health and Wellness Fair from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, November 14, at the Romulus Senior Center, 36525 Bibbins. The event targets senior citizens, but is open to people of all ages from Romulus and other communities, said Senior Center Director Rose Swidan. The day will feature resources and helpful information from a variety of vendors. There will be blood-pressure checks, blood-sugar screenings and flu shots. Many of the offerings are free. There will be raffles and prizes. A big addition to this years Health and Wellness Fair will be the Wayne County Health on Wheels mobile unit, which will provide free health screenings. The county and local health providers will provide dental exams and tests for HIV/AIDs, body mass index, blood pressure, cancer, cholesterol and stroke risk, among others. To date, representatives the following vendors also are scheduled to attend the Health and Wellness Fair: Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Michigan The Senior Alliance (TSA), which will promote healthy-eating habits in the Better Choices for Your Health Program Beltone Hearing Care Center of Downriver, which will discuss hearing aid products Tender Care of Michigan nursing home, which will talk about available services The Information Center, which will educate seniors on new and existing services provided by the agency Meijer, which will provide flu shots and pneumonia vaccines. (Please wear loose fitting clothes that allow access to the upper arm. Bring proof of insurance and/or proof of Medicaid/Medicare.) Bingo is played at Noon Mondays and Wednesdays at the Senior Center. The fee is two bingo cards for 25 cents. Thanks to our sponsors. Tender Care will provide pizza and pop on Nov. 11. Mission Home Health will provide pizza and pop on November 20.

Game Days & Exercise


Members of the Romulus Senior Center can play games and exercise throughout the week: Bingo is played at noon Mondays and Wednesdays. Bunco is played at noon Tuesdays. Pinochle and other games are played during Wednesday Fun Days. Game Day is scheduled for noon Thursdays. Pokeno is played at noon Fridays. A stress-free chair exercise class begins at 9:30 a.m. Thursdays. To register, call the Center at (734) 955-4120. Seniors who enjoy quilting and each others company gather at 6 p.m. Thursdays.

3 free new classes: Crochet, Ceramics and Candy Making


Three new free classes will be offered to seniors during November: A Ceramics Class is scheduled for 1 to 3:30 p.m. Monday, November 4. A Candy-Making Class is scheduled for 1 to 3:30 p.m. Monday, November 18. A Crochet Class is scheduled for 1 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, November 26. Senior Center Director Rose Swidan said the classes have been scheduled due to requests by seniors. She said each class will be held one day a month, depending on popularity. Motor City Casino Trip


Romulus seniors will travel to the Motor City Casino on Monday, November 18. Buses leave the Romulus Senior Center at 9 a.m. The cost is $10 per person. The casino provides $20 in credit upon arrival. To sign up, call (734) 955-4120 or stop by the Senior Center during normal hours.

Lets Cruise
Cruises for Romulus seniors are planned for 2014. A trip to Alaska through Princess Cruises is scheduled for May 1424. A trip to Canada and New England through the Norwegian Cruise Line is set for Oct. 4-11. For more information, contact Rose Swidan at (734) 955-4120.

Medicare open enrollment


Senior Alliance counselors will answer Medicare questions from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, November 12, at the Romulus Senior Center. MMAP counselors will be available to enroll you in Part D or the Medicare Advantage Plan or apply for Medicare Savings and the Extra Help Program. Seniors must bring their Medicare card and a list of prescriptions.

Reminder: Daylight Savings Time ends on the first Sunday in November. Clocks fall back at 2 a.m. November 3.

Closed for the Day


The Romulus Senior Center will be closed on Monday, Nov. 11, for Veterans Day; Friday, Nov. 15, which is an unpaid city furlough day; Thursday, Nov. 28, Thanksgiving; and Friday, Nov. 29, the day after Thanksgiving.

Party Rooms for Rent


The Romulus Senior Center is a great place to celebrate birthdays, baby showers, family reunions and wedding receptions. The beautiful banquet halls and facilities at the Senior Center are available for rent at very affordable rates. There are rooms that can hold up to 120 people and they are available any day of the week. Bring your own caterer or make arrangements to use the Senior Center kitchen. Caregiver Support

Need Food?
Low-income residents are eligible for free commodities each month at the Senior Center. A variety of food is provided by The Emergency Food Assistance Program of Wayne County Senior Services. This months food distribution begins at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 21. Romulus Senior Director Rose Swidan encourages anyone in need of food any time to contact the center at (734) 955-4120.

Laura Rossow (above center), caregiver support coordinator with The Information Center, provides a caregiver support class at 10 a.m. the fourth Wednesday of the month, including November 27. Anyone interested may attend the sessions. There is no fee.

Election Day
The City of Romulus General Election is Tuesday, November 5. Voters will cast ballots for mayor, city clerk, city treasurer and seven members of City Council as well as three proposed charter amendments. Hours at the polls are 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. For more information about voting, call (734) 942-7540 or visit the City Clerks Office in the basement of City Hall, 11111 Wayne Road.
