Full outline of Programme Idea The subgenre for this soap opera is going to be melodrama because some parts will be over dramatic to make the show more appealing, as some issues that will be shown wont really relate or happen in day to day life. The soap will based on the lives of a group of police officers and their lives working at the station, investigating and stopping crime and also their private family lives. You will see the police officers handle gangs, thefts, drug deals, murder and blackmail which happen in their daily lives. The soap will be based around Manchester giving the soap its regional identity. It will be set in the similar places as most soaps: around a local area focusing on the same streets in each episode, the area will be Manchester, in the police officers homes and at the station, but we will mostly be filming in There will be six main characters including 5 police officers and one gang member who will be involved in most episodes. There will also be characters who will be featured often the DCIs wife and children, 5 other gang members and other police officers families. The soap will address issues that may occur in some towns and cities in the UK, it will relate to issues of crimes, drugs and alcohol abuse, this means that it wont be on day time TV and will have to restrict some viewers from watching.

Character names, profiles and relationships Detective Chief inspector: DCI David Hanks A man aged 35, he has worked in the police force for 12 years but has currently only became the Chief inspector. He is a very tall man, dark hair and very slim, he has been married for 6 years and his wife is currently pregnant with their third child. He has a young boy aged 5 called Timothy and a young girl aged 4 called Isabella. They live in a pleasant neighbourhood which rarely has trouble. DCI Hanks was born into a higher class family than the rest of the police force. He is an only child and both his mother and father have highly paid jobs. Senior investigating officer (SIO) (handles major investigations such as murders): SIO Marie Jackson Is in her early 40s, she has been married and is currently divorced. She has one child named Rebecca and is 15 years old, Rebecca is a rebellious child, who is caught smoking and drinking regularly, her mother fears that she will get involved within the wrong group of people which may lead her to do drugs and get in trouble with the police. She handles the major cases such as murders and kidnappings. She is average height, long brunette hair and looks younger than her age; she is highly involved within her job which allows her no time in her personal life. DI Natasha Brookes, she is in her mid-20s, she has long blonde hair and is quite short, because she is small most people dont take her seriously when she is out and working, this means the gangs dont see her as a threat. She is the newest member to the police force, she lives alone and is a very active girl she does a lot of activities to keep her healthy and motivated. DI Tom Harrod is 34 years old, tall with dark hair. He has been in the force for 12 years and did his training with DCI David Hanks; they have been friends since then and have been working together for the past year since DCI got promoted. He is also married to Amy who is a women in her late 20s they have one child aged 3 called Thomas. DI Tate Smith is the youngest in the force and is known as being a ladies man from the rest of the group. He is only 24 and has been working in the force for 3 years. He still lives with his parents and is known for wild partying and going to work hung-over, he is being watched carefully from the DCI and may lose his job because of the way he acts at work and in his personal life.

Gang member leader: Levi Crawford A 17 year old boy who lives in the rougher parts of Manchester, he lives with his Mum and 4 siblings. His mother is an alcoholic and Levi is forced to look after is siblings. He is the leader of a local gang, they are known for drugs, joy riding, theft and violence. Levi is constantly getting in trouble and is known very well by the police officers. When one member of his gang is arrested he blames DCI David Hanks and threatens his family.

Narrative ideas for first Episode Each narrative ideas link to eachother. Narrative idea 1: The first episode will show the police officers with their families starting off their normal day allowing the audience to relate to the characters, you will see them heading to work in the station, it will show 6 different shots, one of each police officer with their families at their homes allowing the audience to relate to them. The last shot will be of the leader of the local gang as he will have a recurring role throughout the soap, you will be able to see the comparison of the police officers home life to the gang members home life, this will show the audience why the gang member may act the way he does. The officers are given a tip that a major drug deal is going to happen and involves a local gang. When they go to arrest and search one of the gang members home they find a large amount of A class drugs but they can only arrest one member, whose home it is as they cannot link the other gang members to the drugs, this angers the gang and they decided to make the DCI pay for arresting their friend. Narrative idea 2: The other police officers investigate a missing girl who had been linked the local gang and had been missing for a few days, her mother and father had reported her missing and she has now been missing for 3 days, she has been spotted on cctv with the members of the gang, they believe that she is linked to the drugs and has been helping them to be smuggled into the country. They believe that she is in trouble and may be harmed if she isnt found. They interview the gang who deny they know the girl, but when a phone call reports domestic abuse they recover the girl, she is recovered doing drugs which cause her to be taken to the hospital where she tells the officers about being threatened to help with the drugs otherwise they would harm her. Narrative idea 3: The gang that had one of their members arrested decide to follow DCI home, they carefully watch his family life and decided to get pay back by following his wife out, while his wife who is heavily pregnant is out with her children they plan to mug and threaten her, telling her to tell the DCI to release the gang member otherwise they will return and harm both his wife and his children, The DCI is angry and turns up at the leaders home, where he then threatens him telling him next time he will kill him, the DCI leaves with the gang leader unconscious. The leader then blackmails the DCI telling him he wants money and his friend released and all charges dropped, the DCI struggles with this and decides to do what the gang say as he knows if he is reported he can lose his

family and be removed from the police force. Narrative idea 4: The police officers investigate a group of thefts which had been happening around the town centre, a young male has been described as being the thief and the officers have been trying to identify him, it turns out to be a young boy Michael aged 12, whose mother does drugs and is unfit to look after him, forcing the child to steal to buy food to feed himself and his younger sister Sasha aged 4 and help with his mothers addiction, they discover that the mum has been doing drugs heavily for the past two years since the boys father had left leaving the mother depressed, this meant that she couldnt cope with looking after her children. The young boy is taken into custody because of his aged he is released and social services take him and his sister away from his mother and into a home that can care for him and his sister allowing them to have a normal childhood. Narrative idea 5: A body of a young boy aged 17 is found in an abounded house where most teenage boys in that neighbour hang out. They believe that the boy died from a blow to the head but there was no object around that could have been used to kill him, the police believe that the young boy had been murdered. There was no mobile phone, money or any identification on the boy meaning the police cant contact his family. A big search is on to find the boys family and the murderer. The police decide to interview the teenage boys spotted near the time of the young boys death. They find that the boy was called Luke. His family hadnt noticed he was gone and believe he was dealing at the time of his death and may have been mugged taking his belongings and the drugs that were on him. They believe that the local gang are linked to the murder but there is no evidence to link the gang to the murder, meaning the case wont be closed.

Why the programme idea will work (target audience) I think the programme idea will work because there is a gap in the market for a police soap drama that is based more on the characters rather than the crime. There have been similar soaps that had been running for years such as the Bill which ran from 1984 until 2010.SO there is a gap for a new Police drama. Our target audience will be people in their late 20s and older, as the show will be more relate able to this audience.

Where/When will it be broadcast and why I think this show will be broadcasted after 9 because it will be featuring crimes, murders, drugs and alcohol abuse so it will have to be restricted from people under the age of 16 as it will be seen as being inappropriate for those viewers.
