U.S. Army Donates Quonset Building: Land must be found soon and purchased fcr the expansion of this work. We have been given an Army quonset building that was formerly used as a library, and will make a nice church building, with certain changes in structure. Pray we might secure this needed land. Some funds are in hand for this project now.

As opportunities present themselves, the Fleenors work in villages, as well as in Tokyo. Julius preaches in Japanese at least twice weekly, and Virginia teaches two classes, in Japanese. Much time has been spent in lan guage study, because they feel called to give their lives to the teaching of the lost in Japan. They are by love compelled to minister to thse people. This is Satan's territory. We are waging a spiritual warfare for men's souls. You must help us by your prayers. Jesus tells us in the parable of the Sower and the Seed, of "The Word that is sown; when they hear, Satan im mediately comes and takes away the word which is sown in them." Christ recognized the enemy of men's souls. In Ephesians 6 the Holy Spirif tells us to "take the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, with ALL PRAYER." We NEED YOUR prayers! The year 1959 marks 100 years of Protest ant missions in Japan. There are only 500,000

Christians of any kind in this land. Only onehalf of one percent even nam the Name of Jesus. Do you see our task? Do you see the
odds?

Unless the church in Japan is filled with the Holy Spirit, unless Satan is bound by our pray ers, we cannot move men and women for Christ. We see some fruits each year, but we are jeal
ous for our God, Millions here fall before idols.

All without Christ are deceived and lost for

SUMMER CAMP . . .
Last year we mentioned the need for more room for bigger camps. In July we secured a building from Army personnel for $250.00, had it torn down and brought to the Karuizawa Camp site. The total cost for the added build ing was $1,000,00. Miss Grace Farnham, with whom we have worked on many projects since coming to Japan, gave $500.00 from her mis sion funds, and we paid the same from ours. So we look forward to a bigger program for camp next year. This was mentioned last year as a need, and is a direct answer to prayer. This year seven high school boys made the good confession of their faith in Christ at camp. We are now praying their parents will allow them to be baptized this fall, as they all
come from non-Christian families. Two others

were given tracts and New Testaments, and were introduced to Jesus
Christ. It was their first contact with the Gos

pel, as there was no Christian witness in their villages away up in the mountains of northern Japan. During the summer of 1957 Miss Shimizu sent me a letter and asked to come to camp again, Once again she studied earnestly, but was troubled when taught that when she accepted Christ as Savior it meant she must give up all idol worship in the home. She continued read ing her Bible and decided she would accept Christ, but she felt too weak to stand the oppo sition of her family, all strong Buddhists, She decided to come to Tokyo and find a job, which she did in Demember 1957. She wanted to study more, but her job prevented her from coming to services as she had only one or two days off a month. We found her a job with missionaries, and she studied her Bible faithfully. I invited her fo come to live in our home as a helper, on May 2, and on May 22 she accepted Christ as

Pray that these will all go ahead in com plete surrender to Christ, and be baptized soon. The Fleenors

In July and August she helped cook in the summer camp. She spent much time in prayer and Bible study, and went to every Bible class
available. The final result is that she has dedi

cated her life to winning souls for Christ. She is attending Child Evangelism School in Tokyo one night a week. We also give her time for Bible study each day in the home. She is serving as a Sunday school teacher here at Shimoochiai, as well as teaching her weekly Satur day class in her brother's home. Her desire is to be grounded in Christ, and ^o study His Word so that she can return to her village of 4,000 with the Gospel. She plans to make a two week trip back at New Year's, in order to witness to her own family. Pray for her. She says about one-half of the people in her village are Communists, the others Buddhists
or atheists.

SHIMOOCHIAI CHURCH ...

The Shimoochiai Church pastor, Paul Yamada,

resigned in July of this year, with plans for further study. Julius is pastoring the church temporarily, together with the one Japanese
elder of the church.

Knightstown Christian Church, Indiana, has supported Stephen ever since we came to Japan, and have paid his tuition. Julia is sponsored by the Hannegan (Indiana) Christian Church and two individuals. Miss Alice Kempf and Mrs. Maxine Seyb. Dana Lee, aged four, is sponsored by the Vaughn (Oregon) Church of Christ and her grandmother, Mrs. Nadine Fleenor. We are grateful for the very personal interest these

Pastors are few in Japan. Our hope is that God will call out men from this congregation and the Bible school as future

Many of our contacts are with people suffering from tuberculosis, and this year there have been more deaths from sleeping sickness in Tokyo than ever before. So we thank God each day for good health. Outside of intestinal para sites, which we constantly fight against, the children have had good health this year. Our hope and desire is that they might glorify Christ by their lives. TOKYO, Japan, January 3, 1958 Julius Fleenor sends word from Tokyo
that the new church they began in the Nishi ArAi section of Tokyo in

1957 has a chance to get an army surplus pre-fab building in the

spring. With the United States Army leaving Japan, many such buildings are available and being given to missions for only the cost of moving.

Brother Fleenor suggests that #2,000 will be needed for the land on
which to put a building, and says that they have half of that on hand. Funds to help may be sent to Mrs. M. V. Fleenor, Box 1040, Yakima,

BRIEF HISTORY . . .
Julius and Virginia Fleenor were reared in
Christian homes and attended church from

childhood. Both at an early age committed their lives to preaching the gospel in Japan. The Fleenors were married while attending Northwest Christian College, Eugene, Oregon in 1946. After completing his work at Northwest Chris tian College, Julius secured his graduate degree

schools. Five months after arriving in Japan, Julius began teaching full time in the Tokyo Bible College using an interpreter. Besides train ing preachers, Julius established a church in May of 1952, in the Shimoochiai area of Tokyo.
The nucleus of this church was converts from

English Bible classes. In 1952 land was given

to the Fleenors to be used for a mission house

from Butler University iri 1949, The Michigan

City, Indiana, First Christian Church took the responsibility of supporting Julius as their min ister to Japan at $100.00 a month in 1950. At the same time Virginia's home church, Crenshaw Christian Church, Los Angeles, commis sioned her as their representative to Japan to preach the gospel, giving her full living link support in the same amount. The Fleenors arrived in Japan in October 1950, and by the kind help of Miss Grace Farnham, who has worked for over thirty years in Japan, were provided housing in the two side rooms of the Mabashi Church in Tokyo. The Fleenors lived there eighteen months studying language and teaching English Bible in various

Until furlough in July, 1955, the work consisted of establishing the church at Shimoochiai, training native leaders and pastors and teaching English Bible in private school and the home. Each summer they conducted sum mer camps. These various methods of sowing

first five years.

The Fleenors returned to Japan from fur lough in October of 1956, and since that time have had the joy of establishing one more church in the Nishi Arai section of Tokyo and have been doing home evangelism in Tokyo and the village areas nearby.

Stephen was three and one-half when he ar rived in Japan. Now as a healthy ten year old, he speaks fluently in both Japanese and Eng lish. He has often been a great help in winning his pals and also adults to Christ. The Japanese love children and often they open dcors for us. One young playmate of Stephen's is now an eighth grader and has committed his life to preaching the gospel. This boy already helps to teach pre-school children in our new work at Nishi Arai. Stephen first invited Saburo to Sun day School and introduced us to his mother, This young boy's mother and young brother are now also Christians. He prays earnestly for the
conversion of his father.

She replied, "Stephen said I don't lock like a Japanese," We can readily understand what Jesus meant when He said "Unless you turn and become as a little child, you cannot enter the Kingdom of Heaven." Often God teaches us through our children. Often we long to be more closely identified with these people to whom we preach. We are Americans with fair skin and blue eyes, but when God works the miracle of His love in our hearts, we feel a great oneness with our Japanese brethren.

Please pray for Stephen that he might be used of God all the days of his life. We have only one ambition for him. That is, that God should be able to use our son in whatever way that will give the most glory to our Heavenly
Father.

OUR PURPOSE . . .
Our first purpose in Japan is to live Christ before these people each day. In living Christ we feel that making intercessory prayer for those who are lost is perhaps our first and most important task. Jesus said "You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you, that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide; so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give it to you." Our purpose is to use every method we can to sow the seed of the Word of God, make the gospel clear and simple, and to pray for those who hear the gospel. Our job is to strengthen and feed the babes in Christ, and to help them in turn become soul winners among their own people.

Our hope is to open up new areas and train Japanese to go ahead and minister the gospel to their own people. We financially help a church until it can become self supporting. We encourage lay leadership in the churches. Sup port of Japanese preachers and teachers with

American funds is always done as a temporary

measure until a congregation can be built up to take on this responsibility themselves. Mission funds are used to buy tracts, Bibles, religious films, purchase land in new areas, con struct simple buildings, children's work, con
gregations, camp work, and some benevolent
work to those in dire circumstances.

Our thought always is to build upon Christ and His Word, so that if we had to leave Japan at any time, the work would continue.

The above picture shows a portion of the group of the fifty-one members of the Shimccchiai Church which is located on the front of

the property where the Fleenor mission house is built. They now have their own building, their own church officers, and a Japanese pas tor, They are completely self-supporting. The church building was built from gifts from Amer ican churches and the pastor was at first sup ported by the Central Christian Church in Port land, Oregon. The church now pays his salary

of missionary help. We are ready to give spirit ual help and continue to pray for the Christians and fellowship with them.

ministry. Some people ask if forwarding agents of direct support missionary get salaries. The answer is "No." Most of them spend much of their own money for postage and extras. To be a forwarding agent is a tiring job that requires much bookkeeping, letterwriting, and patience. We are proud of our forwarding agent and

years old. Many members have moved away or attend other places. The church is not growing as rapidly as in its early begining, but we are encouraging the pastor and church to reach out more and to be more evangelistic.

Nishi Arai Church

In January we began using a public conduct children's meetings in one poorest sections of Tokyo. After two we were no longer allowed to use the the owner said the children often stole hail to of the months hall as things.

preaches Sunday evenings and teaches on the Old Testament each Tuesday night. Mrs. Aono holds three children's meetings a week in their home and Julius teaches one young people's class. We show religious films in the yard to crowds over one hundred in good weather, cn Sunday evenings also.

18 BAPTIZED INTO CHRIST AT SUMMER CAMP

Eighteen junior high and sixth grade children were baptized into Christ during the Nishi Arai week of Summer Camp. These children all come from very poor homes and each had memorized fifteen passages of scriptures in order to attend. They had at tended every Sunday and Wednesday for three months faithfully and were given free tuition to come to camp. Christians in America gave $5.00 per child for food and transportation.
These children come from homes that are

SUMMER CAMP WORK OPPORTUNITY UNLIMITED

Besides the Nishi Aral Camp, we had a high school boys' camp and University age week-end camp, From the above pictured group, three made definite decisions to accept Christ as their Saviour, and be baptized. All made some decision to read their Bibles and pray. Some who had no Bibles bought them and have been

continuing faithfully in attending the Saturday afternoon English Bible class held in the mission
home.

$1,000.00 we could build a dormitory to sleep twenty to thirty more and make room for sep arate classes and reach more with the gospel during the summer. Will you pray that we might know the Lord's will regarding this work. If the Lord provides this by April, we could have it ready for a larger program next summer. Pray with us that we might know whether we should expand our camp program.

Since the Japanese vacation time is only dur ing August, we have a problem of having only about three weeks available for those attending school as they need a week for preparation before starting back to school. It is our hope to enlarge our camp facilities so we can have thirty to forty young people each week. Now we have only a four bedroom camp house. We sleep twenty-four to thirty-five each week, counting our family, cooks, teachers, etc. For

one week-end for a family camp. It is our hope to have twice the number of young people
from Nishi Arai area next year and to have the English Bible camp to reach non-Christians
and introduce them to the Bible and Jesus Christ through the camp. One young girl came to the University camp

The Shimoochiai Church is temporarily without a pastor, but the faith
